53 Hvo troede det, vi hørte, for hvem åbenbaredes Herrens Arm? 2 Han skød op som en Kvist for hans Åsyn, som et Rodskud af udtørret Jord, uden Skønhed og Pragt til at drage vort Blik, uden Ydre, så vi syntes om ham, 3 ringeagtet, skyet af Folk, en Smerternes Mand og kendt med Sygdom, en, man skjuler sit Ansigt for, agtet ringe, vi regned ham ikke. 4 Og dog vore Sygdomme bar han, tog vore Smerter på sig; vi regnede ham for plaget, slagen, gjort elendig af Gud. 5 Men han blev såret for vore Overtrædelser, knust for vor Brødres Skyld; os til Fred kom Straf over ham, vi fik Lægedom ved hans Sår. 6 Vi for alle vild som Får, vi vendte os hver sin Vej, men Herren lod falde på ham den Skyld, der lå på os alle. 7 Han blev knust og bar det stille, han oplod ikke sin Mund som et Lam, der føres hen at slagtes, som et Får, der er stumt, når det klippes. han oplod ikke sin Mund. 8 Fra Trængsel og Dom blev han taget, men hvem i hans Samtid tænkte, da han reves fra de levendes Land, at han ramtes for mit Folks Overtrædelse? 9 Hos gudløse gav man ham Grav og Gravkammer hos den rige, endskønt han ej gjorde Uret, og der ikke var Svig i hans Mund.
10 Det var Herrens Vilje at slå ham med Sygdom; når hans Sjæl havde fuldbragt et Skyldoffer, skulde han se Afkom, leve længe og Herrens Vilje lykkes ved hans Hånd. 11 Fordi hans Sjæl har haft Møje, skal han se det, hvorved han skal mættes. Når han kendes, skal min retfærdige Tjener retfærdiggøre de mange, han, som bar deres Overtrædelser. 12 Derfor arver han mange, med mægtige deler han Bytte, fordi han udtømte sin Sjæl til Døden og regnedes blandt Overtrædere; dog bar han manges Synd, og for Overtrædere bad han.

53 Who has believed our message(A)
and to whom has the arm(B) of the Lord been revealed?(C)
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,(D)
and like a root(E) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance(F) that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering,(G) and familiar with pain.(H)
Like one from whom people hide(I) their faces
he was despised,(J) and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,(K)
yet we considered him punished by God,(L)
stricken by him, and afflicted.(M)
5 But he was pierced(N) for our transgressions,(O)
he was crushed(P) for our iniquities;
the punishment(Q) that brought us peace(R) was on him,
and by his wounds(S) we are healed.(T)
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,(U)
each of us has turned to our own way;(V)
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity(W) of us all.
7 He was oppressed(X) and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;(Y)
he was led like a lamb(Z) to the slaughter,(AA)
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[a] and judgment(AB) he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;(AC)
for the transgression(AD) of my people he was punished.[b]
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,(AE)
and with the rich(AF) in his death,
though he had done no violence,(AG)
nor was any deceit in his mouth.(AH)
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will(AI) to crush(AJ) him and cause him to suffer,(AK)
and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,(AL)
he will see his offspring(AM) and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper(AN) in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,(AO)
he will see the light(AP) of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant(AQ) will justify(AR) many,
and he will bear their iniquities.(AS)
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g](AT)
and he will divide the spoils(AU) with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,(AV)
and was numbered with the transgressors.(AW)
For he bore(AX) the sin of many,(AY)
and made intercession(AZ) for the transgressors.

53 Who (A)has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no [a]form or [b]comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no [c]beauty that we should desire Him.
3 (B)He is despised and [d]rejected by men,
A Man of [e]sorrows and (C)acquainted with [f]grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and (D)we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely (E)He has borne our [g]griefs
And carried our [h]sorrows;
Yet we [i]esteemed Him stricken,
[j]Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was (F)wounded[k] for our transgressions,
He was [l]bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His (G)stripes[m] we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord [n]has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet (H)He opened not His mouth;
(I)He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
8 He was (J)taken from [o]prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For (K)He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
9 (L)And [p]they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any (M)deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to [q]bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul (N)an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 [r]He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge (O)My righteous (P)Servant shall (Q)justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 (R)Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
(S)And He shall divide the [s]spoil with the strong,
Because He (T)poured out His soul unto death,
And He was (U)numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And (V)made intercession for the transgressors.

53 (A)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
And to whom has (B)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,

by his knowledge shall (V)the righteous one, my servant,
(W)make many to be accounted righteous,
(X)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (Y)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[k]
(Z)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[l]
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
(AA)yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
