2 [a]As they called them,
So they (A)went [b]from them;
They sacrificed to the Baals,
And burned incense to carved images.
3 “I(B) taught Ephraim to walk,
Taking them by [c]their arms;
But they did not know that (C)I healed them.
4 I drew them with [d]gentle cords,
With bands of love,
And (D)I was to them as those who take the yoke from their [e]neck.

the more they went away;
(B)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.
3 Yet it was (C)I who taught Ephraim to walk;
I took them up by their arms,
but they did not know that (D)I healed them.
4 (E)I led them with cords of kindness,[a]
with the bands of love,
and (F)I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
and (G)I bent down to them and fed them.
