Hosea 11-13
Christian Standard Bible
The Lord’s Love for Israel
11 When Israel was a child, I loved him,(A)
and out of Egypt I called my son.(B)
2 Israel called to the Egyptians(C)
even as Israel was leaving them.[a]
They kept sacrificing to the Baals(D)
and burning offerings to idols.(E)
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,(F)
taking them[b] by the hand,[c](G)
but they never knew that I healed them.(H)
4 I led them with human cords,
with ropes of love.(I)
To them I was like one
who eases the yoke from their jaws;(J)
I bent down to give them food.(K)
5 Israel will not return to the land of Egypt
and Assyria will be his king,(L)
because they refused to repent.(M)
6 A sword will whirl through his cities;(N)
it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,[d](O)
because of their schemes.(P)
7 My people are bent on turning from me.(Q)
Though they call to him on high,
he will not exalt them at all.
8 How can I give you up, Ephraim?(R)
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?(S)
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?(T)
I have had a change of heart;
my compassion is stirred!
9 I will not vent the full fury of my anger;(U)
I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim.(V)
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One among you;(W)
I will not come in rage.[e]
10 They will follow the Lord;(X)
he will roar like a lion.(Y)
When he roars,
his children will come trembling from the west.(Z)
11 They will be roused like birds from Egypt
and like doves(AA) from the land of Assyria.(AB)
Then I will settle them in their homes.(AC)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
12 Ephraim surrounds me with lies,(AD)
the house of Israel, with deceit.
Judah still wanders with God
and is faithful to the holy ones.[f]
God’s Case against Jacob’s Heirs
12 Ephraim chases[g] the wind(AE)
and pursues the east wind.(AF)
He continually multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a covenant with Assyria,(AG)
and olive oil is carried to Egypt.(AH)
2 The Lord also has a dispute with Judah.
He is about to punish Jacob according to his conduct;(AI)
he will repay him based on his actions.
3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel,(AJ)
and as an adult he wrestled with God.(AK)
4 Jacob struggled with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.(AL)
He found him at Bethel,(AM)
and there he spoke with him.[h](AN)
5 The Lord is the God of Armies;
the Lord is his name.(AO)
6 But you must return to your God.(AP)
Maintain love and justice,(AQ)
and always put your hope in God.(AR)
7 A merchant loves to extort(AS)
with dishonest scales in his hands.(AT)
8 But Ephraim thinks,
“How rich I have become;(AU)
I made it all myself.
In all my earnings,
no one can find any iniquity in me(AV)
that I can be punished for!” [i]
Judgment on Apostate Israel
9 I have been the Lord your God
ever since[j] the land of Egypt.(AW)
I will make you live in tents again,(AX)
as in the festival days.
10 I will speak through the prophets(AY)
and grant many visions;
I will give parables through the prophets.(AZ)
11 Since Gilead is full of evil,(BA)
they will certainly come to nothing.
They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal;(BB)
even their altars will be like piles of rocks(BC)
on the furrows of a field.
Further Indictment of Jacob’s Heirs
12 Jacob fled to the territory of Aram.(BD)
Israel worked to earn a wife;(BE)
he tended flocks for a wife.(BF)
13 The Lord brought Israel from Egypt by a prophet,(BG)
and Israel was tended by a prophet.
14 Ephraim has provoked bitter anger,(BH)
so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him(BI)
and repay him for his contempt.(BJ)
13 When Ephraim spoke,(BK) there was trembling;
he was exalted in Israel.(BL)
But he incurred guilt through Baal(BM) and died.
2 Now they continue to sin
and make themselves a cast image,(BN)
idols skillfully made from their silver,(BO)
all of them the work of craftsmen.(BP)
People say about them,
“Let the men who sacrifice[k] kiss the calves.”(BQ)
3 Therefore, they will be like the morning mist,(BR)
like the early dew that vanishes,
like chaff blown from a threshing floor,(BS)
or like smoke from a window.(BT)
Death and Resurrection
4 I have been the Lord your God(BU)
ever since[l] the land of Egypt;
you know no God but me,(BV)
and no Savior exists besides me.(BW)
5 I knew[m] you in the wilderness,(BX)
in the land of drought.
6 When they had pasture,
they became satisfied;(BY)
they were satisfied,
and their hearts became proud.(BZ)
Therefore they forgot me.(CA)
7 So I will be like a lion(CB) to them;
I will lurk like a leopard(CC) on the path.
8 I will attack them
like a bear robbed of her cubs
and tear open the rib cage over their hearts.
I will devour them there like a lioness,(CD)
like a wild beast that would rip them open.
9 I will destroy you, Israel;
you have no help but me.[n](CE)
10 Where now is your king,[o](CF)
that he may save you in all your cities,
and the[p] rulers[q](CG) you demanded, saying,
“Give me a king and leaders”?
11 I give you a king in my anger(CH)
and take away a king in my wrath.(CI)
12 Ephraim’s guilt is preserved;
his sin is stored up.(CJ)
13 Labor pains come on him.(CK)
He is not a wise son;(CL)
when the time comes,
he will not be born.[r](CM)
14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol.
I will redeem[s] them from death.(CN)
Death, where are your barbs?
Sheol, where is your sting?(CO)
Compassion is hidden from my eyes.(CP)
The Coming Judgment
15 Although he flourishes among his brothers,[t](CQ)
an east wind will come,(CR)
a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert.
His water source will fail,
and his spring will run dry.(CS)
The wind[u] will plunder the treasury(CT)
of every precious item.
16 Samaria(CU) will bear her guilt(CV)
because she has rebelled against her God.(CW)
They will fall by the sword;(CX)
their children will be dashed to pieces,(CY)
and their pregnant women ripped open.(CZ)

The Question of Divorce
19 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(A) he departed from Galilee and went to the region of Judea across the Jordan.(B) 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.(C) 3 Some Pharisees approached him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?” (D)
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that he who created[a] them in the beginning made them male and female,[b](E) 5 and he also said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?[c](F) 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
7 “Why then,” they asked him, “did Moses command us to give divorce papers(G) and to send her away?”
8 He told them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts, but it was not like that from the beginning. 9 I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery.”[d](H)
10 His disciples(I) said to him, “If the relationship of a man with his wife is like this, it’s better not to marry.”
11 He responded, “Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given.(J) 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs who were made by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept it should accept it.”
Blessing the Children
13 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them.(K) 14 Jesus said, “Leave the little children alone, and don’t try to keep them from coming to me, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”[e](L) 15 After placing his hands on them, he went on from there.
The Rich Young Ruler
16 Just then someone came up and asked him,(M) “Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?” (N)
17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?”[f] he said to him. “There is only one who is good.[g] If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”(O)
18 “Which ones?” he asked him.
Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness;(P) 19 honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself.[h](Q)
20 “I have kept all these,”[i] the young man told him. “What do I still lack?”
21 “If you want to be perfect,”[j] Jesus said to him, “go, sell your belongings and give to the poor,(R) and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard that, he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.
Possessions and the Kingdom
23 Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.(S) 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”(T)
25 When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, “Then who can be saved?”
26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”(U)
27 Then Peter responded to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you. So what will there be for us?”
28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things,(V) when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,(W) you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother[k] or children or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life.(X) 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.(Y)
