for you have destroyed your land
    and killed your people.

Let the offspring^(B) of the wicked^(C)
    never be mentioned^(D) again.

¹⁰ You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.^(A)

¹⁹ He has no offspring^(A) or descendants^(B) among his people,
    no survivor^(C) where once he lived.^(D)

¹³ May his descendants be cut off,^(A)
    their names blotted out^(B) from the next generation.

²⁸ For the Lord loves the just
    and will not forsake his faithful ones.^(A)

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed^[a];
    the offspring of the wicked will perish.^(B)

¹⁵ Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
    all who are caught will fall^(A) by the sword.^(B)
16 Their infants^(C) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
    their houses will be looted and their wives violated.^(D)

¹⁷ See, I will stir up^(E) against them the Medes,^(F)
    who do not care for silver
    and have no delight in gold.^(G)
18 Their bows^(H) will strike down the young men;^(I)
    they will have no mercy^(J) on infants,
    nor will they look with compassion on children.^(K)
19 Babylon,^(L) the jewel of kingdoms,^(M)
    the pride and glory^(N) of the Babylonians,^[a]
will be overthrown^(O) by God
    like Sodom and Gomorrah.^(P)

⁴ Woe to the sinful nation,
    a people whose guilt is great,^(A)
a brood of evildoers,^(B)
    children given to corruption!^(C)
They have forsaken^(D) the Lord;
    they have spurned the Holy One^(E) of Israel
    and turned their backs^(F) on him.

⁸ Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,^(A)
    happy is the one who repays you
    according to what you have done to us.
⁹ Happy is the one who seizes your infants
    and dashes them^(B) against the rocks.

¹⁶ His roots dry up below^(A)
    and his branches wither above.^(B)
