⁸ They said to him, ^(A)“We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, ^(B)“Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”

⁴⁷ The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your ^(A)God is God of gods and ^(B)Lord of kings, and ^(C)a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”

¹⁵ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. ^(A)I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” ¹⁶ Joseph answered Pharaoh, ^(B)“It is not in me; ^(C)God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.”^[a]

²⁸ but ^(A)there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar ^(B)what will be in the latter days. Your dream and ^(C)the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these:

¹⁰ to another ^(A)the working of miracles, to another ^(B)prophecy, to another ^(C)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another ^(D)various kinds of tongues, to another ^(E)the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, ^(F)who apportions to each one individually ^(G)as he wills.

¹¹ There is a man in your kingdom ^(A)in whom is the spirit of the holy gods.^[a] In the days of your father, ^(B)light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him, and King Nebuchadnezzar, your father—your father the king—^(C)made him chief of the magicians, ^(D)enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers, ^12 (E)because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and ^(F)understanding ^(G)to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and ^(H)solve problems were found in this Daniel, ^(I)whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

Daniel Interprets the Handwriting

¹³ Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king answered and said to Daniel, “You are that Daniel, one of ^(J)the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought from Judah. ¹⁴ I have heard of you that ^(K)the spirit of the gods^[b] is in you, and that ^(L)light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. ¹⁵ Now ^(M)the wise men, the ^(N)enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but ^(O)they could not show the interpretation of the matter.

⁸ At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named ^(A)Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is ^(B)the spirit of the holy gods^[a]—and I told him the dream, saying,

¹¹ The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except ^(A)the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”
