13 În credinţă au murit toţi aceştia, fără să fi căpătat(A) lucrurile făgăduite, ci(B) doar le-au văzut şi le-au urat de bine de departe, mărturisind(C) că sunt străini şi călători pe pământ. 14 Cei ce vorbesc în felul acesta arată(D) desluşit că sunt în căutarea unei patrii. 15 Dacă ar fi avut în vedere pe aceea din care ieşiseră, negreşit că ar fi avut vreme să se întoarcă în ea. 16 Dar doreau o patrie mai bună, adică o patrie cerească. De aceea, lui Dumnezeu nu-I este ruşine să(E) Se numească Dumnezeul lor, căci le-a(F) pregătit o cetate.

13 Toţi aceştia au murit crezând, însă fără să primească lucrurile promise, ci doar le-au văzut de departe, le-au salutat şi au mărturisit că sunt străini şi peregrini pe pământ. 14 Cei care vorbesc în acest fel arată că sunt în căutarea unei patrii. 15 Dacă ei s-ar fi gândit la ţara din care au plecat, ar fi avut ocazia să se întoarcă în ea, 16 însă ei aspirau după o ţară mai bună, adică una cerească. De aceea, lui Dumnezeu nu-I este ruşine să fie numit Dumnezeul lor, pentru că El a pregătit o cetate pentru ei.

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(A) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(B) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(C) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(D) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(E) Therefore God is not ashamed(F) to be called their God,(G) for he has prepared a city(H) for them.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
