² And Jacob said to his ^(A)household and to all who were with him, “Put away ^(B)the foreign gods that are among you, ^(C)purify yourselves, and change your garments.

^14 (A)“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in ^(B)sincerity and in truth, and ^(C)put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of ^[a]the River and ^(D)in Egypt. Serve the Lord!

¹⁵ And the children of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned! ^(A)Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver us this day, we pray.”

^16 (A)So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord. And ^(B)His soul could no longer endure the misery of Israel.

³ Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you ^(A)return to the Lord with all your hearts, then ^(B)put away the foreign gods and the ^(C)Ashtoreths^[a] from among you, and ^(D)prepare your hearts for the Lord, and ^(E)serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
