Jeremiah speaks in the Temple
7 The Lord gave this message to Jeremiah: 2 ‘Stand at the gate of the Lord's temple and speak this message. Say, “Listen to the Lord's message, all you people of Judah. You come through this gate to worship the Lord. 3 This is what the Lord Almighty, Israel's God, says: Change the way that you live. Do things that are right. If you change, I will let you continue to live here. 4 People may say, ‘We are safe here! This is the temple of the Lord. It is the temple of the Lord!’ But the people who say that are deceiving you. Do not trust them. 5 You must change the way that you have been living. You must do what is right. Be fair to each other. 6 Do not be cruel to foreigners who are living among you. Do not be cruel to widows, or to children who have no family. You must stop murdering people. You must stop worshipping other gods. If you live like that, it will destroy you. 7 If you change how you live, I will let you live in this place. It is the land that I gave to your ancestors, to be their home for ever.
8 But look at how you live now! You believe in lies that cannot save you. 9 You rob people. You murder people. You have sex with someone else's wife or husband. You tell lies in court when you have promised to tell the truth. You offer sacrifices to the false god, Baal. You serve other gods that you never knew before. 10 You do that and then you come to meet me here, in my own house! You say, ‘We are safe!’ 11 This is my temple! It is not a place where robbers can hide and be safe. Listen to me! I have seen the things that you have done.” That is what the Lord says.
12 “Go to Shiloh, and see what I did there. It was the first place that I chose where people would worship me. But I destroyed it because of the wicked things that my people, the Israelites, did. 13 You have done the same wicked things. I have warned you many times, but you have not listened to me. I called out to you, but you refused to answer.” That is what the Lord says.
14 “So now I will destroy this temple that I chose to be my home. I gave this temple to you and to your ancestors. You think that it will keep you safe. But I will destroy it, as I destroyed Shiloh. 15 I will send you far away from me. I already did that to the other Israelites, the people of Ephraim's tribe.” [a]
16 Jeremiah, you must not pray for this people. Do not ask me to help them. If you ask me to save them, I will not listen to you. 17 You can see what they are doing in Jerusalem and in all the towns of Judah. 18 The children fetch wood and their fathers use it to light a fire. The women prepare flour to cook cakes. Then they offer them to the “Queen of Heaven”. And they offer gifts of drink to other false gods. They do that to make me angry. 19 But they are not hurting me. They are hurting themselves, and they will be ashamed.’ That is what the Lord says.
20 The Lord God says, ‘Because I am so angry, I will punish this land very much. It will be like a fire that nobody can stop. My punishment will destroy people, animals, trees and crops.’
21 The Lord Almighty, Israel's God, says this to Judah's people: ‘You should eat the meat from your burnt offerings, as well as your other sacrifices. You are not offering them to me![b] 22 Remember this: I brought your ancestors safely out of Egypt. Then I gave them my commands. Those commands were not only about burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 I also told them, “Obey me. Then I will be your God, and you will be my people. You must live in the way that I have commanded you. If you do that, you will enjoy your lives.” 24 But your ancestors refused to obey me. They did anything that their wicked thoughts made them want to do. They refused to return to me. Instead, they went further away. 25 Since the time that your ancestors left Egypt, I have sent my servants, the prophets to speak to you. I have continued to do that many times, even until now. 26 But my people did not listen to me. They have refused to obey me. They have continued to do evil things, even worse than their ancestors did.’
27 The Lord said to me, ‘Jeremiah, you must speak my message to them. But they will not listen to you. When you call out to them, they will not answer. 28 So you must tell them, “The people of this nation have not obeyed the Lord their God. When I warned them, they have not agreed to change. Nobody does what is right. Nobody even speaks about what is true. 29 Now show that you are upset. Cut off your hair and throw it away. Go to the tops of the hills and sing sad songs about death. Realize that today's people have made the Lord very angry. So he has decided to turn away from them and leave them.” ’
The valley of death
30 The Lord says, ‘The people of Judah have done things that I see are evil. They have put their disgusting idols in my temple. That is the place that I chose to be my special home, and they have made it unclean. 31 They have built altars in Topheth, in Ben-Hinnom Valley. On those altars, they light fires to burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices. I never commanded them to do that. I never even thought about it. 32 So listen to me! The time will soon come when people no longer call those places Topheth or Ben-Hinnom Valley. Instead, they will call it Death Valley. They will bury lots of dead people there. There will be no space left to bury any more people! 33 Then the bodies of dead people will lie on the ground. Birds and animals will come and eat them. There will be nobody to chase them away. 34 Jerusalem and all of Judah will become like a desert where nobody lives. There will be no noise of happy people. There will be no happy songs or marriage parties. The whole land will be quiet.’
Footnotes
- 7:15 Ephraim was a name for the kingdom of Israel in the north. God had already sent them into exile, far away.
- 7:21 The people should not eat meat from burnt offerings. See Leviticus 1:6-9. God is telling them that they are not obeying his laws at all. So their sacrifices were not important to him any more. The rules about sacrifices were no longer important.

Trusting in Lying Words(A)
7 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 (B)“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord!’ ” 3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (C)“Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. 4 (D)Do not trust in these lying words, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these.’
5 “For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly (E)execute [a]judgment between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, (F)or walk after other gods to your hurt, 7 (G)then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in (H)the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.
8 “Behold, you trust in (I)lying words that cannot profit. 9 (J)Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and (K)walk after other gods whom you do not know, 10 (L)and then come and stand before Me in this house (M)which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’? 11 Has (N)this house, which is called by My name, become a (O)den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says the Lord.
12 “But go now to (P)My place which was in Shiloh, (Q)where I set My name at the first, and see (R)what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these works,” says the Lord, “and I spoke to you, (S)rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I (T)called you, but you did not answer, 14 therefore I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to this place which I gave to you and your fathers, as I have done to (U)Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you out of My sight, (V)as I have cast out all your brethren—(W)the whole posterity of Ephraim.
16 “Therefore (X)do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me; (Y)for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 (Z)The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they (AA)pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger. 19 (AB)Do they provoke Me to anger?” says the Lord. “Do they not provoke themselves, to the shame of their own faces?”
20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Behold, My anger and My fury will be poured out on this place—on man and on beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. And it will burn and not be quenched.”
21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AC)“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat meat. 22 (AD)For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. 23 But this is what I commanded them, saying, (AE)‘Obey My voice, and (AF)I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 (AG)Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but (AH)followed[b] the counsels and the [c]dictates of their evil hearts, and (AI)went[d] backward and not forward. 25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have even (AJ)sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26 (AK)Yet they did not obey Me or incline their ear, but (AL)stiffened their neck. (AM)They did worse than their fathers.
27 “Therefore (AN)you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not obey you. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.
Judgment on Obscene Religion
28 “So you shall say to them, ‘This is a nation that does not obey the voice of the Lord their God (AO)nor receive correction. (AP)Truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth. 29 (AQ)Cut off your hair and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on the desolate heights; for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.’ 30 For the children of Judah have done evil in My sight,” says the Lord. (AR)“They have set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to [e]pollute it. 31 And they have built the (AS)high places of Tophet, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to (AT)burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, (AU)which I did not command, nor did it come into My heart.
32 “Therefore behold, (AV)the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when it will no more be called Tophet, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; (AW)for they will bury in Tophet until there is no room. 33 The (AX)corpses of this people will be food for the birds of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth. And no one will frighten them away. 34 Then I will cause to (AY)cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. For (AZ)the land shall be desolate.

Evil in the Land
7 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 (A)“Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. 3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (B)Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4 (C)Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’
5 “For if you truly (D)amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly (E)execute justice one with another, 6 if you (F)do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, (G)or shed innocent blood in this place, (H)and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7 (I)then I will let you dwell in this place, (J)in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.
8 “Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9 (K)Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, (L)swear falsely, (M)make offerings to Baal, (N)and go after other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before me in this house, (O)which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11 (P)Has this house, (Q)which is called by my name, (R)become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord. 12 Go now to (S)my place that was in Shiloh, (T)where I made my name dwell at first, and (U)see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and (V)when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and (W)when I called you, you did not answer, 14 therefore I will do to (X)the house (Y)that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, (Z)as I did to Shiloh. 15 (AA)And I will cast you out of my sight, (AB)as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of (AC)Ephraim.
16 “As for you, (AD)do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, (AE)and the women knead dough, to (AF)make cakes for (AG)the queen of heaven. And (AH)they pour out drink offerings to other gods, (AI)to provoke me to anger. 19 (AJ)Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, (AK)to their own shame? 20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, (AL)my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; (AM)it will burn and not be quenched.”
21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AN)“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them (AO)concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them: (AP)‘Obey my voice, and (AQ)I will be your God, and you shall be my people. (AR)And walk in all the way that I command you, (AS)that it may be well with you.’ 24 (AT)But they did not obey or incline their ear, (AU)but walked in their own counsels and (AV)the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and (AW)went backward and not forward. 25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, (AX)I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. 26 (AY)Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, (AZ)but stiffened their neck. (BA)They did worse than their fathers.
27 (BB)“So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. (BC)You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28 And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; (BD)truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.
29 (BE)“‘Cut off your hair and cast it away;
raise a lamentation on (BF)the bare heights,
for the Lord has rejected and forsaken
the generation of his wrath.’
The Valley of Slaughter
30 “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set (BG)their detestable things in the house (BH)that is called by my name, to (BI)defile it. 31 And they have built the high places of (BJ)Topheth, which is in (BK)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, (BL)to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, (BM)which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. 32 (BN)Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called (BO)Topheth, or (BP)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; (BQ)for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. 33 (BR)And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth, (BS)and none will frighten them away. 34 (BT)And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (BU)for the land shall become a waste.
