The Word of God to Pashhur
20 Now (A)Pashhur the son of (B)Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. 2 Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high (C)gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.
3 And it happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord has not called your name Pashhur, but [a]Magor-Missabib. 4 For thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it. I will (D)give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword. 5 Moreover I (E)will deliver all the wealth of this city, all its produce, and all its precious things; all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, who will plunder them, seize them, and (F)carry them to Babylon. 6 And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. You shall go to Babylon, and there you shall die, and be buried there, you and all your friends, to whom you have (G)prophesied lies.’ ”
Jeremiah’s Unpopular Ministry
7 O Lord, You [b]induced me, and I was persuaded;
(H)You are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
(I)I am [c]in derision daily;
Everyone mocks me.
8 For when I spoke, I cried out;
(J)I shouted, “Violence and plunder!”
Because the word of the Lord was made to me
A reproach and a derision daily.
9 Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,
Nor speak anymore in His name.”
But His word was in my heart like a (K)burning fire
Shut up in my bones;
I was weary of holding it back,
And (L)I could not.
10 (M)For I heard many [d]mocking:
“Fear on every side!”
“Report,” they say, “and we will report it!”
(N)All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,
“Perhaps he can be induced;
Then we will prevail against him,
And we will take our revenge on him.”
11 But the Lord is (O)with me as a mighty, awesome One.
Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not (P)prevail.
They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper.
Their (Q)everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.
12 But, O Lord of hosts,
You who (R)test the righteous,
And see the [e]mind and heart,
(S)Let me see Your vengeance on them;
For I have pleaded my cause before You.
13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord!
For (T)He has delivered the life of the poor
From the hand of evildoers.
14 (U)Cursed be the day in which I was born!
Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!
15 Let the man be cursed
Who brought news to my father, saying,
“A male child has been born to you!”
Making him very glad.
16 And let that man be like the cities
Which the Lord (V)overthrew, and did not relent;
Let him (W)hear the cry in the morning
And the shouting at noon,
17 (X)Because he did not kill me from the womb,
That my mother might have been my grave,
And her womb always enlarged with me.
18 (Y)Why did I come forth from the womb to (Z)see [f]labor and sorrow,
That my days should be consumed with shame?

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur
20 Now (A)Pashhur the priest, the son of (B)Immer, who was (C)chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then (D)Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him (E)in the stocks that were in the upper (F)Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3 The next day, when (G)Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call your name (H)Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4 For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you (I)a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5 Moreover, (J)I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its (K)prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6 And you, (L)Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, (M)to whom you have prophesied falsely.”
7 O Lord, (N)you have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
(O)you are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
(P)I have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8 For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, (Q)“Violence and destruction!”
For (R)the word of the Lord has become for me
(S)a reproach and (T)derision all day long.
9 If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
(U)there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and (V)I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 (W)For I hear many whispering.
(X)Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him! (Y)Let us denounce him!”
say all my (Z)close friends,
(AA)watching for (AB)my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then (AC)we can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11 But (AD)the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
(AE)they will not overcome me.
(AF)They will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their (AG)eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12 O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
(AH)who sees the heart and the mind,[a]
let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 (AI)Sing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.
14 (AJ)Cursed be the day
on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
let it not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
(AK)making him very glad.
16 Let that man be like (AL)the cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
(AM)let him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 (AN)because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 (AO)Why did I come out from the womb
(AP)to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?

Pashhur Persecutes Jeremiah
20 When Pashhur the priest, the son of (A)Immer, who was (B)chief overseer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, 2 Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet (C)beaten and put him in the (D)stocks that were at the upper (E)Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the Lord. 3 Then on the next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “Pashhur is not the name the Lord has (F)called you, but rather [a](G)Magor-missabib. 4 For this is what the Lord says: ‘Behold, I am going to make you a (H)horror to yourself and to all your friends; and while (I)your eyes look on, they will fall by the sword of their enemies. So I will (J)hand all Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he will take them away as (K)exiles to Babylon and will kill them with the sword. 5 I will also give all the (L)wealth of this city, all its produce and all its valuable things—even all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will (M)hand over to their enemies, and they will plunder them, take them away, and bring them to Babylon. 6 And you, (N)Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity; and you will enter Babylon, and there you will die and there you will be buried, you and all your (O)friends to whom you have (P)falsely prophesied.’”
Jeremiah’s Complaint
7 Lord, You persuaded me and I let myself be persuaded;
You have (Q)overcome me and prevailed.
I have become a (R)laughingstock all day long;
Everyone (S)mocks me.
8 For each time I speak, I cry aloud;
I (T)proclaim violence and destruction,
Because for me the (U)word of the Lord has [b]resulted
In taunting and derision all day long.
9 But if I say, “I will not (V)remember Him
Nor speak anymore in His name,”
Then in (W)my heart it becomes like a burning fire
Shut up in my bones;
And I am tired of holding it in,
And (X)I cannot endure it.
10 For (Y)I have heard the whispering of many,
“(Z)Terror on every side!
(AA)Denounce him; let’s denounce him!”
[c]All my (AB)trusted friends,
Watching for my fall, say:
“Perhaps he will be persuaded, so that we may (AC)prevail against him
And take our revenge on him.”
11 But the (AD)Lord is with me like a powerful champion;
Therefore my (AE)persecutors will stumble and not prevail.
They will be put to great shame because they have [d]failed,
An (AF)everlasting disgrace that will not be forgotten.
12 Yet, Lord of armies, who (AG)tests the righteous,
Who sees the [e]mind and the heart;
Let me (AH)see Your vengeance on them,
For (AI)to You I have disclosed my cause.
13 (AJ)Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord!
For He has (AK)saved the soul of the needy one
From the hand of evildoers.
14 Cursed be the (AL)day when I was born;
May the day when my mother gave birth to me not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news
To my father, saying,
“A [f](AM)boy has been born to you!”
And made him very happy.
16 But may that man be like the cities
Which the Lord (AN)overthrew without [g]relenting,
And may he hear an (AO)outcry in the morning
And [h]an alarm for war at noon;
17 Because he did not (AP)kill me [i]before birth,
So that my mother would have been my grave,
And her womb forever pregnant.
18 Why did I ever come out of the womb
To (AQ)look at trouble and sorrow,
So that my (AR)days have been spent in (AS)shame?

Jeremiah and Pashhur
20 When the priest Pashhur son of Immer,(A) the official(B) in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, 2 he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten(C) and put in the stocks(D) at the Upper Gate of Benjamin(E) at the Lord’s temple. 3 The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord’s name(F) for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side.(G) 4 For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; with your own eyes(H) you will see them fall by the sword of their enemies. I will give(I) all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry(J) them away to Babylon or put them to the sword. 5 I will deliver all the wealth(K) of this city into the hands of their enemies—all its products, all its valuables and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away(L) as plunder and carry it off to Babylon. 6 And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into exile to Babylon. Jeremiah’s Complaint
7 You deceived[a](N) me, Lord, and I was deceived[b];
you overpowered(O) me and prevailed.
I am ridiculed(P) all day long;
everyone mocks(Q) me.
8 Whenever I speak, I cry out
proclaiming violence and destruction.(R)
So the word of the Lord has brought me
insult and reproach(S) all day long.
9 But if I say, “I will not mention his word
or speak anymore in his name,”(T)
his word is in my heart like a fire,(U)
a fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary of holding it in;(V)
indeed, I cannot.
10 I hear many whispering,
“Terror(W) on every side!
Denounce(X) him! Let’s denounce him!”
All my friends(Y)
are waiting for me to slip,(Z) saying,
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then we will prevail(AA) over him
and take our revenge(AB) on him.”
11 But the Lord(AC) is with me like a mighty warrior;
so my persecutors(AD) will stumble and not prevail.(AE)
They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced;(AF)
their dishonor will never be forgotten.
12 Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous
and probe the heart and mind,(AG)
let me see your vengeance(AH) on them,
for to you I have committed(AI) my cause.
13 Sing(AJ) to the Lord!
Give praise to the Lord!
He rescues(AK) the life of the needy
from the hands of the wicked.(AL)
14 Cursed be the day I was born!(AM)
May the day my mother bore me not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news,
who made him very glad, saying,
“A child is born to you—a son!”
16 May that man be like the towns(AN)
the Lord overthrew without pity.
May he hear wailing(AO) in the morning,
a battle cry at noon.
17 For he did not kill me in the womb,(AP)
with my mother as my grave,
her womb enlarged forever.
18 Why did I ever come out of the womb(AQ)
to see trouble(AR) and sorrow
and to end my days in shame?(AS)

20 Thầy tế lễ Phát-hua, con trai Y-mê, đang giữ chức quản đốc đền thờ CHÚA, nghe Giê-rê-mi rao truyền những lời ấy. 2 Phát-hua liền đánh tiên tri Giê-rê-mi và cùm chân ông tại cổng thượng Bên-gia-min, trong đền thờ CHÚA. 3 Ngày hôm sau, khi Phát-hua tháo cùm cho Giê-rê-mi, Giê-rê-mi nói với ông: “CHÚA không gọi ông là Phát-hua nữa, nhưng gọi là Ma-go Mít-sa-bíp.”[a]
4 Vì CHÚA phán như vầy: “Này, Ta sẽ khiến ngươi trở thành nỗi kinh hoàng cho chính mình và hết thảy bạn hữu ngươi. Chúng sẽ ngã dưới gươm quân thù trước mắt ngươi. Ta sẽ phó toàn dân Giu-đa vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn, vua sẽ đày chúng về Ba-by-lôn, và dùng gươm giết chúng. 5 Và Ta sẽ phó mọi của cải thành này, mọi thu nhập, mọi bảo vật, cùng mọi kho báu các vua Giu-đa vào tay quân thù chúng. 7 Lạy CHÚA, Ngài đã dụ dỗ con, và con đã để cho mình bị dụ,
Ngài đã uy hiếp con, và đã thắng!
Con trở thành trò cười suốt ngày,
Mọi người chế nhạo con.
8 Mỗi khi con rao truyền, con phải kêu lên,
Con phải gào lên: “Bạo ngược và tàn phá!”
Thật lời CHÚA đã khiến cho con
Bị sỉ nhục và nhạo cười suốt ngày!
9 Mỗi khi con tự nhủ: “Tôi sẽ không nhắc đến lời Ngài,
Hoặc nhân danh Ngài rao truyền nữa,”
Thì lời Ngài dồn nén trong xương cốt con,
Như lửa cháy trong lòng con.
Con không thể dằn lòng được nữa,
Con không thể thắng được!
10 Con nghe lắm người thì thầm
“Kinh hoàng tứ phía!
Hãy loan tin ra, phải, chúng ta hãy loan tin ra!”
Hết thảy bạn bè con
Mong chờ con vấp ngã:
“Biết đâu nó sẽ bị dụ,
Chúng ta sẽ thắng nó,
Và trả thù nó.”
11 Nhưng CHÚA, Ngài ở với con như một chiến sĩ mạnh bạo,
Vì thế, những kẻ bắt bớ con sẽ vấp ngã, không thắng được,
Chúng sẽ xấu hổ vô cùng, vì sẽ không thành công,
Nhục nhã đời đời, không sao quên được.
12 Lạy CHÚA Vạn Quân, Ngài là Đấng dò xét người công chính,
Đấng nhìn thấu lòng dạ và ý tưởng,
Xin cho con thấy Ngài báo thù họ,
Vì con đã giao phó việc con cho Ngài.
13 Hãy hát mừng CHÚA!
Hãy tôn vinh CHÚA!
Vì Ngài giải cứu người khốn cùng
Khỏi tay kẻ làm ác.
