The Lord’s Glory in Zion

60 Arise, shine, for your light has come,(A)
and the glory of the Lord shines over you.[a](B)
For look, darkness will cover the earth,
and total darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will shine over you,
and his glory will appear over you.
Nations will come to your light,
and kings to your shining brightness.(C)

Raise your eyes and look around:
they all gather and come to you;
your sons will come from far away,
and your daughters on the hips of nursing mothers.(D)
Then you will see and be radiant,(E)
and your heart will tremble and rejoice,[b]
because the riches of the sea will become yours
and the wealth of the nations will come to you.(F)
Caravans of camels will cover your land[c]
young camels of Midian and Ephah—
all of them will come from Sheba.(G)
They will carry gold and frankincense(H)
and proclaim the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you;
the rams of Nebaioth will serve you(I)
and go up on my altar as an acceptable sacrifice.(J)
I will glorify my beautiful house.(K)

Who are these who fly like a cloud,
like doves to their shelters?(L)
Yes, the coasts and islands will wait for me(M)
with the ships of Tarshish in the lead,(N)
to bring your children from far away,(O)
their silver and gold with them,
for the honor of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,(P)
who has glorified you.(Q)

10 Foreigners will rebuild your walls,(R)
and their kings will serve you.(S)
Although I struck you in my wrath,
yet I will show mercy to you with my favor.(T)
11 Your city gates will always be open;
they will never be shut day or night
so that the wealth of the nations
may be brought into you,(U)
with their kings being led in procession.
12 For the nation and the kingdom
that will not serve you will perish;
those nations will be annihilated.(V)
13 The glory of Lebanon will come to you(W)
its pine, elm, and cypress together(X)
to beautify the place of my sanctuary,
and I will glorify my dwelling place.[d]
14 The sons of your oppressors
will come and bow down to you;(Y)
all who reviled you
will fall facedown at your feet.(Z)
They will call you the City of the Lord,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.(AA)
15 Instead of your being deserted and hated,
with no one passing through,(AB)
I will make you an object of eternal pride,(AC)
a joy from age to age.
16 You will nurse on the milk of nations,
and nurse at the breast of kings;(AD)
you will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior(AE)
and Redeemer,(AF) the Mighty One of Jacob.(AG)
17 I will bring gold instead of bronze;
I will bring silver instead of iron,
bronze instead of wood,
and iron instead of stones.
I will appoint peace as your government
and righteousness as your overseers.
18 Violence will never again be heard of in your land;(AH)
devastation and destruction
will be gone from your borders.
You will call your walls Salvation(AI)
and your city gates Praise.
19 The sun will no longer be your light by day,
and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you.
The Lord will be your everlasting light,(AJ)
and your God will be your splendor.
20 Your sun will no longer set,
and your moon will not fade;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and the days of your sorrow will be over.(AK)
21 All your people will be righteous;(AL)
they will possess the land forever;(AM)
they are the branch I planted,
the work of my[e] hands,
so that I may be glorified.(AN)
22 The least will become a thousand,
the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the Lord;
I will accomplish it quickly in its time.

Messiah’s Jubilee

61 The Spirit of the Lord God is on me,(AO)
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.(AP)
He has sent me to heal[f] the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and freedom to the prisoners;(AQ)
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,(AR)
and the day of our God’s vengeance;(AS)
to comfort(AT) all who mourn,
to provide for those who mourn in Zion;
to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
festive oil instead of mourning,(AU)
and splendid clothes instead of despair.[g]
And they will be called righteous trees,
planted by the Lord
to glorify him.(AV)
They will rebuild the ancient ruins;(AW)
they will restore the former devastations;
they will renew the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
Strangers will stand and feed your flocks,
and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.(AX)

But you will be called the Lord’s priests;(AY)
they will speak of you as ministers of our God;
you will eat the wealth of the nations,
and you will boast in their riches.
In place of your shame, you will have a double portion;(AZ)
in place of disgrace, they will rejoice over their share.
So they will possess double in their land,(BA)
and eternal joy will be theirs.

For I the Lord love justice;(BB)
I hate robbery and injustice;[h]
I will faithfully reward my people
and make a permanent covenant(BC) with them.
Their descendants will be known among the nations,
and their posterity among the peoples.
All who see them will recognize
that they are a people the Lord has blessed.

10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord,
I exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation
and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness,(BD)
as a groom wears a turban
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.(BE)
11 For as the earth produces its growth,
and as a garden enables what is sown to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations.(BF)

Paul’s Apostolic Authority

10 Now I, Paul, myself, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble among you in person but bold toward you when absent. I beg you that when I am present I will not need to be bold with the confidence by which I plan to challenge certain people who think we are living according to the flesh.(A) For although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh, since the weapons of our warfare(B) are not of the flesh, but are powerful(C) through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge(D) of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. And we are ready to punish any disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

Look at what is obvious.[a] If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ,(E) let him remind himself of this: Just as he belongs to Christ, so do we. For if I boast a little too much about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up(F) and not for tearing you down, I will not be put to shame. I don’t want to seem as though I am trying to terrify you with my letters. 10 For it is said, “His letters are weighty and powerful, but his physical presence is weak and his public speaking amounts to nothing.” 11 Let such a person consider this: What we are in our letters, when we are absent, we will also be in our actions when we are present.

12 For we don’t dare classify or compare ourselves with some who commend(G) themselves. But in measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves to themselves,(H) they lack understanding.(I) 13 We, however, will not boast beyond measure but according to the measure of the area of ministry that God has assigned(J) to us, which reaches even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we had not reached you, since we have come to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We are not boasting beyond measure about other people’s labors. On the contrary, we have the hope(K) that as your faith increases, our area of ministry will be greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel to the regions beyond you(L) without boasting about what has already been done in someone else’s area of ministry.(M) 17 So let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.[b](N) 18 For it is not the one commending himself who is approved, but the one the Lord commends.(O)

36 He causes the hungry to settle there,
and they establish a city where they can live.(A)
37 They sow fields and plant vineyards
that yield a fruitful harvest.(B)
38 He blesses them, and they multiply greatly;(C)
he does not let their livestock decrease.(D)

39 When they are diminished and are humbled
by cruel oppression and sorrow,(E)
40 he pours contempt on nobles(F)
and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.(G)
41 But he lifts the needy out of their suffering(H)
and makes their families multiply like flocks.(I)
42 The upright see it and rejoice,(J)
and all injustice shuts its mouth.(K)

43 Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things
and consider the Lord’s acts of faithful love.(L)

26 My son, give me your heart,
and let your eyes observe my ways.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit,(A)
and a wayward woman is a narrow well;
28 indeed, she sets an ambush like a robber(B)
and increases the number of unfaithful people.
