God’s Case against Israel
4 Hear the word of the Lord,(A) people of Israel,
for the Lord has a case(B)
against the inhabitants of the land:
There is no truth,(C) no faithful love,(D)
and no knowledge of God(E) in the land!
2 Cursing,(F) lying,(G) murder,(H) stealing,(I)
and adultery(J) are rampant;
one act of bloodshed follows another.(K)
3 For this reason the land mourns,(L)
and everyone who lives in it languishes,
along with the wild animals(M) and the birds of the sky;
even the fish of the sea disappear.(N)
4 But let no one dispute;(O) let no one argue,
for my case is against you priests.[a][b](P)
5 You will stumble by day;(Q)
the prophet will also stumble with you by night.
And I will destroy your mother.(R)
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.(S)
Because you have rejected knowledge,(T)
I will reject you(U) from serving as my priest.
Since you have forgotten the law of your God,(V)
I will also forget your sons.
7 The more they multiplied,(W)
the more they sinned against me.
I[c] will change their[d] honor into disgrace.(X)
8 They feed on the sin[e] of my people;(Y)
they have an appetite for their iniquity.(Z)
9 The same judgment will happen
to both people and priests.(AA)
I will punish them for their ways(AB)
and repay them for their deeds.
10 They will eat but not be satisfied;(AC)
they will be promiscuous(AD) but not multiply.
For they have abandoned their devotion to the Lord.(AE)
11 Promiscuity,(AF) wine, and new wine
take away one’s understanding.(AG)
12 My people consult their wooden idols,(AH)
and their divining rods inform them.
For a spirit of promiscuity leads them astray;(AI)
they act promiscuously(AJ)
in disobedience to[f] their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops,(AK)
and they burn offerings on the hills,(AL)
and under oaks, poplars, and terebinths,(AM)
because their shade is pleasant.
And so your daughters act promiscuously
and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters
when they act promiscuously
or your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
for the men themselves go off with prostitutes(AN)
and make sacrifices with cult prostitutes.(AO)
People without discernment are doomed.(AP)
Warnings for Israel and Judah
15 Israel, if you act promiscuously,
don’t let Judah become guilty!
Do not go to Gilgal(AQ)
or make a pilgrimage to Beth-aven,[g](AR)
and do not swear an oath: As the Lord lives!(AS)
16 For Israel is as obstinate as a stubborn cow.(AT)
Can the Lord now shepherd them
like a lamb in an open meadow?(AU)
17 Ephraim is attached to idols;(AV)
leave him alone!(AW)
18 When their drinking is over,
they turn to promiscuity.
Israel’s leaders[h] fervently love disgrace.[i]
19 A wind with its wings will carry them off,[j](AX)
and they will be ashamed of their sacrifices.

4 Vous, les Israélites, ╵écoutez la parole ╵que vous adresse l’Eternel,
car l’Eternel est en procès ╵avec les habitants de ce pays :
« La vérité a disparu ╵dans le pays,
il n’y a plus d’amour
on n’y connaît pas Dieu.
2 On n’y voit que parjure, ╵et tromperies.
Le crime, le vol et l’adultère ╵se multiplient.
La violence s’étend,
les meurtres s’ajoutent aux meurtres.
3 C’est pourquoi le pays ╵passera par le deuil,
et tous ses habitants dépériront,
jusqu’aux bêtes sauvages ╵et aux oiseaux du ciel ;
les poissons de la mer ╵disparaîtront aussi.
La trahison des prêtres
4 Mais que nul ne conteste,
que nul ne fasse de reproche,
car c’est contre vous, prêtres, ╵que je suis en procès[a].
5 En plein jour, vous trébucherez,
les prophètes eux-mêmes ╵trébucheront de nuit ╵en votre compagnie,
et je réduirai au silence ╵Israël, votre mère[b].
6 Oui, mon peuple périt
faute de connaissance
parce que vous, les prêtres, ╵vous avez rejeté ╵la connaissance.
Je vous rejetterai ╵et vous ne serez plus mes prêtres.
Vous avez oublié ╵la Loi de votre Dieu ;
moi aussi, à mon tour, ╵j’oublierai vos enfants.
7 Tous, tant qu’ils sont,
ils ont commis des fautes contre moi.
Je transformerai donc ╵leur gloire en infamie[c].
8 Les prêtres se repaissent ╵du péché de mon peuple,
et leurs désirs se portent ╵vers ses iniquités.
9 Aussi il en sera des prêtres ╵comme des gens du peuple,
je les ferai payer
pour leur conduite,
je rendrai à chacun ╵selon ce qu’il a fait.
10 Ils mangeront ╵sans être rassasiés,
ils se prostitueront[d] ╵mais n’auront pas d’enfants,
car ils ont abandonné l’Eternel
11 pour s’adonner ╵à la prostitution ╵ainsi qu’au vin.
Alors le vin nouveau ╵leur a fait perdre la raison.
Idolâtrie et débauche
12 Ce sont ses dieux de bois ╵que mon peuple consulte,
et voilà que c’est son bâton[e] ╵qui lui répond.
Car un vent de prostitution ╵les fait errer,
ils s’égarent loin de leur Dieu ╵en se prostituant[f].
13 Ils vont offrir des sacrifices ╵au sommet des montagnes
et brûler des parfums ╵sur les collines,
sous le chêne et le peuplier ╵et sous le térébinthe
dont l’ombrage est si doux.
Voilà pourquoi vos filles ╵vont se prostituer,
pourquoi vos belles-filles ╵commettent l’adultère.
14 Je ne punirai pas vos filles ╵pour leurs prostitutions,
vos belles-filles
à cause de leurs adultères,
car les prêtres eux-mêmes ╵vont à l’écart ╵avec des courtisanes,
et, avec des prostituées sacrées, ╵les voilà qui offrent leurs sacrifices.
Ainsi court à sa ruine ╵un peuple sans intelligence.
15 Si tu te prostitues, ╵ô Israël,
que Juda ne se rende pas coupable !
N’allez pas à Guilgal[g],
ne montez pas à Beth-Aven[h],
et ne jurez pas en disant :
“L’Eternel est vivant.”
16 Car comme une vache rétive, ╵Israël est rétif.
Croyez-vous maintenant ╵que l’Eternel les fera paître
comme un troupeau d’agneaux ╵dans de vastes prairies ?
17 Le peuple d’Ephraïm[i] ╵s’est lié aux idoles[j].
Qu’il aille son chemin !
18 A-t-il cuvé son vin,
le voilà qui se vautre ╵dans la prostitution,
et ses chefs sont épris ╵de ce qui fait leur honte.
19 Un ouragan ╵les emportera tous,
ils connaîtront la honte ╵à cause de leurs sacrifices[k].

The Charge Against Israel
4 Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
because the Lord has a charge(A) to bring
against you who live in the land:(B)
“There is no faithfulness,(C) no love,
no acknowledgment(D) of God in the land.(E)
2 There is only cursing,[a] lying(F) and murder,(G)
stealing(H) and adultery;(I)
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.(J)
3 Because of this the land dries up,(K)
and all who live in it waste away;(L)
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
and the fish in the sea are swept away.(M)
4 “But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.(N)
5 You stumble(O) day and night,
and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother(P)—
6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.(Q)
“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law(R) of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
7 The more priests there were,
the more they sinned against me;
they exchanged their glorious God[b](S) for something disgraceful.(T)
8 They feed on the sins of my people
and relish their wickedness.(U)
9 And it will be: Like people, like priests.(V)
I will punish both of them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.(W)
10 “They will eat but not have enough;(X)
they will engage in prostitution(Y) but not flourish,
because they have deserted(Z) the Lord
to give themselves 11 to prostitution;(AA)
old wine(AB) and new wine
take away their understanding.(AC)
12 My people consult a wooden idol,(AD)
and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.(AE)
A spirit of prostitution(AF) leads them astray;(AG)
they are unfaithful(AH) to their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak,(AI) poplar and terebinth,
where the shade is pleasant.(AJ)
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution(AK)
and your daughters-in-law to adultery.(AL)
14 “I will not punish your daughters
when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots(AM)
and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes(AN)—
a people without understanding(AO) will come to ruin!(AP)
15 “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
do not let Judah become guilty.
“Do not go to Gilgal;(AQ)
do not go up to Beth Aven.[c](AR)
And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’(AS)
16 The Israelites are stubborn,(AT)
like a stubborn heifer.(AU)
How then can the Lord pasture them
like lambs(AV) in a meadow?
17 Ephraim is joined to idols;
leave him alone!
18 Even when their drinks are gone,
they continue their prostitution;
their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
19 A whirlwind(AW) will sweep them away,
and their sacrifices will bring them shame.(AX)
