Giô-na-than Can Thiệp cho Ða-vít
19 Bấy giờ Sau-lơ nói với Giô-na-than và tất cả bầy tôi của ông rằng họ phải giết Ða-vít mới được. Nhưng Giô-na-than con trai của Sau-lơ rất quý mến Ða-vít. 2 Vì thế Giô-na-than nói với Ða-vít, “Cha anh đang tìm cách giết em. Vậy từ bây giờ cho đến sáng, em hãy coi chừng, hãy kiếm nơi nào kín đáo mà trốn. 3 Anh sẽ đi ra và đứng bên cạnh cha anh trong cánh đồng nơi em trốn. Anh sẽ nói chuyện với cha anh về em, rồi xem cha anh phản ứng thế nào, sau đó anh sẽ báo cho em hay.”
4 Vậy Giô-na-than nói tốt về Ða-vít với Sau-lơ cha ông. Ông nói, “Con xin phụ hoàng đừng vấp phải lầm lỗi mà hại tôi tớ của phụ hoàng là Ða-vít, bởi vì nó không chống lại phụ hoàng, và những việc nó làm đều đem lại ích lợi cho phụ hoàng. 5 Chính nó đã liều mạng để chiến đấu với tên Phi-li-tin, và Chúa đã ban chiến thắng lớn cho toàn dân I-sơ-ra-ên. Chính mắt phụ hoàng đã thấy và vui mừng. Tại sao bây giờ phụ hoàng lại muốn phạm tội làm đổ máu vô tội mà vô cớ muốn giết Ða-vít?”
6 Vậy Sau-lơ nghe theo lời của Giô-na-than. Sau-lơ thề, “Có Chúa hằng sống làm chứng, nó sẽ không bị giết đâu.” 7 Sau đó Giô-na-than gọi Ða-vít và nói cho ông mọi sự đó. Vậy Giô-na-than dẫn Ða-vít đến với Sau-lơ và ông được đứng chầu trước mặt Sau-lơ như trước.
Sau-lơ Giết Hụt Ða-vít Một Lần Nữa
8 Bấy giờ chiến tranh lại tái diễn. Ða-vít được sai đi chiến đấu với quân Phi-li-tin. Ông đánh chúng thất bại nặng nề. Chúng bỏ chạy trước mặt ông. 9 Nhưng một ác thần từ Chúa đến trên Sau-lơ đang khi ông ngồi trong nhà, trong tay cầm một cây giáo, và Ða-vít đang khảy đàn cho ông nghe. 10 Sau-lơ dùng cây giáo ấy phóng vào Ða-vít để ghim ông vào tường, nhưng ông né được và thoát khỏi Sau-lơ, còn mũi giáo thì ghim thấu vào tường. Thế là nội đêm đó, Ða-vít bỏ trốn và thoát được.
Mi-khanh Cứu Mạng Ða-vít
11 Sau-lơ sai các thủ hạ đến canh giữ nhà Ða-vít, để sáng hôm sau giết ông. Nhưng Mi-khanh vợ Ða-vít nói với ông, “Nếu đêm nay anh không cứu mạng mình, thì ngày mai anh sẽ bị giết.” 12 Vậy Mi-khanh dòng Ða-vít xuống qua cửa sổ. Ông trốn đi và thoát được. 13 Mi-khanh lấy một pho tượng, đặt nó nằm trên giường, lấy tấm lông dê phủ lên đầu, còn thân hình thì nàng lấy quần áo phủ lên trên. 14 Khi Sau-lơ sai các thủ hạ đến bắt Ða-vít, nàng bảo, “Anh ấy bị bịnh.” 15 Sau-lơ sai các thủ hạ trở lại chỗ Ða-vít và dặn, “Hãy khiêng nó nằm trên giường đến đây cho ta, để ta giết nó.” 16 Khi các thủ hạ đến nơi, họ chỉ thấy có pho tượng nằm trên giường, với tấm lông dê phủ trên đầu. 17 Sau-lơ nói với Mi-khanh, “Sao con gạt cha như thế nầy, mà để kẻ thù của cha trốn đi, và nó đã trốn thoát được rồi?”
Mi-khanh trả lời Sau-lơ, “Anh ấy nói với con, ‘Hãy để cho anh đi. Tại sao em bắt buộc anh phải giết em?’”
Ða-vít Ðến Gặp Sa-mu-ên
18 Vậy Ða-vít chạy trốn và thoát được. Ông đến với Sa-mu-ên tại Ra-ma và kể cho cụ hay mọi sự Sau-lơ đã làm cho ông. Sau đó ông và Sa-mu-ên đi đến Na-i-ốt. 19 Có người đến báo cho Sau-lơ rằng, “Kìa, Ða-vít đang ở Na-i-ốt trong vùng Ra-ma.” 20 Sau-lơ liền sai các thủ hạ đến bắt Ða-vít. Nhưng khi đến nơi, họ thấy một nhóm tiên tri đang nói tiên tri, có Sa-mu-ên đang dẫn đầu nhóm ấy. Thần của Chúa nhập vào các thủ hạ của Sau-lơ, họ liền bắt đầu nói tiên tri. 21 Khi Sau-lơ nghe báo cáo như thế, ông sai một nhóm thủ hạ khác. Nhóm ấy đến nơi, họ cũng nhập vào và nói tiên tri như nhóm trước. Sau-lơ lại sai nhóm thủ hạ thứ ba. Nhóm nầy đến nơi, họ cũng nhập vào và nói tiên tri như hai nhóm kia. 22 Bấy giờ Sau-lơ bèn đích thân đi đến Ra-ma. Ông đến một nơi gọi là Giếng Lớn của Sê-cư. Ông hỏi, “Sa-mu-ên và Ða-vít ở đâu?”
Người ta trả lời, “Chắc họ đang ở tại Na-i-ốt trong vùng Ra-ma.” 23 Vậy ông đến Na-i-ốt trong vùng Ra-ma. Nhưng Thần của Ðức Chúa Trời ngự trên ông. Ông vừa đi vừa nói tiên tri cho đến khi ông đến Na-i-ốt trong vùng Ra-ma. 24 Ông cởi bỏ áo của ông ra và nói tiên tri trước mặt Sa-mu-ên như vậy. Ông ở trần và nằm đó suốt ngày và suốt đêm. Vì vậy người ta đã nói với nhau, “Chẳng lẽ Sau-lơ cũng thuộc vào hàng ngũ các tiên tri sao?”

Saul Tries to Kill David
19 Saul told his son Jonathan(A) and all the attendants to kill(B) David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David 2 and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding(C) and stay there. 3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak(D) to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
4 Jonathan spoke(E) well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong(F) to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. 5 He took his life(G) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory(H) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent(I) man like David by killing him for no reason?”
6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”
7 So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.(J)
8 Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.
9 But an evil[a] spirit(K) from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,(L) 10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded(M) him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.
11 Saul sent men to David’s house to watch(N) it and to kill him in the morning.(O) But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through a window,(P) and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol(Q) and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head.
14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said,(R) “He is ill.”
15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.
17 Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?”
Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’”
18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah(S) and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul: “David is in Naioth at Ramah”; 20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets(T) prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on(U) Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.(V) 21 Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”
“Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said.
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying(W) until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped(X) off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s(Y) presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(Z)

19 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. (A)But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. 2 And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. 3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” 4 And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king (B)sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. 5 For (C)he took his life in his hand (D)and he struck down the Philistine, (E)and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against (F)innocent blood by killing David without cause?” 6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, (G)“As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” 7 And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence (H)as before.
8 And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. 9 (I)Then a harmful spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. (J)And David was playing the lyre. 10 (K)And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
11 (L)Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 (M)So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped. 13 Michal took (N)an image[a] and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” 15 Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 16 And when the messengers came in, behold, (O)the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. 17 Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. (P)Why should I kill you?’”
18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at (Q)Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, (R)the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, (S)and they also prophesied. 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, (T)and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, (U)and they also prophesied. 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in (V)Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. (W)And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 (X)And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, (Y)“Is Saul also among the prophets?”
