⁵ And I said: “Woe is me! ^(A)For I am lost; ^(B)for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the ^(C)King, the Lord of hosts!”

⁶ Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. ⁷ And he ^(D)touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah's Commission from the Lord

⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for ^(E)us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

² “Arise, go to ^(A)Nineveh, that ^(B)great city, and call out against it, ^(C)for their evil^[a] has come up before me.” ³ But Jonah ^(D)rose to flee to ^(E)Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to ^(F)Joppa and found a ship going to ^(G)Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to ^(H)Tarshish, ^(I)away from the presence of the Lord.

Jonah Goes to Nineveh

3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, ² “Arise, go to ^(A)Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” ³ So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now ^(B)Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,^[a] three days' journey in breadth.^{[b] 4} Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” ^5 (C)And the people of Nineveh believed God. ^(D)They called for a fast and ^(E)put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

The People of Nineveh Repent

⁶ The word reached^[c] the king of Nineveh, and ^(F)he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, ^(G)and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, ^(H)“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor ^(I)beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, ⁸ but let man and ^(J)beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. ^(K)Let everyone turn from his evil way and from ^(L)the violence that is in his hands. ^9 (M)Who knows? God may turn and relent ^(N)and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

¹⁰ When God saw what they did, ^(O)how they turned from their evil way, ^(P)God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

^9 (A)who saved us and ^(B)called us to^[a] a holy calling, ^(C)not because of our works but because of ^(D)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus ^(E)before the ages began,^{[b] 10} and which now has ^(F)been manifested through ^(G)the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, ^(H)who abolished death and ^(I)brought life and ^(J)immortality to light through the gospel, ^11 (K)for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, ^12 (L)which is why I suffer as I do. But ^(M)I am not ashamed, for ^(N)I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until ^(O)that day ^(P)what has been entrusted to me.^{[c] 13 (Q)}Follow ^(R)the pattern of ^(S)the sound^[d] words ^(T)that you have heard from me, in ^(U)the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. ¹⁴ By the Holy Spirit ^(V)who dwells within us, guard ^(W)the good deposit entrusted to you.
