(A)“Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
    the people (B)in whose heart is my law;
(C)fear not the reproach of man,
    nor be dismayed at their revilings.
(D)For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
    and the worm will eat them like wool,
(E)but my righteousness will be forever,
    and my salvation to all generations.”

(F)Awake, awake, (G)put on strength,
    O (H)arm of the Lord;
awake, (I)as in days of old,
    the generations of long ago.
Was it not you who cut (J)Rahab in pieces,
    who pierced (K)the dragon?
10 (L)Was it not you who dried up the sea,
    the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a way
    for the redeemed to pass over?
11 (M)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, I am he (N)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of (O)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made (P)like grass,
13 and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    (Q)who stretched out the heavens
    and (R)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of (S)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of (T)the oppressor?
14 (U)He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
    he shall not die and go down (V)to the pit,
    neither shall his bread be lacking.
15 I am the Lord your God,
    (W)who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
16 (X)And I have put my words in your mouth
    (Y)and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
(Z)establishing[a] the heavens
    and (AA)laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

17 (AB)Wake yourself, wake yourself,
    stand up, O Jerusalem,
(AC)you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
    the bowl, (AD)the cup of staggering.
18 (AE)There is none to guide her
    among all the sons she has borne;
there is none to take her by the hand
    among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (AF)These two things have happened to you—
    who will console you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
    who will comfort you?[b]
20 (AG)Your sons have fainted;
    they lie at the head of every street
    like an (AH)antelope (AI)in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
    the rebuke of your God.

21 (AJ)Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted,
    who are drunk, but not with wine:
22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
    your God (AK)who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand (AL)the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
23 (AM)and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
    (AN)who have said to you,
    ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and (AO)you have made your back like the ground
    and like the street for them to pass over.”

The Lord's Coming Salvation

52 (AP)Awake, awake,
    put on your strength, O Zion;
(AQ)put on your beautiful garments,
    O Jerusalem, (AR)the holy city;
(AS)for there shall no more come into you
    the uncircumcised and the unclean.
(AT)Shake yourself from the dust and arise;
    be seated, O Jerusalem;
(AU)loose the bonds from your neck,
    O captive daughter of Zion.

For thus says the Lord: (AV)“You were sold for nothing, and (AW)you shall be redeemed without money.” For thus says the Lord God: (AX)“My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there, and the Assyrian oppressed them for nothing.[c] Now therefore what have I here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail,” declares the Lord, “and (AY)continually all the day my name is despised. Therefore my people shall know my name. (AZ)Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.”

(BA)How beautiful upon the mountains
    are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, (BB)who brings good news of happiness,
    who publishes salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
The voice of (BC)your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
    together they sing for joy;
(BD)for eye to eye they see
    the return of the Lord to Zion.
(BE)Break forth together into singing,
    (BF)you waste places of Jerusalem,
for (BG)the Lord has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 (BH)The Lord has bared his holy arm
    before the eyes of all the nations,
(BI)and all the ends of the earth shall see
    the salvation of our God.

11 (BJ)Depart, depart, go out from there;
    touch no unclean thing;
go out from the midst of her; purify yourselves,
    (BK)you who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12 For you shall not (BL)go out in haste,
    and you shall not go in flight,
(BM)for the Lord will go before you,
    (BN)and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

13 Behold, (BO)my servant shall act wisely;[d]
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
14 As many were astonished at you—
    (BP)his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
15 so (BQ)shall he sprinkle[e] many nations.
    (BR)Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,
(BS)for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 (BT)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[f]
    And to whom has (BU)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    (BV)and like a root out of dry ground;
(BW)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
(BX)He was despised and rejected[g] by men,
    a man of sorrows[h] and acquainted with[i] grief;[j]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[k]
    he was despised, and (BY)we esteemed him not.

(BZ)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    (CA)smitten by God, and afflicted.
(CB)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    (CC)and with his wounds we are healed.
(CD)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(CE)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    (CF)yet he opened not his mouth;
(CG)like a (CH)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, (CI)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    (CJ)and with a rich man in his death,
although (CK)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet (CL)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[l]
(CM)when his soul makes[m] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(CN)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[n] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (CO)the righteous one, my servant,
    (CP)make many to be accounted righteous,
    (CQ)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (CR)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[o]
    (CS)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[p]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
(CT)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

The Eternal Covenant of Peace

54 (CU)“Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;
    break forth into singing and cry aloud,
    you who have not been in labor!
For the children of (CV)the desolate one (CW)will be more
    than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord.
(CX)“Enlarge the place of your tent,
    and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
    and strengthen your stakes.
(CY)For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,
    and your offspring will possess the nations
    and will people the desolate cities.

“Fear not, (CZ)for you will not be ashamed;
    be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
    and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
(DA)For your Maker is your husband,
    the Lord of hosts is his name;
(DB)and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,
    (DC)the God of the whole earth he is called.
(DD)For the Lord has called you
    like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,
like a wife of youth when she is cast off,
    says your God.
(DE)For a brief moment I deserted you,
    but with great compassion I will gather you.
(DF)In overflowing anger for a moment
    I hid my face from you,
(DG)but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”
    says the Lord, your Redeemer.

“This is like (DH)the days of Noah[q] to me:
    as I swore that the waters of Noah
    should no more go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,
    and will not rebuke you.
10 For the mountains may depart
    and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
    and (DI)my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
    says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 (DJ)“O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted,
    behold, (DK)I will set your stones in antimony,
    (DL)and lay your foundations with sapphires.[r]
12 I will make your pinnacles of agate,[s]
    your gates of carbuncles,[t]
    and all your wall of precious stones.
13 (DM)All your children (DN)shall be taught by the Lord,
    (DO)and great shall be the peace of your children.
14 In righteousness you shall be established;
    you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;
    and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15 (DP)If anyone stirs up strife,
    it is not from me;
whoever stirs up strife with you
    shall fall because of you.
16 Behold, I have created the smith
    who blows the fire of coals
    and produces a weapon for its purpose.
I have also created the ravager to destroy;
17     no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
    and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
    (DQ)and their vindication[u] from me, declares the Lord.”

The Compassion of the Lord

55 (DR)“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    (DS)come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
(DT)Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    (DU)hear, that your soul may live;
(DV)and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    (DW)my steadfast, sure love for (DX)David.
(DY)Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
    (DZ)a leader and commander for the peoples.
(EA)Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and (EB)a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
    (EC)for he has glorified you.

(ED)“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;
let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
(EE)For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 (EF)“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    (EG)giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but (EH)it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

12 (EI)“For you shall go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
(EJ)the mountains and the hills before you
    shall break forth into singing,
    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 (EK)Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the Lord,
    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

Salvation for Foreigners

56 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
(EL)for soon my salvation will come,
    and my righteousness be revealed.
Blessed is the man who does this,
    and the son of man who holds it fast,
(EM)who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,
    and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

Let not (EN)the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
    “The Lord will surely separate me from his people”;
and let not the eunuch say,
    “Behold, I am (EO)a dry tree.”
For thus says the Lord:
“To the eunuchs (EP)who keep my Sabbaths,
    who choose the things that please me
    and hold fast my covenant,
(EQ)I will give in my house and within my walls
    a (ER)monument and a name
    better than sons and daughters;
(ES)I will give them an everlasting name
    that shall not be cut off.

“And (ET)the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
    to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
    and to be his servants,
everyone (EU)who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
    and holds fast my covenant—
(EV)these I will bring to (EW)my holy mountain,
    and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
(EX)their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
    will be accepted on my altar;
for (EY)my house shall be called a house of prayer
    for all peoples.”
The Lord God,
    (EZ)who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
(FA)“I will gather yet others to him
    besides those already gathered.”

Israel's Irresponsible Leaders

(FB)All you beasts of the field, come to devour—
    all you beasts in the forest.
10 (FC)His watchmen are blind;
    they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent (FD)dogs;
    they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
    loving to slumber.
11 (FE)The dogs have a mighty appetite;
    they never have enough.
But (FF)they are shepherds who have no understanding;
    they have all turned to their own way,
    (FG)each to his own gain, one and all.
12 (FH)“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;
    let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
(FI)and tomorrow will be like this day,
    great beyond measure.”

Israel's Futile Idolatry

57 The righteous man perishes,
    and no one lays it to heart;
(FJ)devout men are taken away,
    while no one understands.
For the righteous man is taken away from calamity;
    (FK)he enters into peace;
they rest (FL)in their beds
    who walk in their uprightness.
But you, draw near,
    sons of the sorceress,
    (FM)offspring of the adulterer and the loose woman.
Whom are you mocking?
    Against whom (FN)do you open your mouth wide
    and stick out your tongue?
Are you not children of (FO)transgression,
    (FP)the offspring of deceit,
you who burn with lust among (FQ)the oaks,[v]
    under every green tree,
(FR)who slaughter your children in the valleys,
    under the clefts of the rocks?
Among the smooth stones of (FS)the valley is your portion;
    they, they, are your lot;
to them you have poured out a drink offering,
    you have brought a grain offering.
    Shall I relent for these things?
(FT)On a high and lofty mountain
    you have set your bed,
    and there you went up to offer sacrifice.
Behind the door and the doorpost
    you have set up your memorial;
for, deserting me, (FU)you have uncovered your bed,
    you have gone up to it,
    (FV)you have made it wide;
and you have made a covenant for yourself with them,
    you have loved their bed,
    you have looked on nakedness.[w]
You journeyed to the king with oil
    and multiplied your perfumes;
(FW)you sent your envoys far off,
    and sent down even to Sheol.
10 You were wearied with the length of your way,
    (FX)but you did not say, “It is hopeless”;
you found new life for your strength,
    and so you were not faint.[x]

11 (FY)Whom did you dread and fear,
    (FZ)so that you lied,
and did not remember me,
    did not lay it to heart?
(GA)Have I not held my peace, even for a long time,
    and you do not fear me?
12 I will declare your righteousness and your deeds,
    but they will not profit you.
13 (GB)When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you!
    The wind will carry them all off,
    a breath will take them away.
(GC)But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land
    and shall inherit (GD)my holy mountain.

Comfort for the Contrite

14 And it shall be said,
(GE)“Build up, build up, prepare the way,
    remove every obstruction from my people's way.”
15 For thus says (GF)the One who is high and lifted up,
    who inhabits eternity, whose name is (GG)Holy:
(GH)“I dwell in the high and holy place,
    and also (GI)with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
(GJ)to revive the spirit of the lowly,
    and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 (GK)For I will not contend forever,
    nor will I always be angry;
for the spirit would grow faint before me,
    and the breath of life that I made.
17 Because of the iniquity of his (GL)unjust gain I was angry,
    I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
    but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
18 I have seen his ways, (GM)but I will heal him;
    I will lead him (GN)and restore comfort to him and his mourners,
19     (GO)creating (GP)the fruit of the lips.
(GQ)Peace, peace, (GR)to the far and to the near,” says the Lord,
    (GS)“and I will heal him.
20 (GT)But the wicked are like the tossing sea;
    for it cannot be quiet,
    and its waters toss up mire and dirt.
21 (GU)There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
