Satana învinuieşte pe Iov
2 Fiii lui Dumnezeu au venit într-o zi(A) de s-au înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. Şi a venit şi Satana în mijlocul lor şi s-a înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. 2 Domnul a zis Satanei: „De unde vii?” Şi Satana a răspuns(B) Domnului: „De la cutreierarea pământului şi de la plimbarea pe care am făcut-o pe el.” 3 Domnul a zis Satanei: „Ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu este nimeni ca el pe pământ. Este un om fără prihană(C) şi curat la suflet. El se teme de Dumnezeu şi se abate de la rău. El se ţine tare(D) în neprihănirea lui, şi tu Mă îndemni să-l pierd(E) fără pricină.” 4 Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: „Piele pentru piele! Omul dă tot ce are pentru viaţa lui. 5 Dar ia întinde-Ţi(F) mâna şi atinge-Te de oasele(G) şi de carnea lui, şi sunt încredinţat că Te va blestema în faţă.” 6 Domnul(H) a zis Satanei: „Iată, ţi-l dau pe mână: numai cruţă-i viaţa.” 7 Şi Satana a plecat dinaintea Domnului.
Apoi a lovit pe Iov cu o bubă rea, din talpa(I) piciorului până în creştetul capului. 8 Şi Iov a luat un ciob să se scarpine şi a şezut pe cenuşă(J). 9 Nevastă-sa i-a zis: „Tu rămâi(K) neclintit(L) în neprihănirea ta! Blestemă pe Dumnezeu şi mori!” 10 Dar Iov i-a răspuns: „Vorbeşti ca o femeie nebună. Ce, primim(M) de la Dumnezeu binele şi să nu primim şi răul?”
În toate(N) acestea, Iov n-a păcătuit(O) deloc cu buzele lui.
Cei trei prieteni vin la Iov
11 Trei prieteni(P) ai lui Iov, Elifaz din Teman(Q), Bildad din Şuah(R) şi Ţofar din Naama, au aflat de toate nenorocirile care-l loviseră. S-au sfătuit şi au plecat de acasă să se ducă să-i plângă de milă(S) şi să-l mângâie. 12 Ridicându-şi ochii de departe, nu l-au mai cunoscut. Şi au ridicat glasul şi au plâns. Şi-au sfâşiat mantalele şi au aruncat(T) cu ţărână în văzduh deasupra capetelor lor. 13 Şi au şezut pe pământ, lângă el, şapte zile şi şapte(U) nopţi, fără să-i spună o vorbă, căci vedeau cât de mare îi este durerea.

– De unde vii?
Satan I-a răspuns:
– De la cutreierarea pământului şi de la plimbarea ce am făcut-o pe el.
3 Domnul i-a zis lui Satan:
– L-ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu mai este nimeni ca el pe pământ, un om integru şi drept, care se teme de Dumnezeu şi se fereşte de rău. Chiar şi acum, el rămâne neclintit în curăţia lui, deşi M-ai stârnit împotriva lui ca să-l distrug fără motiv.
4 Atunci Satan I-a răspuns Domnului:
– Piele pentru piele[a]! Omul dă tot ce are pentru viaţa sa. 5 Ia întinde-Ţi mâna şi atinge-te de carnea lui şi de oasele lui şi vei vedea că Te va blestema în faţă!
6 Domnul i-a răspuns lui Satan:
– Iată, ţi-l dau pe mână, numai cruţă-i viaţa!
7 Satan a ieşit din prezenţa Domnului şi l-a umplut pe Iov de bube dureroase din talpa piciorului până-n creştetul capului. 8 Iov a luat un ciob de lut cu care să se scarpine şi s-a aşezat în cenuşă.
9 Atunci soţia lui i-a zis:
– Încă rămâi neclintit în curăţia ta? Blestemă-L pe Dumnezeu şi mori!
10 El i-a răspuns:
– Vorbeşti ca o femeie nebună. Ce?! Să primim de la Dumnezeu doar binele şi să nu primim şi răul?
În toate acestea Iov nu a păcătuit deloc prin vorbele sale.
Cei trei prieteni ai lui Iov
11 Trei prieteni de-ai lui Iov, Elifaz din Teman, Bildad din Şuah şi Ţofar din Naamat, au auzit de nenorocirea care s-a abătut asupra lui şi s-au înţeles să meargă împreună la el, pentru a-l mângâia sufleteşte şi a-l îmbărbăta. 12 Când şi-au ridicat privirea de departe, abia l-au mai recunoscut. Ei au început să se tânguie şi să plângă. Şi-au sfâşiat mantiile şi şi-au presărat ţărână pe cap. 13 S-au aşezat lângă el pe pământ şi au rămas aşa vreme de şapte zile şi şapte nopţi. Aceştia n-au scos nici un cuvânt, căci vedeau cât de mare îi era durerea.

2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.
2 And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
3 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Satan’s Second Test of Job
2 One day the sons of God(A) came again to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before the Lord. 2 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”
“From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.”
3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity,(B) who fears God and turns away from evil.(C) He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him, to destroy him without just cause.”
4 “Skin for skin!” Satan answered the Lord. “A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand and strike(D) his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
6 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “he is in your power; only spare his life.” 7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and infected Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.(E) 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes.[a](F)
9 His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!”
10 “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.[b]
Job’s Three Friends
11 Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,(G) Bildad the Shuhite,(H) and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had happened to him, each of them came from his home. They met together to go and sympathize with him and comfort(I) him. 12 When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognize him. They wept aloud,(J) and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head.(K) 13 Then they sat on the ground with him seven days and nights,(L) but no one spoke a word to him because they saw that his suffering(M) was very intense.
