17 Word wakker, word wakker, Jeruzalem! U hebt genoeg gedronken uit de beker van Gods toorn. U hebt hem tot de laatste druppel leeggedronken en raakte geheel bedwelmd. 18 Geen van haar zonen heeft het overleefd om haar te helpen of te vertellen wat zij moet doen. 19 Deze twee dingen troffen u: vertwijfeling en verwoesting. Ja, honger en het zwaard. Wie van uw vrienden is overgebleven? Wie zal u nu nog troosten?

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath
17 Awake, awake!(A)
Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
the cup(B) of his wrath,(C)
you who have drained to its dregs(D)
the goblet that makes people stagger.(E)
18 Among all the children(F) she bore
there was none to guide her;(G)
among all the children she reared
there was none to take her by the hand.(H)
19 These double calamities(I) have come upon you—
who can comfort you?(J)—
ruin and destruction,(K) famine(L) and sword(M)—
who can[a] console you?

17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
19 These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
