28 Woe to the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim
    and the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
    at the head of the fertile valley,
    those overcome with wine!^(A)

⁵ On the day of our king the officials
    became sick with the heat of wine;
    he stretched out his hand with mockers.^(A)

³ Trampled under foot will be
    the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim.^(A)
4 And the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
    at the head of the fertile valley,
will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer;
    whoever sees it eats it up
    as soon as it comes to hand.^(B)

⁶ who drink wine from bowls
    and anoint themselves with the finest oils
    but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!^(A)

6 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion
    and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria,
the notables of the first of the nations,
    to whom the house of Israel resorts!^(A)

⁸ they lay themselves down beside every altar
    on garments taken in pledge;
and in the house of their God they drink
    wine bought with fines they imposed.^(A)
