Descendants of Adam

5 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him ^(A)in the likeness of God. ² He created them ^(B)male and female, and He ^(C)blessed them and named them ^[a]Man in the day when they were created.

³ When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he ^[b]became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. ⁴ Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. ⁵ So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.

⁶ Seth lived one hundred and five years, and became the father of Enosh. ⁷ Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters. ⁸ So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.

⁹ Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan. ¹⁰ Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. ¹¹ So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.

¹² Kenan lived seventy years, and became the father of Mahalalel. ¹³ Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters. ¹⁴ So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.

¹⁵ Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Jared. ¹⁶ Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters. ¹⁷ So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.

¹⁸ Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and became the father of Enoch. ¹⁹ Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters. ²⁰ So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.

²¹ Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. ²² Then Enoch ^(D)walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. ²³ So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. ^24 (E)Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God ^(F)took him.

²⁵ Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and became the father of Lamech. ²⁶ Then Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other sons and daughters. ²⁷ So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.

²⁸ Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and became the father of a son. ²⁹ Now he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will ^[c]give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from ^(G)the ground which the Lord has cursed.” ³⁰ Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters. ³¹ So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.

³² Noah was ^(H)five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Descendants of Noah

10 Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood.

^2 (A)The sons of Japheth were ^(B)Gomer and Magog and ^(C)Madai and ^(D)Javan and Tubal and ^(E)Meshech and Tiras. ³ The sons of Gomer were ^(F)Ashkenaz and ^[a]Riphath and ^(G)Togarmah. ⁴ The sons of Javan were Elishah and ^(H)Tarshish, Kittim and ^[b]Dodanim. ⁵ From these the coastlands of the nations ^[c]were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

^6 (I)The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. ⁷ The sons of Cush were ^(J)Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and ^(K)Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were ^(L)Sheba and ^(M)Dedan. ⁸ Now Cush ^[d]became the father of Nimrod; he ^[e]became a mighty one on the earth. ⁹ He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” ¹⁰ The beginning of his kingdom was ^[f](N)Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of ^(O)Shinar. ¹¹ From that land he went forth ^(P)into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, ¹² and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. ¹³ Mizraim ^[g]became the father of ^(Q)Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim ¹⁴ and ^(R)Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.

¹⁵ Canaan ^[h]became the father of ^(S)Sidon, his firstborn, and ^(T)Heth ¹⁶ and ^(U)the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite ¹⁷ and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite ¹⁸ and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. ^19 (V)The territory of the Canaanite ^[i]extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward ^(W)Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. ²⁰ These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.

²¹ Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the ^[j]older brother of Japheth, children were born. ^22 (X)The sons of Shem were ^(Y)Elam and Asshur and ^(Z)Arpachshad and ^(AA)Lud and Aram. ²³ The sons of Aram were ^(AB)Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. ²⁴ Arpachshad ^[k]became the father of ^(AC)Shelah; and Shelah ^[l]became the father of Eber. ^25 (AD)Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was ^[m]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. ²⁶ Joktan ^[n]became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah ²⁷ and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah ²⁸ and ^[o]Obal and Abimael and Sheba ²⁹ and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. ³⁰ Now their ^[p]settlement ^[q]extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. ³¹ These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations.

³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and ^(AE)out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.

Descendants of Shem

^10 (A)These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and ^[a]became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; ¹¹ and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.

¹² Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah; ¹³ and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.

¹⁴ Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber; ¹⁵ and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.

¹⁶ Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg; ¹⁷ and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.

¹⁸ Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu; ¹⁹ and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.

²⁰ Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug; ²¹ and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.

²² Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor; ²³ and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.

²⁴ Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of ^(B)Terah; ²⁵ and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.

²⁶ Terah lived seventy years, and became ^(C)the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

²⁷ Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and ^(D)Haran became the father of ^(E)Lot. ²⁸ Haran died ^[b]in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in ^(F)Ur of the Chaldeans. ²⁹ Abram and ^(G)Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was ^(H)Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was ^(I)Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah ^[c]and Iscah. ^30 (J)Sarai was barren; she had no child.

³¹ Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out ^[d]together from ^(K)Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and ^[e]settled there. ³² The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

¹¹ It came about after the death of Abraham, that ^(A)God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac ^[a]lived by ^(B)Beer-lahai-roi.

Descendants of Ishmael

¹² Now these are the records of the generations of ^(C)Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maid, bore to Abraham; ¹³ and these are the names of ^(D)the sons of Ishmael, by their names, ^[b]in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam ¹⁴ and Mishma and Dumah and Massa, ¹⁵ Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. ¹⁶ These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; ^(E)twelve princes according to their ^[c]tribes. ¹⁷ These are the years of the life of Ishmael, ^(F)one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was ^(G)gathered to his people. ¹⁸ They ^[d]settled from ^(H)Havilah to ^(I)Shur which is ^[e]east of Egypt ^[f]as one goes toward Assyria; ^(J)he ^[g]settled in defiance of all his ^[h]relatives.

Descendants of Esau

⁹ These then are the records of the generations of Esau the father of ^[a]the Edomites in the hill country of Seir. ¹⁰ These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz the son of Esau’s wife Adah, Reuel the son of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, ^[b]Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz. ¹² Timna was a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz and she bore ^(A)Amalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Esau’s wife Adah. ¹³ These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the sons of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹⁴ These were the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and the ^[c]granddaughter of Zibeon: ^[d]she bore to Esau, Jeush and Jalam and Korah.

¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, are chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, ¹⁶ chief Korah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs ^[e]descended from Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. ¹⁷ These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs ^[f]descended from Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Esau’s wife Basemath. ¹⁸ These are the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah. These are the chiefs ^[g]descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ¹⁹ These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.

²⁰ These are the sons of Seir ^(B)the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan and Shobal and Zibeon and Anah, ²¹ and Dishon and Ezer and Dishan. These are the chiefs ^[h]descended from the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²² The sons of Lotan were Hori and ^[i]Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna. ²³ These are the sons of Shobal: ^[j]Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, ^[k]Shepho and Onam. ²⁴ These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness when he was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon. ²⁵ These are the children of Anah: Dishon, and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ These are the sons of ^[l](C)Dishon: ^[m]Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and ^[n]Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs ^[o]descended from the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah, ³⁰ chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs ^[p]descended from the Horites, according to their various chiefs in the land of Seir.

³¹ Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any ^(D)king reigned over the sons of Israel. ^32 [q](E)Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³ Then Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah became king in his place. ³⁴ Then Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites became king in his place. ³⁵ Then Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who ^[r]defeated Midian in the field of Moab, became king in his place; and the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ Then Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah became king in his place. ³⁷ Then Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates River became king in his place. ³⁸ Then Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor became king in his place. ³⁹ Then Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and ^[s]Hadar became king in his place; and the name of his city was ^[t]Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.

⁴⁰ Now these are the names of the chiefs ^[u]descended from Esau, according to their families and their localities, by their names: chief Timna, chief ^[v]Alvah, chief Jetheth, ⁴¹ chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, ⁴² chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, ⁴³ chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of ^[w]the Edomites), according to their habitations in the land of their possession.
