Jacob Flees from Laban
31 But Jacob soon learned that Laban’s sons were grumbling about him. “Jacob has robbed our father of everything!” they said. “He has gained all his wealth at our father’s expense.” 2 And Jacob began to notice a change in Laban’s attitude toward him.
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your father and grandfather and to your relatives there, and I will be with you.”
4 So Jacob called Rachel and Leah out to the field where he was watching his flock. 5 He said to them, “I have noticed that your father’s attitude toward me has changed. But the God of my father has been with me. 6 You know how hard I have worked for your father, 7 but he has cheated me, changing my wages ten times. But God has not allowed him to do me any harm. 8 For if he said, ‘The speckled animals will be your wages,’ the whole flock began to produce speckled young. And when he changed his mind and said, ‘The striped animals will be your wages,’ then the whole flock produced striped young. 9 In this way, God has taken your father’s animals and given them to me.
10 “One time during the mating season, I had a dream and saw that the male goats mating with the females were streaked, speckled, and spotted. 11 Then in my dream, the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Yes, here I am.’
12 “The angel said, ‘Look up, and you will see that only the streaked, speckled, and spotted males are mating with the females of your flock. For I have seen how Laban has treated you. 13 I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel,[a] the place where you anointed the pillar of stone and made your vow to me. Now get ready and leave this country and return to the land of your birth.’”
14 Rachel and Leah responded, “That’s fine with us! We won’t inherit any of our father’s wealth anyway. 15 He has reduced our rights to those of foreign women. And after he sold us, he wasted the money you paid him for us. 16 All the wealth God has given you from our father legally belongs to us and our children. So go ahead and do whatever God has told you.”
17 So Jacob put his wives and children on camels, 18 and he drove all his livestock in front of him. He packed all the belongings he had acquired in Paddan-aram and set out for the land of Canaan, where his father, Isaac, lived. 19 At the time they left, Laban was some distance away, shearing his sheep. Rachel stole her father’s household idols and took them with her. 20 Jacob outwitted Laban the Aramean, for they set out secretly and never told Laban they were leaving. 21 So Jacob took all his possessions with him and crossed the Euphrates River,[b] heading for the hill country of Gilead.
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 Three days later, Laban was told that Jacob had fled. 23 So he gathered a group of his relatives and set out in hot pursuit. He caught up with Jacob seven days later in the hill country of Gilead. 24 But the previous night God had appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and told him, “I’m warning you—leave Jacob alone!”
25 Laban caught up with Jacob as he was camped in the hill country of Gilead, and he set up his camp not far from Jacob’s. 26 “What do you mean by deceiving me like this?” Laban demanded. “How dare you drag my daughters away like prisoners of war? 27 Why did you slip away secretly? Why did you deceive me? And why didn’t you say you wanted to leave? I would have given you a farewell feast, with singing and music, accompanied by tambourines and harps. 28 Why didn’t you let me kiss my daughters and grandchildren and tell them good-bye? You have acted very foolishly! 29 I could destroy you, but the God of your father appeared to me last night and warned me, ‘Leave Jacob alone!’ 30 I can understand your feeling that you must go, and your intense longing for your father’s home. But why have you stolen my gods?”
31 “I rushed away because I was afraid,” Jacob answered. “I thought you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 But as for your gods, see if you can find them, and let the person who has taken them die! And if you find anything else that belongs to you, identify it before all these relatives of ours, and I will give it back!” But Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the household idols.
33 Laban went first into Jacob’s tent to search there, then into Leah’s, and then the tents of the two servant wives—but he found nothing. Finally, he went into Rachel’s tent. 34 But Rachel had taken the household idols and hidden them in her camel saddle, and now she was sitting on them. When Laban had thoroughly searched her tent without finding them, 35 she said to her father, “Please, sir, forgive me if I don’t get up for you. I’m having my monthly period.” So Laban continued his search, but he could not find the household idols.
36 Then Jacob became very angry, and he challenged Laban. “What’s my crime?” he demanded. “What have I done wrong to make you chase after me as though I were a criminal? 37 You have rummaged through everything I own. Now show me what you found that belongs to you! Set it out here in front of us, before our relatives, for all to see. Let them judge between us!
38 “For twenty years I have been with you, caring for your flocks. In all that time your sheep and goats never miscarried. In all those years I never used a single ram of yours for food. 39 If any were attacked and killed by wild animals, I never showed you the carcass and asked you to reduce the count of your flock. No, I took the loss myself! You made me pay for every stolen animal, whether it was taken in broad daylight or in the dark of night.
40 “I worked for you through the scorching heat of the day and through cold and sleepless nights. 41 Yes, for twenty years I slaved in your house! I worked for fourteen years earning your two daughters, and then six more years for your flock. And you changed my wages ten times! 42 In fact, if the God of my father had not been on my side—the God of Abraham and the fearsome God of Isaac[c]—you would have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen your abuse and my hard work. That is why he appeared to you last night and rebuked you!”
Jacob’s Treaty with Laban
43 Then Laban replied to Jacob, “These women are my daughters, these children are my grandchildren, and these flocks are my flocks—in fact, everything you see is mine. But what can I do now about my daughters and their children? 44 So come, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and it will be a witness to our commitment.”
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a monument. 46 Then he told his family members, “Gather some stones.” So they gathered stones and piled them in a heap. Then Jacob and Laban sat down beside the pile of stones to eat a covenant meal. 47 To commemorate the event, Laban called the place Jegar-sahadutha (which means “witness pile” in Aramaic), and Jacob called it Galeed (which means “witness pile” in Hebrew).
48 Then Laban declared, “This pile of stones will stand as a witness to remind us of the covenant we have made today.” This explains why it was called Galeed—“Witness Pile.” 49 But it was also called Mizpah (which means “watchtower”), for Laban said, “May the Lord keep watch between us to make sure that we keep this covenant when we are out of each other’s sight. 50 If you mistreat my daughters or if you marry other wives, God will see it even if no one else does. He is a witness to this covenant between us.
51 “See this pile of stones,” Laban continued, “and see this monument I have set between us. 52 They stand between us as witnesses of our vows. I will never pass this pile of stones to harm you, and you must never pass these stones or this monument to harm me. 53 I call on the God of our ancestors—the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of my grandfather Nahor—to serve as a judge between us.”
So Jacob took an oath before the fearsome God of his father, Isaac,[d] to respect the boundary line. 54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice to God there on the mountain and invited everyone to a covenant feast. After they had eaten, they spent the night on the mountain.
55 [e]Laban got up early the next morning, and he kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.

3 Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Jacob, “Bumalik ka na sa lupain ng iyong mga ninuno, doon sa mga kamag-anak mo, at makakasama mo ako.”
4 Kaya ipinatawag ni Jacob ang mga asawa niyang sina Raquel at Lea na naroon sa pastulan ng mga hayop niya. 5 Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Napansin ko na nag-iba na ang pakikitungo ng inyong ama sa akin di tulad nang dati. 10 Sinabi pa ni Jacob, “Nang panahon ng pagkakastahan ng mga hayop, nanaginip ako. Nakita ko na ang mga lalaking kambing na kumakasta sa mga babaeng kambing ay mga batik-batik. 11 Sa panaginip ko tinawag ako ng anghel ng Dios. Sinabi niya, ‘Jacob!’ Sumagot ako sa kanya, ‘Narito po ako.’ 12 At sinabi niya, ‘Masdan mo ang lahat ng lalaking kambing na kumakasta sa mga babaeng kambing ay mga batik-batik. Ginawa ko ito dahil nakita ko ang lahat ng ginagawa sa iyo ni Laban. 13 Ako ang Dios na nagpakita sa iyo roon sa Betel, sa lupain kung saan binuhusan mo ng langis ang bato na itinayo mo bilang alaala. At doon ka rin nangako sa akin. Ngayon maghanda ka at umalis sa lugar na ito, at bumalik sa lugar kung saan ka isinilang.’ ”
14 Sumagot si Raquel at si Lea kay Jacob, “Wala na kaming mamanahin sa aming ama. 15 Ibang tao na kami sa paningin niya. Ipinagbili na kami at naubos na niya ang perang pinagbilhan namin. 16 Ang lahat ng yaman na binawi sa kanya ng Dios at ibinigay na sa iyo ay maituturing namin na mamanahin namin at ng aming mga anak. Kaya gawin mo ang sinabi sa iyo ng Dios.”
17-18 Naghanda agad si Jacob para bumalik sa Canaan, sa lupain ng ama niyang si Isaac. Pinasakay niya ang mga anak niya at mga asawa sa mga kamelyo. Dinala niya ang mga hayop niya at ang lahat ng ari-arian niya na naipon niya sa Padan Aram.
19 Nagkataon naman na umalis si Laban para gupitan ang kanyang mga tupa, at habang wala siya kinuha ni Raquel ang mga dios-diosang pag-aari ng kanyang ama. 20 Niloko ni Jacob si Laban na Arameo dahil hindi siya nagpaalam sa pag-alis niya. 21 Nang umalis si Jacob, dala niya ang lahat ng ari-arian niya. Tumawid siya sa Ilog Eufrates at pumunta sa bundok ng Gilead.
Hinabol ni Laban si Jacob
22 Nakalipas ang tatlong araw bago malaman ni Laban na lumayas sina Jacob. 23 Kayaʼt hinabol niya si Jacob kasama ang mga kamag-anak niya sa loob ng pitong araw. Naabutan nila sina Jacob doon sa bundok ng Gilead. 24 Nang gabing iyon, nagpakita ang Dios kay Laban na Arameo sa panaginip. Sinabi ng Dios sa kanya, “Huwag mong gagawan ng masama si Jacob.”
25 Nagtatayo noon si Jacob ng tolda niya sa bundok ng Gilead nang maabutan siya ni Laban. At doon din nagtayo sina Laban ng mga tolda nila. 26 Sinabi ni Laban kay Jacob, “Bakit ginawa mo ito sa akin? Bakit mo ako niloko? At dinala mo ang mga anak ko na parang mga bihag sa labanan. 27 Bakit niloko mo ako at umalis nang hindi nagpapaalam sa akin? Kung nagsabi ka lang, paglalakbayin pa sana kita nang may kagalakan sa pamamagitan ng tugtugan ng tamburin at alpa. 28 Hindi mo man lang ako binigyan ng pagkakataon na mahagkan ang mga apo ko at mga anak bago sila umalis. Hindi maganda itong ginawa mo. 29 May dahilan ako para gawan ka ng masama, kaya lang binalaan ako kagabi ng Dios ng iyong ama na huwag kitang gagawan ng masama. 30 Alam kong sabik na sabik ka nang umuwi. Pero bakit ninakaw mo ang mga dios ko?”
31 Sumagot si Jacob sa kanya, “Hindi ako nagpaalam sa iyo dahil natatakot ako na baka pilitin nʼyong bawiin sa akin ang mga anak mo. 32 Pero kung tungkol sa mga nawawala ninyong dios-diosan, kapag nakita nʼyo ito sa kahit sino sa amin, parurusahan siya ng kamatayan. Sa harapan ng mga kamag-anak natin bilang mga saksi, tingnan nʼyo kung may pag-aari po kayo rito na nasa amin, at kung mayroon ay kunin nʼyo.” Hindi alam ni Jacob na si Raquel pala ang kumuha ng mga dios-diosan ni Laban.
33 Kaya hinanap ni Laban ang mga dios-diosan niya sa tolda ni Jacob, sa tolda ni Lea, at pati sa tolda ng dalawang aliping babae na mga asawa ni Jacob. Pero hindi niya nakita ang mga ito. Paglabas niya sa tolda ni Lea, pumasok siya sa tolda ni Raquel. 34 Pero naitago na ni Raquel ang mga dios-diosan sa lalagyan na ginagamit na upuan sa pagsakay sa kamelyo, at inupuan niya. Hinanap ni Laban ang mga dios-diosan sa tolda ni Raquel pero hindi niya ito makita.
35 Sinabi ni Raquel sa kanya, “Ama, huwag po kayong magalit kung hindi po ako makatayo dahil mayroon akong buwanang dalaw.” At patuloy na naghahanap si Laban pero hindi niya makita ang mga dios-diosan niya.
36 Hindi na mapigilan ni Jacob ang kanyang galit, kaya sinabi niya kay Laban, “Ano ba ang kasalanang nagawa ko at hinabol mo pa ako? 37 Ngayong nahalungkat mo na ang lahat ng ari-arian ko, may nakita ka bang sa iyo? Kung mayroon, ilagay mo rito sa harap para makita ng aking mga kamag-anak at ng iyong mga kamag-anak, at bahala na sila ang humatol sa atin. 38 Sa loob ng 20 taon nang akoʼy nasa inyo, ni minsan hindi nakunan ang iyong mga kambing at tupa. At ni isang lalaking tupa ay hindi ko pinangahasang kainin. 39 Hindi ko na dinadala sa iyo ang mga hayop na pinatay ng mababangis na hayop; pinapalitan ko na lang ito agad. Pinabayaran mo rin sa akin ang mga hayop na ninakaw araw man o gabi. 40 Ganito ang naging kalagayan ko: Kapag araw ay nagtitiis ako sa init, at kung gabi ay nagtitiis ako sa lamig. At palaging kulang ang tulog ko. 41 Sa loob ng 20 taon na pagtira ko sa inyo, 14 na taon akong naglingkod sa iyo para sa iyong dalawang anak na babae. Naglingkod pa ako ng anim na taon para bantayan ang iyong mga hayop. Pero ano ang ginawa mo? Sampung beses mong binago ang pagbabayad mo sa akin. 42 Kung hindi siguro ako sinamahan ng Dios na ginagalang ng aking ama na si Isaac, na siya ring Dios ni Abraham, baka pinalayas mo na ako nang walang dalang anuman. Pero nakita ng Dios ang paghihirap ko at pagtatrabaho, kaya binalaan ka niya kagabi.”
Ang Kasunduan nina Jacob at Laban
43 Sumagot si Laban, “Ang mga babaeng iyan ay anak ko at ang mga anak nila ay mga apo ko. At ang mga hayop na iyan ay akin din. Lahat ng nakikita mo ay akin. Pero ngayon, ano pa ang magagawa ko sa mga anak at apo ko? 44 Ang mabuti siguro, gumawa tayo ng kasunduan. Magtayo tayo ng batong magpapaalala sa atin at magpapatunay ng kasunduan natin.”
45 Kaya kumuha si Jacob ng malaking bato at itinayo niya ito bilang alaala. 46 Pagkatapos, inutusan niya ang mga kamag-anak niya na magtumpok ng mga bato. At kumain sila roon sa tinumpok na mga bato. 47 Pinangalanan ni Laban ang tinumpok na mga bato na Jegar Sahaduta.[a] Pero pinangalanan ito ni Jacob na Galeed.[b]
48 Sinabi ni Laban, “Ang mga batong ito na tinumpok ang magpapatunay sa kasunduan nating dalawa.” Ito ang dahilan kung bakit pinangalanan itong tinumpok sa Galeed. 49 Tinawag din iyon na Mizpa,[c] dahil sinabi pa ni Laban, “Nawaʼy ingatan tayo ng Panginoon sa ating paghihiwalay. 50 At kung hindi mabuti ang pakikitungo mo sa mga anak ko, o kayaʼy mag-aasawa ka pa ng iba, alalahanin mo na kahit hindi ko man ito nalalaman, ang Dios ang magpapatunay ng kasunduan natin.”
51 Muli pang sinabi ni Laban kay Jacob, “Narito ang tinumpok na mga bato at ang bato na alaalang magpapatunay ng kasunduan natin. 52 Ang mga tinumpok na batong ito at ang bato na alaala ang siyang magpapatunay ng ating kasunduan na hindi ako lalampas sa tinumpok na mga batong ito para lusubin ka, at hindi ka rin lalampas sa tinumpok na mga batong ito at sa bato na alaala para lusubin ako. 53 Nawaʼy ang Dios ng lolo mong si Abraham at ang Dios ng aking ama na si Nahor, na siya ring Dios ng kanilang amang si Tera, ang siyang humatol sa ating dalawa.”
Nakipagkasundo rin si Jacob kay Laban sa pangalan ng Dios na iginagalang ng ama niyang si Isaac. 54 Naghandog si Jacob ng hayop doon sa bundok, at tinawag niya ang mga kamag-anak niya para kumain. Kinagabihan, doon sila natulog sa bundok.
55 Kinabukasan, maaga pa ay hinagkan ni Laban at binasbasan ang mga anak at apo niya, at umalis siya pauwi.

31 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.
2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.
3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,
5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.
36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.
38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
49 And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.
51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:
52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
