^18 (A)The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they ^(B)pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger.

¹³ And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled ^(A)like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose ^(B)roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and ^(C)poured out drink offerings to other gods.” ’ ”

¹⁷ But we will certainly do ^(A)whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the ^(B)queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of ^[a]food, were well-off, and saw no trouble. ¹⁸ But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”

¹⁹ The women also said, ^(C)“And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her, to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands’ permission?”

²² Or do we ^(A)provoke the Lord to jealousy? ^(B)Are we stronger than He?

⁹ but you have done more evil than all who were before you, ^(A)for you have gone and made for yourself other gods and molded images to provoke Me to anger, and ^(B)have cast Me behind your back—

²⁹ And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and ^(A)set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses ^(B)on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger;

⁷ Yet you have not listened to Me,” says the Lord, “that you might ^(A)provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.

¹⁷ “For the Lord of hosts, ^(A)who planted you, has pronounced doom against you for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke Me to anger in offering incense to Baal.”

^2 (A)“Inasmuch as I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, and ^(B)you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and have made My people Israel sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins,
