2 seven fine-looking, fat cows were coming up out of the Nile,[a] and they grazed in the reeds. 3 Then seven bad-looking, thin cows were coming up after them from the Nile,[b] and they stood beside the other cows at the edge of the river.[c] 4 The bad-looking, thin cows ate the seven fine-looking, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

- Genesis 41:2 tn Heb “And look, he was standing by the Nile, and look, from the Nile were coming up seven cows, attractive of appearance and fat of flesh.” By the use of the particle הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”), the narrator invites the audience to see the dream through Pharaoh’s eyes.
- Genesis 41:3 tn Heb “And look, seven other cows were coming up after them from the Nile, bad of appearance and thin of flesh.”
- Genesis 41:3 tn Heb “the Nile.” This has been replaced by “the river” in the translation for stylistic reasons.

2 when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat,(A) and they grazed among the reeds.(B) 3 After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. 4 And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.(C)

3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.
4 And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.
