22 The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for they had an allowance from Pharaoh. They ate from their allowance that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, ‘Understand today that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you. Sow it in the land. 24 At harvest, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh,(A) and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and as food for yourselves, your households, and your dependents.’

22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(A) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(B) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(C) for you so you can plant the ground.(D) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(E) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
