    the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the midst of Sihon;^(A)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
    the skulls^(B) of the noisy boasters.

¹⁷ “I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near.^(A)
A star will come out of Jacob;^(B)
    a scepter will rise out of Israel.^(C)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,^(D)
    the skulls^[a](E) of^[b] all the people of Sheth.^[c]

²⁸ “Fire went out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the city of Sihon.^(A)
It consumed^(B) Ar^(C) of Moab,
    the citizens of Arnon’s heights.^(D)

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes’^[a]?^(A)

⁴ From Judah will come the cornerstone,^(A)
    from him the tent peg,^(B)
from him the battle bow,^(C)
    from him every ruler.

² I will send fire on Moab
    that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.^[a](A)
Moab will go down in great tumult
    amid war cries^(B) and the blast of the trumpet.^(C)
