21 Distressed and hungry,(A) they will roam through the land;(B) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(C) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(D) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(E)

[a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(F) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(G) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness(H)
    have seen a great light;(I)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(J)
    a light has dawned.(K)
You have enlarged the nation(L)
    and increased their joy;(M)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.(N)
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(O)
    you have shattered(P)
the yoke(Q) that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,(R)
    the rod of their oppressor.(S)
