Isaiah 59:1-15

Evil and Oppression

59 Behold, ^(A)the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
    or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
²^(B)but your iniquities have made a separation
    between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.
³^(C)For your hands are defiled with blood
    and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
    your tongue mutters wickedness.
⁴^(D)No one enters suit justly;
    no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
    ^(E)they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
⁵They hatch adders' eggs;
    they weave the spider's web;
he who eats their eggs dies,
    and from one that is crushed a viper is hatched.
⁶^(F)Their webs will not serve as clothing;
    men will not cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
    and deeds of violence are in their hands.
⁷^(G)Their feet run to evil,
    and they are swift to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
    desolation and destruction are in their highways.
⁸The way of peace they do not know,
    and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
    ^(H)no one who treads on them knows peace.

⁹Therefore justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not overtake us;
^(I)we hope for light, and behold, darkness,
    and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
¹⁰^(J)We grope for the wall like the blind;
    we grope like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
    ^(K)among those in full vigor we are like dead men.
¹¹We all growl like bears;
    ^(L)we moan and moan like doves;
^(M)we hope for justice, but there is none;
    for salvation, but it is far from us.
¹²For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
    and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
    and we know our iniquities:
¹³transgressing, and denying the Lord,
    and turning back from following our God,
^(N)speaking oppression and revolt,
    conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.

Judgment and Redemption

¹⁴^(O)Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter.
¹⁵Truth is lacking,
    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

The Lord saw it, and it displeased him^[a]
that there was no justice.

^(E)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

³^(F)I thank God ^(G)whom I serve, as did my ancestors, ^(H)with a clear conscience, as I remember you ^(I)constantly in my prayers night and day. ⁴^(J)As I remember your tears, ^(K)I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. ⁵I am reminded of ^(L)your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and ^(M)your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. ⁶For this reason I remind you ^(N)to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, ⁷for God gave us ^(O)a spirit not of fear but ^(P)of power and love and self-control.

⁸Therefore ^(Q)do not be ashamed of ^(R)the testimony about our Lord, nor of ^(S)me his prisoner, but ^(T)share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, ⁹^(U)who saved us and ^(V)called us to^[a] a holy calling, ^(W)not because of our works but because of ^(X)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus ^(Y)before the ages began,^[b] ¹⁰and which now has ^(Z)been manifested through ^(AA)the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, ^(AB)who abolished death and ^(AC)brought life and ^(AD)immortality to light through the gospel, ¹¹^(AE)for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, ¹²^(AF)which is why I suffer as I do. But ^(AG)I am not ashamed, for ^(AH)I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until ^(AI)that day ^(AJ)what has been entrusted to me.^[c] ¹³^(AK)Follow ^(AL)the pattern of ^(AM)the sound^[d] words ^(AN)that you have heard from me, in ^(AO)the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. ¹⁴By the Holy Spirit ^(AP)who dwells within us, guard ^(AQ)the good deposit entrusted to you.

Temptations to Sin

⁴²^(A)“Whoever causes one of ^(B)these little ones who believe in me to sin,^[a] ^(C)it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. ⁴³^(D)And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to ^(E)hell,^[b] to ^(F)the unquenchable fire.^[c] ⁴⁵^(G)And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into ^(H)hell. ⁴⁷^(I)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into ^(J)hell, ⁴⁸‘where ^(K)their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ ⁴⁹For everyone will be salted with fire.^[d] ⁵⁰^(L)Salt is good, ^(M)but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? ^(N)Have salt in yourselves, and ^(O)be at peace with one another.”
