13 By (A)a prophet (B)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
    and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (C)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
    so his Lord (D)will leave his bloodguilt on him
    (E)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
    (F)he was exalted in Israel,
    but he incurred guilt (G)through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
    and (H)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
    (I)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
    “Those who offer human sacrifice (J)kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be (K)like the morning mist
    or (L)like the dew that goes early away,
(M)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
    or (N)like smoke from a window.

But (O)I am the Lord your God
    from the land of Egypt;
(P)you know no God but me,
    and (Q)besides me there is no savior.
(R)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
    in the land of drought;
(S)but when they had grazed,[a] they became full,
    (T)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
    (U)therefore they forgot me.
So (V)I am to them like a lion;
    (W)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them (X)like a bear robbed of her cubs;
    I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
    (Y)as a wild beast would rip them open.

He destroys[b] you, O Israel,
    for you are against me, against (Z)your helper.
10 (AA)Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
    Where are all your rulers—
those of whom (AB)you said,
    “Give me a king and princes”?
11 (AC)I gave you a king in my anger,
    and (AD)I took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (AE)bound up;
    his sin is (AF)kept in store.
13 (AG)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
    but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
    (AH)at the opening of the womb.

14 (AI)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
    (AJ)I shall redeem them from Death.[c]
(AK)O (AL)Death, where are your plagues?
    (AM)O (AN)Sheol, where is your sting?
    (AO)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

15 Though (AP)he may flourish among his brothers,
    (AQ)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
    rising from the wilderness,
(AR)and his fountain shall dry up;
    his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (AS)his treasury
    of every precious thing.
16 [d] Samaria (AT)shall bear her guilt,
    because (AU)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
    (AV)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
    and their (AW)pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 (AX)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
    for (AY)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
    and return to the Lord;
say to him,
    “Take away all iniquity;
accept (AZ)what is good,
    and we will pay with bulls
    (BA)the vows[e] of our lips.
(BB)Assyria shall not save us;
    (BC)we will not ride on horses;
and (BD)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
    to the work of our hands.
(BE)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I (BF)will heal their apostasy;
    (BG)I will love them freely,
    for my anger has turned from them.
(BH)I will be like the dew to Israel;
    (BI)he shall blossom like the lily;
    he shall take root like the trees (BJ)of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
    his beauty shall be (BK)like the olive,
    and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and (BL)dwell beneath my[f] shadow;
    they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
    their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O (BM)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
    It is I who answer and look after you.[g]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
    (BN)from me comes your fruit.

(BO)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
    whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
    and (BP)the upright walk in them,
    (BQ)but transgressors stumble in them.
