Warning of Jerusalem’s Fall

22 This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the house of the king of Judah and there speak this word, ²and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, who ^(A)sits on David’s throne, you and your servants and your people who enter these gates. ³This is what the Lord says: “^(B)Do justice and righteousness, and save one who has been robbed from the power of his ^(C)oppressor. And ^(D)do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not ^(E)shed innocent blood in this place. ⁴For if you will indeed perform this ^[a]instruction, then ^(F)kings will enter the gates of this house, sitting ^[b]in David’s place on his throne, riding in chariots and on horses, the king himself, his servants, and his people. ⁵^(G)But if you will not obey these words, I ^(H)swear by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that this house will become a place of ruins.”’” ⁶For this is what the Lord says concerning the house of the king of Judah:

“You are like ^(I)Gilead to Me,
Like the summit of Lebanon;
Yet most assuredly I will make you a ^(J)wilderness,
Cities that are not inhabited.
⁷For I will set apart ^(K)destroyers against you,
Each with his weapons;
And they will ^(L)cut down your choicest cedars
And ^(M)throw them on the fire.

⁸“Many nations will pass by this city; and they will ^(N)say to one another, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this great city?’ ⁹Then they will ^[c]answer, ‘Because they ^(O)abandoned the covenant of the Lord their God and bowed down to other gods and served them.’”

¹⁰^(P)Do not weep for the dead or mourn for him,
But weep deeply for the one who goes away;
For ^(Q)he will never return
Or see his native land.

¹¹For this is what the Lord says regarding ^[d]^(R)Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who became king in the place of his father Josiah, who went out from this place: “He will never return there; ¹²but in the place where they took him into exile, there he will ^(S)die and he will not see this land again.

¹³“Woe to him who builds his house ^(T)without righteousness,
And his upstairs rooms without justice,
Who uses his neighbor’s services without pay
And ^(U)does not give him his wages,
¹⁴Who says, ‘I will ^(V)build myself a large house
With spacious upstairs rooms,
And cut out its windows,
^[e]Paneling it with ^(W)cedar and painting it ^[f]bright red.’
¹⁵Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar?
Did your father not eat and drink
And ^(X)do justice and righteousness?
Then it was ^(Y)well for him.
¹⁶He pled the cause of the ^(Z)afflicted and the poor,
Then it was well.
^(AA)Is that not what it means to know Me?”
Declares the Lord.
¹⁷“But your eyes and your heart
Are intent only upon your own ^(AB)dishonest gain,
And on ^(AC)shedding innocent blood,
And on practicing oppression and extortion.”

¹⁸Therefore this is what the Lord says regarding ^(AD)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

“They will not ^(AE)mourn for him:
‘^(AF)Oh, my brother!’ or, ‘Oh, sister!’
They will not mourn for him:
‘Oh, for the master!’ or, ‘Oh, for his splendor!’
¹⁹He will be ^(AG)buried with a donkey’s burial,
Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
²⁰Go up to Lebanon and cry out,
And raise your voice in Bashan;
Cry out also from ^(AH)Abarim,
For all your ^(AI)lovers have been crushed.
²¹I spoke to you in your prosperity;
But ^(AJ)you said, ‘I will not listen!’
^(AK)This has been your way ^(AL)from your youth,
That you have not obeyed My voice.
²²The wind will sweep away all your ^(AM)shepherds,
And your ^(AN)lovers will go into captivity;
Then you will certainly be ^(AO)ashamed and humiliated
Because of all your wickedness.
²³You who live in Lebanon,
Nested in the cedars,
How you will groan when sharp pains come on you,
^(AP)Pain like a woman in childbirth!

²⁴“As I live,” declares the Lord, “even if ^[g]^(AQ)Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a ^(AR)signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull ^[h]you ^[i]off; ²⁵and I will ^(AS)hand you over to those who are seeking your life, yes, to those of whom you are frightened, that is, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Chaldeans. ²⁶I will ^(AT)hurl you and your ^(AU)mother who gave birth to you into another country where you were not born, and there you will die. ²⁷But as for the land to which they long to return, they will not return to it.

²⁸Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered jar?
Or is he an ^(AV)undesirable vessel?
Why have he and his descendants been ^(AW)hurled out
And cast into a ^(AX)land that they had not known?
²⁹^(AY)O land, land, land,
Hear the word of the Lord!

³⁰This is what the Lord says:

‘Write this man down as ^(AZ)childless,
A man who will ^(BA)not prosper in his days;
For no man among his ^(BB)descendants will prosper
Sitting on the throne of David
Or ruling again in Judah.’”

Four Thousand Men Fed

8 In those days, ^(A)when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned His disciples and *said to them, ²“^(B)I feel compassion for the ^[a]people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat. ³And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” ⁴And His disciples replied to Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough ^[b]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” ⁵And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” ⁶And He *directed the ^[c]people to recline on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve, and they served them to the ^[d]people. ⁷They also had a few small fish; and ^(C)after He had blessed them, He told the disciples to serve these as well. ⁸And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large ^(D)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. ⁹About four thousand ^[e]men were there; and He dismissed them. ¹⁰And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of ^(E)Dalmanutha.

¹¹^(F)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, ^(G)demanding from Him a ^[f]sign from heaven, ^[g]to test Him. ¹²^(H)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation demand a ^[h]sign? Truly I say to you, ^[i]^(I)no ^[j]sign will be given to this generation!” ¹³And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

¹⁴And the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. ¹⁵And He was giving orders to them, saying, “^(J)Watch out! Beware of the ^[k]leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of ^(K)Herod.” ¹⁶And they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. ¹⁷And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? ^(L)Do you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart ^[l]hardened? ¹⁸^(M)Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember, ¹⁹when I broke ^(N)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many ^(O)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.” ²⁰“When I broke ^(P)the seven for the four thousand, how many large ^(Q)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.” ²¹And He was saying to them, “^(R)Do you not yet understand?”

²²And they *came to ^(S)Bethsaida. And some people *brought a man who was blind to ^[m]Jesus and *begged Him to ^(T)touch him. ²³Taking the man who was blind by the hand, He ^(U)brought him out of the village; and after ^(V)spitting in his eyes and ^(W)laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?” ²⁴And he ^[n]looked up and said, “I see people, for I see them like trees, walking around.” ²⁵Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. ²⁶And He sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter ^(X)the village.”

Peter’s Confession of Christ

²⁷^(Y)Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of ^(Z)Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” ²⁸^(AA)They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” ²⁹And He continued questioning them: “But who do you say that I am?” ^(AB)Peter answered and *said to Him, “You are the ^[o]Christ.” ³⁰And ^(AC)He ^[p]warned them to tell no one about Him.

³¹^(AD)And He began to teach them that ^(AE)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead. ³²And He was stating the matter ^(AF)plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. ³³But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, ^(AG)Satan; for you are not setting your mind on ^[q]God’s purposes, but on man’s.”

³⁴And He summoned the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, ^(AH)take up his cross, and follow Me. ³⁵For ^(AI)whoever wants to save his ^[r]life will lose it, but whoever loses his ^[s]life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. ³⁶For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? ³⁷For what could a person give in exchange for his soul? ³⁸For ^(AJ)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, ^(AK)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He ^(AL)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
