Hosea 11-14
English Standard Version
The Lord's Love for Israel
11 (A)When Israel was a child, (B)I loved him,
and out of Egypt I (C)called (D)my son.
2 (E)The more they were called,
the more they went away;
(F)they kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.
3 Yet it was (G)I who taught Ephraim to walk;
I took them up by their arms,
but they did not know that (H)I healed them.
4 (I)I led them with cords of kindness,[a]
with the bands of love,
and (J)I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
and (K)I bent down to them and fed them.
5 (L)They shall not[b] return to the land of Egypt,
but (M)Assyria shall be their king,
(N)because (O)they have refused to return to me.
6 (P)The sword shall rage against their cities,
consume the bars of their gates,
and devour them (Q)because of their own counsels.
7 My people are bent (R)on turning away from me,
and though (S)they call out to the Most High,
he shall not raise them up at all.
8 How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, O Israel?
(T)How can I make you (U)like Admah?
How can I treat you (V)like Zeboiim?
(W)My heart recoils within me;
my compassion grows warm and tender.
9 I will not execute my burning anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
(X)for I am God and not a man,
(Y)the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.[c]
10 (Z)They shall go after the Lord;
(AA)he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling (AB)from the west;
11 they shall come trembling like birds (AC)from Egypt,
and (AD)like doves (AE)from the land of Assyria,
and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.
12 [d] Ephraim (AF)has surrounded me with lies,
and the house of Israel with deceit,
but Judah still walks with God
and is faithful to the Holy One.
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (AG)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (AH)falsehood and violence;
(AI)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (AJ)oil is carried to Egypt.
The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah
2 (AK)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
3 (AL)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
4 He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(AM)He met God[e] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
5 the Lord, the God of hosts,
(AN)the Lord is his memorial name:
6 “So you, (AO)by the help of your God, return,
(AP)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”
7 A merchant, in whose hands are (AQ)false balances,
he loves (AR)to oppress.
8 Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (AS)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (AT)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
9 (AU)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (AV)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.
10 (AW)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (AX)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (AY)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(AZ)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(BA)their altars also are like stone heaps
(BB)on the furrows of the field.
12 (BC)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (BD)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (BE)a prophet (BF)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (BG)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (BH)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(BI)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.
The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel
13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
(BJ)he was exalted in Israel,
but he incurred guilt (BK)through Baal and died.
2 And now they sin more and more,
and (BL)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
(BM)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
“Those who offer human sacrifice (BN)kiss calves!”
3 Therefore they shall be (BO)like the morning mist
or (BP)like the dew that goes early away,
(BQ)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
or (BR)like smoke from a window.
4 But (BS)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
(BT)you know no God but me,
and (BU)besides me there is no savior.
5 (BV)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
in the land of drought;
6 (BW)but when they had grazed,[f] they became full,
(BX)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
(BY)therefore they forgot me.
7 So (BZ)I am to them like a lion;
(CA)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
8 I will fall upon them (CB)like a bear robbed of her cubs;
I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
(CC)as a wild beast would rip them open.
9 He destroys[g] you, O Israel,
for you are against me, against (CD)your helper.
10 (CE)Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
Where are all your rulers—
those of whom (CF)you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 (CG)I gave you a king in my anger,
and (CH)I took him away in my wrath.
12 The iniquity of Ephraim is (CI)bound up;
his sin is (CJ)kept in store.
13 (CK)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
(CL)at the opening of the womb.
14 (CM)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
(CN)I shall redeem them from Death.[h]
(CO)O (CP)Death, where are your plagues?
(CQ)O (CR)Sheol, where is your sting?
(CS)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.
15 Though (CT)he may flourish among his brothers,
(CU)the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
rising from the wilderness,
(CV)and his fountain shall dry up;
his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip (CW)his treasury
of every precious thing.
16 [i] Samaria (CX)shall bear her guilt,
because (CY)she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
(CZ)their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
and their (DA)pregnant women ripped open.
A Plea to Return to the Lord
14 (DB)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for (DC)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
2 Take with you words
and return to the Lord;
say to him,
“Take away all iniquity;
accept (DD)what is good,
and we will pay with bulls
(DE)the vows[j] of our lips.
3 (DF)Assyria shall not save us;
(DG)we will not ride on horses;
and (DH)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
to the work of our hands.
(DI)In you the orphan finds mercy.”
4 I (DJ)will heal their apostasy;
(DK)I will love them freely,
for my anger has turned from them.
5 (DL)I will be like the dew to Israel;
(DM)he shall blossom like the lily;
he shall take root like the trees (DN)of Lebanon;
6 his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be (DO)like the olive,
and his fragrance like Lebanon.
7 They shall return and (DP)dwell beneath my[k] shadow;
they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.
8 O (DQ)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.[l]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
(DR)from me comes your fruit.
9 (DS)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and (DT)the upright walk in them,
(DU)but transgressors stumble in them.

Colossians 4
English Standard Version
4 Masters, treat your bondservants[a] justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
Further Instructions
2 (A)Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it (B)with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may (C)open to us a door for the word, (D)to declare the mystery of Christ, (E)on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
5 (F)Walk in wisdom toward (G)outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always (H)be gracious, (I)seasoned with salt, (J)so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
Final Greetings
7 Tychicus will tell you (K)all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant[b] in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, 9 and with him (L)Onesimus, our faithful and (M)beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place here.
10 (N)Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark (O)the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—(P)if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and Jesus who is called (Q)Justus. (R)These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and (S)they have been a comfort to me. 12 (T)Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always (U)struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand (V)mature and fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I bear him witness that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis. 14 (W)Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does (X)Demas. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers[c] at Laodicea, and to Nympha and (Y)the church in her house. 16 And when (Z)this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 And say to (AA)Archippus, “See that you fulfill (AB)the ministry that you have received in the Lord.”
18 I, Paul, (AC)write this greeting with my own hand. (AD)Remember (AE)my chains. (AF)Grace be with you.
