Nilayasan ni Jacob si Laban
31 Nabalitaan ni Jacob na laging sinasabi ng kanyang mga bayaw na kinamkam na niyang lahat ang ari-arian ng kanilang ama at galing dito ang lahat niyang kayamanan. 2 Napuna rin niyang nagbago na ang pakikitungo sa kanya ni Laban. 3 Kaya sinabi sa kanya ni Yahweh, “Magbalik ka na sa lupain ng iyong mga magulang at mga kamag-anak at sasamahan kita.”
4 Pinasabihan ni Jacob si Raquel at si Lea na tagpuin siya sa parang na kinaroroonan ng kanyang mga kawan. 5 Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Napansin kong iba na ang pagtingin sa akin ng inyong ama, hindi na tulad ng dati. Subalit hindi ako pinabayaan ng Diyos ng aking mga magulang. 6 Alam ninyong ginugol ko ang aking buong lakas sa paglilingkod sa inyong ama. 7 Sa kabila noon, dinadaya pa rin niya ako. Sampung beses na niyang binabago ang kabayaran sa akin ngunit hindi ipinahintulot ng Diyos na ako'y maapi. 8 Kapag sinabi ni Laban na ang ibabayad sa akin ay ang batik-batik, ang buong kawan ay nanganganak nang ganoon. 9 Ang Diyos ang may kaloob na mapasaakin ang kawan ng inyong ama.
10 “Sa panahon ng pag-aasawahan ng mga hayop, ako'y nanaginip. Nakita ko na pawang batik-batik ang lahat ng barakong kambing. 11 Sa aking panaginip, tinawag ako ng anghel ng Diyos at ako nama'y sumagot. 12 Ang sabi sa akin, ‘Jacob, masdan mo ang lahat ng mga barakong kambing, silang lahat ay may batik. Ginawa ko ito sapagkat alam kong dinadaya ka ni Laban. 13 Ako(A) ang Diyos na nagpakita sa iyo sa Bethel na kung saan ay binuhusan mo ng langis ang isang bato bilang alaala. Doon ay gumawa ka rin ng isang panata sa akin. Maghanda ka na at umalis ka sa lupaing ito; umuwi ka na sa iyong lupang sinilangan.’”
14 Sinabi naman nina Raquel at Lea, “Wala na kaming mamanahin sa aming ama. 15 Dayuhan na ang turing niya sa amin. Ipinagbili niya kami, at nilustay ang lahat ng pinagbilhan sa amin. 16 Kaya, ang lahat ng kayamanang inalis ng Diyos sa aming ama ay sa amin at sa aming mga anak. Gawin mo ang sinasabi sa iyo ng Diyos.”
17 Isinakay niya sa kamelyo ang kanyang mga asawa't mga anak. 18 Dinala niya ang kanyang mga kawan at lahat ng kayamanang naipon niya sa Mesopotamia at bumalik sa Canaan, sa lupain ng kanyang amang si Isaac. 19 Wala noon si Laban sapagkat naggugupit ito ng balahibo ng mga tupa. Sinamantala iyon ni Raquel upang kunin ang mga diyus-diyosan sa tolda ng kanyang ama. 20 Nilinlang ni Jacob si Laban na Arameo; hindi niya ipinaalam ang kanyang pag-alis. 21 Tinawid niya ang Ilog Eufrates papunta sa bulubundukin ng Gilead, dala ang lahat niyang ari-arian.
Hinabol ni Laban si Jacob
22 Makaraan ang tatlong araw, nalaman ni Laban ang pag-alis nina Jacob. 23 Isinama niya ang kanyang mga tauhan at hinabol nila si Jacob. Inabot nila ito sa bulubundukin ng Gilead pagkaraan ng pitong araw. 24 Nang gabing iyon, si Laban ay kinausap ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng panaginip. Sinabi sa kanyang huwag pagbabantaan ng anuman si Jacob. 25 Nang dumating si Laban, si Jacob ay nakapagtayo na ng kanyang tolda sa kaburulan. Nagtayo rin ng tolda si Laban sa kaburulang iyon ng Gilead.
26 Tinanong ni Laban si Jacob, “Bakit mo ako nilinlang at itinakas mo pa ang aking mga anak na parang mga bihag? 27 Bakit mo inilihim sa akin ang iyong pag-alis? Sana'y inihatid ko kayo na may tugtugan at awitan sa saliw ng tamburin at alpa. 28 Hindi mo man lamang ako binigyan ng pagkakataong mahagkan ang aking mga anak at mga apo bago sila umalis. Napakalaking kahangalan ang ginawa mong ito! 29 Kung sabagay, kaya kitang saktan, ngunit hindi ko iyon gagawin sapagkat kagabi'y sinabi sa akin ng Diyos ng iyong ama na huwag kitang pagbantaan sa anumang paraan. 30 Alam kong ginawa mo ito dahil sabik na sabik ka nang umuwi sa inyo. Subalit bakit mo naman ninakaw ang aking mga diyos?”
31 Sumagot si Jacob, “Natakot po ako na baka hindi ninyo pasamahin sa akin ang inyong mga anak. 32 Ngayon, kung makita ninyo ang inyong mga diyos sa sinuman sa amin, dapat siyang mamatay. Saksi ang naritong mga kamag-anak natin; tingnan ninyo kung mayroon kayong anumang ari-arian dito at kunin ninyo.” Hindi alam ni Jacob na si Raquel ang kumuha ng mga diyus-diyosan ni Laban.
33 Hinalughog ni Laban ang tolda ni Jacob, ang kay Lea, at gayon din ang sa dalawang aliping babae, ngunit hindi niya nakita ang kanyang mga diyos. Pumasok din siya sa tolda ni Raquel, 34 ngunit naitago na nito ang mga diyus-diyosan sa upuang nasa likod ng kamelyo at iyon ay kanyang inuupuan. Hinalughog na mabuti ni Laban ang buong tolda, ngunit wala siyang nakita. 35 Sinabi ni Raquel sa kanyang ama, “Huwag po kayong magagalit sa akin kung sa harapan ninyo'y hindi ako makatayo, sapagkat ako po'y mayroon ngayon.”[a] Patuloy na naghanap si Laban, ngunit hindi rin niya nakita ang kanyang mga diyus-diyosan.
36 Nagalit nang husto si Jacob at tinanong niya si Laban, “Ano bang pagkakasala ang ginawa ko sa inyo? May batas ba akong nilabag at gayon na lamang ang paghahalughog ninyo? 37 Kung may nakuha kayong ari-arian sa sinuman sa amin, ilabas ninyo at hayaan ninyong hatulan tayo ng ating mga kasamahan! 38 Dalawampung taon tayong nagkasama. Patuloy ang pagdami ng inyong mga tupa't kambing, at ni isang tupang barako sa kawan ninyo'y di ko pinangahasang kainin. 39 Kung may tupang sinila ng mababangis na hayop, hindi ko na ipinapakita sa inyo. Pinapalitan ko agad. Pinipilit ninyo akong magbayad ng anumang nawawala, maging iyo'y ninakaw sa gabi o sa araw. 40 Mahabang panahon akong nagtiis ng matinding init ng araw, at lamig ng gabi. Kulang na kulang ako sa tulog. 41 Iyan ang naranasan ko sa loob ng dalawampung taóng kasama ninyo. Labing-apat na taon akong naglingkod sa inyo dahil sa dalawa ninyong anak na babae, at anim na taon pa para sa inyong mga kawan. Sa kabila noon, sampung beses ninyong binago ang ating partihan. 42 Mabuti na lamang at kasama ko ang Diyos ng aking mga magulang, ang Diyos ni Abraham na sinamba ni Isaac. Kung hindi, marahil ay pinalayas ninyo ako nang walang kadala-dala. Alam ng Diyos ang aking hirap at pagod, kaya, kagabi'y pinagsabihan niya kayo.”
Ang Kasunduan ni Jacob at ni Laban
43 Sinabi ni Laban kay Jacob, “Ang lahat ng dala mo'y akin: aking mga anak, aking mga apo at aking mga kawan. Ngunit ano pa ang magagawa ko? 44 Ang mabuti'y gumawa tayo ng kasunduan. Magbunton tayo ng bato na siyang magpapaalaala ng ating kasunduan.”
45 Naglagay si Jacob ng isang bato bilang isang alaala. 46 Sinabi niya sa kanyang mga tauhan na maglagay rin doon ng bato. Pagkatapos, kumain sila sa tabi ng bunton ng mga bato. 47 Ito'y tinawag ni Laban na Jegar-sahaduta,[b] at Gal-ed[c] naman ang itinawag doon ni Jacob, 48 sapagkat sinabi ni Laban, “Ang buntong ito ng mga bato ang tagapagpaalala ng kasunduan nating dalawa.” 49 Tinawag ding Mizpa[d] ang lugar na iyon sapagkat sinabi ni Laban, “Bantayan nawa tayo ni Yahweh samantalang tayo'y magkalayo. 50 Kapag inapi mo ang aking mga anak, o nag-asawa ka ng iba, alalahanin mo na wala man ako roon, ang Diyos ang saksi sa ating kasunduan.” 51 Pagkatapos, sinabi pa ni Laban, “Narito sa pagitan natin ang mga batong ibinunton ko, at narito rin ang batong inilagay mo. 52 Ang mga ito ang ating palatandaan. Ito rin ang magiging hanggahan natin upang maiwasan ang paglusob sa isa't isa. 53 Ang Diyos ni Abraham at ang Diyos ni Nahor ang hahatol sa atin.” At sa pangalan ng Diyos na sinamba ng ama niyang si Isaac ay sumumpa si Jacob na tutupad siya sa kasunduang ito. 54 Pagkatapos, nagpatay siya ng isang hayop at ito'y inihandog doon sa bundok. Nagsalu-salo sila at doon na rin nagpalipas ng gabi. 55 Kinaumagahan, umuwi na si Laban matapos hagkan ang kanyang mga anak at mga apo.

31 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.
2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.
3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,
5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.
36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.
38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
49 And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.
51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:
52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

Jacob Flees From Laban
31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(A) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(B) 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(C)
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(D) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(E)
4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s(F) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(G) but the God of my father has been with me.(H) 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(I) 7 yet your father has cheated(J) me by changing my wages(K) ten times.(L) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(M) 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(N) then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock(O) and has given them to me.(P)
10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(Q) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(R) said to me in the dream,(S) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(T) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(U) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(V) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(W) where you anointed a pillar(X) and where you made a vow(Y) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(Z)’”
14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(AA) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(AB) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(AC) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(AD) So do whatever God has told you.”
17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(AE) on camels,(AF) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(AG) in Paddan Aram,[a](AH) to go to his father Isaac(AI) in the land of Canaan.(AJ)
19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(AK) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(AL) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(AM) Laban the Aramean(AN) by not telling him he was running away.(AO) 21 So he fled(AP) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(AQ) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(AR)
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 On the third day(AS) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(AT) 23 Taking his relatives(AU) with him(AV), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(AW) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(AX) in a dream at night and said to him,(AY) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(AZ)
25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(BA) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(BB) You’ve deceived me,(BC) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(BD) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(BE) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(BF) and harps?(BG) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(BH) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(BI) but last night the God of your father(BJ) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(BK) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(BL) But why did you steal(BM) my gods?(BN)”
31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(BO) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(BP) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(BQ)
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(BR) and into the tent of the two female servants,(BS) but he found nothing.(BT) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(BU) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(BV) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(BW) through everything in the tent but found nothing.
35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(BX) I’m having my period.(BY)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(BZ)
36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(CA) you that you hunt me down?(CB) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(CC) Put it here in front of your relatives(CD) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(CE)
38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(CF) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(CG) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(CH) by day or night.(CI) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(CJ) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(CK) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(CL) and six years for your flocks,(CM) and you changed my wages(CN) ten times.(CO) 42 If the God of my father,(CP) the God of Abraham(CQ) and the Fear of Isaac,(CR) had not been with me,(CS) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(CT) and last night he rebuked you.(CU)”
43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(CV) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(CW) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(CX)
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(CY) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(CZ) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](DA)
48 Laban said, “This heap(DB) is a witness between you and me today.”(DC) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](DD) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(DE) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(DF) between you and me.”(DG)
51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(DH) and here is this pillar(DI) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(DJ) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(DK) and pillar to my side to harm me.(DL) 53 May the God of Abraham(DM) and the God of Nahor,(DN) the God of their father, judge between us.”(DO)
So Jacob took an oath(DP) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(DQ) 54 He offered a sacrifice(DR) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(DS) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.
55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(DT) and blessed(DU) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](DV)

Jacob Flees from Laban
31 Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father's, and from what was our father's he has gained all this wealth.” 2 And Jacob saw (A)that Laban did not regard him with favor as before. 3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, (B)“Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where his flock was 5 and said to them, (C)“I see that your father does not regard me with favor as he did before. But the God of my father (D)has been with me. 6 (E)You know that I have served your father with all my strength, 7 yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages (F)ten times. But God did not permit him to harm me. 8 If he said, (G)‘The spotted shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore spotted; and if he said, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore striped. 9 Thus God has (H)taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me. 10 In the breeding season of the flock I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream that the goats that mated with the flock were striped, spotted, and mottled. 11 Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am!’ 12 And he said, ‘Lift up your eyes and see, all the goats that mate with the flock are striped, spotted, and mottled, for (I)I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel, (J)where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now (K)arise, go out from this land and return to the land of your kindred.’” 14 Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there (L)any portion or inheritance left to us in our father's house? 15 Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For (M)he has sold us, and he has indeed devoured our money. 16 All the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. Now then, whatever God has said to you, do.”
17 So Jacob arose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 He drove away all his livestock, all his property that he had gained, the livestock in his possession that he had acquired in (N)Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father's (O)household gods. 20 And Jacob tricked[a] Laban the Aramean, by not telling him that he intended to flee. 21 He fled with all that he had and arose and crossed the (P)Euphrates,[b] and (Q)set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.
22 When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled, 23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him for seven days and followed close after him into the hill country of Gilead. 24 But God came to Laban the Aramean (R)in a dream by night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, (S)either good or bad.”
25 And Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen pitched tents in the hill country of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done, that you have (T)tricked me and driven away my daughters like captives of the sword? 27 Why did you flee secretly (U)and trick me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre? 28 And why did you not permit me (V)to kiss my sons and my daughters farewell? Now you have done foolishly. 29 It is (W)in my power to do you harm. But the (X)God of your[c] father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, (Y)either good or bad.’ 30 And now you have gone away because you longed greatly for your father's house, but why did you (Z)steal my gods?” 31 Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 (AA)Anyone with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsmen point out what I have that is yours, and take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel's saddle and sat on them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot (AB)rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the household gods.
36 Then Jacob became angry and berated Laban. Jacob said to Laban, “What is my offense? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me? 37 For you have felt through all my goods; what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsmen and (AC)your kinsmen, that they may decide between us two. 38 These twenty years I have been with you. Your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams of your flocks. 39 What was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you. I bore the loss of it myself. (AD)From my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 There I was: by day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. 41 These twenty years I have been in your house. (AE)I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and (AF)you have changed my wages ten times. 42 (AG)If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the (AH)Fear of Isaac, had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (AI)God saw my affliction and the labor of my hands and (AJ)rebuked you last night.”
43 Then Laban answered and said to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day for these my daughters or for their children whom they have borne? 44 Come now, (AK)let us make a covenant, you and I. (AL)And let it be a witness between you and me.” 45 So Jacob (AM)took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 And Jacob said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha,[d] but Jacob called it Galeed.[e] 48 Laban said, (AN)“This heap is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore he named it Galeed, 49 (AO)and Mizpah,[f] for he said, “The Lord watch between you and me, when we are out of one another's sight. 50 If you oppress my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one is with us, see, (AP)God is witness between you and me.”
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, “See this heap and the pillar, which I have set between you and me. 52 (AQ)This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, to do harm. 53 The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob swore by the (AR)Fear of his father Isaac, 54 and Jacob offered a sacrifice in the hill country and called (AS)his kinsmen to eat bread. They ate bread and spent the night in the hill country.
55 [g] Early in the morning Laban arose and kissed (AT)his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned home.

31 Bấy giờ Gia-cốp nghe các con trai La-ban nói với nhau, “Gia-cốp đã lấy tất cả những gì thuộc về cha chúng ta. Anh ấy được giàu có như thế là nhờ tài sản của cha chúng ta.” 2 Ngoài ra Gia-cốp cũng thấy La-ban đối xử với ông không như trước nữa. 3 Bấy giờ Chúa phán với Gia-cốp, “Hãy trở về xứ sở của tổ tiên ngươi, và về với bà con ngươi. Ta sẽ ở cùng ngươi.”
4 Vậy Gia-cốp cho người gọi Ra-chên và Lê-a đến cánh đồng có đàn súc vật của ông đang ở. 5 Ông nói với họ, “Anh thấy nét mặt của cha hai em không còn tử tế với anh như trước nữa, nhưng Ðức Chúa Trời của cha anh luôn ở với anh. 6 Các em biết anh đã làm việc cho cha các em tận tụy như thế nào. 7 Dù vậy, cha các em đã gạt anh và đã thay đổi công giá của anh mười lần, nhưng Ðức Chúa Trời không cho phép ông làm hại anh. 8 Hễ ông nói, ‘Những con vật lông lấm chấm sẽ là công giá của con,’ thì cả đàn súc vật đều đẻ con có lông lấm chấm. Còn hễ ông nói, ‘Những con có vằn sẽ là công giá của con,’ thì cả đàn súc vật đều đẻ con lông có vằn. 9 Như vậy Ðức Chúa Trời đã lấy đàn súc vật của cha các em mà ban cho anh. 10 Khi đến mùa các con vật giao cấu với nhau, anh ngước mắt lên và thấy trong giấc mơ, và nầy, những con chiên đực phủ trên cả bầy đều đẻ ra những con có vằn, lấm chấm, hoặc có sọc. 11 Thiên Sứ của Ðức Chúa Trời nói với anh trong chiêm bao rằng, ‘Hỡi Gia-cốp;’ anh đáp, ‘Thưa có con đây.’ 12 Ngài phán với anh, ‘Hãy ngước lên và nhìn xem, tất cả dê đực phủ trên bầy sẽ đẻ ra những con có vằn, lấm chấm, hoặc có sọc, vì Ta đã thấy tất cả những gì La-ban đã làm cho ngươi. 13 Ta là Ðức Chúa Trời ở Bê-tên, nơi ngươi đã xức dầu trên một hòn đá và thề nguyện với Ta. Bây giờ hãy lập tức rời khỏi xứ nầy và lên đường trở về xứ ngươi đã chôn nhau cắt rốn.’”
14 Bấy giờ Ra-chên và Lê-a nói với ông, “Chúng em còn có phần gia tài gì trong nhà cha chúng em nữa chăng? 15 Cha há đã không coi chúng em như những người dưng rồi sao? Vì cha đã gả bán chúng em và tiêu sạch số tiền cha đã gả bán chúng em rồi. 16 Tất cả tài sản Ðức Chúa Trời đã lấy từ cha chúng em sẽ thuộc về chúng ta và con cái chúng ta. Vậy bây giờ anh cứ làm điều gì Ðức Chúa Trời đã phán với anh.”
17 Bấy giờ Gia-cốp đứng dậy, đỡ các con và các vợ ông lên lưng các lạc đà. 18 Ông dẫn tất cả những đàn súc vật của ông, tức tất cả tài sản ông có được, đó là những đàn súc vật riêng của ông mà ông đã gây dựng được tại Pa-đan A-ram, để trở về với I-sác cha ông đang sống trong xứ Ca-na-an.
19 Trong lúc La-ban đi hớt lông chiên, Ra-chên đến ăn cắp những tượng gia thần cha bà thờ trong nhà. 20 Gia-cốp đánh lừa La-ban người A-ram bằng cách không nói cho ông ấy biết ông định trốn đi. 21 Thế là ông trốn đi với tất cả những gì ông có. Ông đứng dậy, vượt qua Sông Ơ-phơ-rát,[a] rồi thẳng tiến về miền Cao Nguyên Ghi-lê-át.
La-ban Ðuổi Theo Gia-cốp
22 Ðến ngày thứ ba, người ta báo cho La-ban hay rằng Gia-cốp đã trốn đi rồi. 23 Ông liền triệu tập những người trong dòng họ và đuổi theo Gia-cốp. Sau khi truy đuổi được bảy ngày, ông bắt kịp họ ở miền Cao Nguyên Ghi-lê-át. 24 Nhưng ban đêm trong chiêm bao Ðức Chúa Trời đến báo với ông, “Hãy coi chừng, đừng nói điều gì với Gia-cốp, dù lành hay dữ.”
25 La-ban đuổi theo kịp Gia-cốp. Bấy giờ Gia-cốp đã dựng lều trên núi, và La-ban cùng những người theo ông cũng dựng lều trên Núi Ghi-lê-át.
26 La-ban nói với Gia-cốp, “Con đã làm gì thế? Tại sao con đã gạt cha, và bắt các con gái của cha dẫn đi như thể người ta dùng gươm bắt dẫn các tù binh vậy? 27 Tại sao con lén trốn đi và gạt cha mà không nói cho cha biết? Nếu biết thì cha đã tiễn con ra đi cách vui vẻ với tiếng hát, tiếng trống, và tiếng đàn rồi. 28 Sao con không để cha hôn tiễn các con gái và các cháu ngoại của cha? Con đã hành động thật dại dột! 29 Cha có thừa khả năng làm hại con, nhưng đêm qua, Ðức Chúa Trời của cha con đã nói với cha, ‘Hãy thận trọng, đừng nói điều gì với Gia-cốp, dù lành hay dữ.’ 30 Và cho dù con có phải ra đi, vì con đã nhớ nhà cha con quá đỗi đi nữa, thì tại sao con lại ăn cắp các tượng thần của cha?”
31 Gia-cốp trả lời La-ban, “Thưa, bởi vì con sợ. Con sợ cha sẽ dùng vũ lực đoạt lại các con gái của cha. 32 Nhưng người nào cha tìm thấy có các tượng thần của cha, người ấy sẽ không sống nữa. Trước sự chứng kiến của bà con dòng họ chúng ta đây, xin cha chỉ ra những gì con có mà là của cha, thì xin cha cứ lấy.” Khi ấy Gia-cốp không biết Ra-chên đã ăn cắp các tượng thần của cha bà.
33 Vậy La-ban vào lều của Gia-cốp, rồi vào lều của Lê-a, và vào lều của hai nữ tỳ, nhưng ông không tìm thấy các tượng thần đó. Ông ra khỏi lều của Lê-a và vào lều của Ra-chên. 34 Bấy giờ Ra-chên đã lấy các tượng gia thần đó giấu trong yên lạc đà, rồi ngồi lên trên. La-ban lục lọi khắp nơi trong lều, nhưng không tìm thấy chúng. 35 Bà nói với cha bà, “Xin chúa của con đừng giận, con xin lỗi vì con không thể đứng dậy để chào cha được. Con đang bị kẹt, vì trong người con đang tới thời kỳ hằng tháng của đàn bà.” Vậy ông lục soát khắp nơi, nhưng không tìm được các tượng gia thần của ông.
36 Bấy giờ Gia-cốp nổi giận và trách La-ban. Gia-cốp nói với La-ban, “Con đã làm gì có lỗi với cha? Con đã có tội tình gì mà cha truy đuổi con gắt gao như vậy? 37 Bây giờ cha đã lục soát tất cả đồ đạc của con rồi, cha đã tìm thấy được món gì thuộc về nhà cha không? Xin cha lấy ra đây để các thân nhân của cha và các thân nhân của con quyết định cho hai chúng ta. 38 Trong hai mươi năm qua, con đã ở với cha, những chiên cái và dê cái của cha không hề sẩy thai, con không ăn thịt một con chiên đực nào trong các bầy của cha. 39 Con nào bị thú rừng cắn xé, con cũng không mang xác nó đến cho cha hay, nhưng con tự nhận lấy trách nhiệm và bồi thường. Con nào bị mất trộm dù ban ngày hay ban đêm, cha đều bắt con phải bồi thường. 40 Bao nhiêu năm nay con đã sống như thế nầy: ban ngày chịu nắng hừng thiêu đốt, ban đêm chịu giá lạnh buốt người; mắt con không được một giấc ngủ ngon. 41 Hai mươi năm qua con đã sống trong nhà cha. Con làm việc cho cha mười bốn năm để được hai con gái của cha, và thêm sáu năm để chăn đàn súc vật của cha, và cha đã thay đổi công giá của con mười lần. 42 Nếu Ðức Chúa Trời của cha con, Ðấng I-sác hằng kính sợ, tức là Ðức Chúa Trời của Áp-ra-ham, không ở với con, thì bây giờ chắc hẳn cha đã đuổi con ra tay không rồi. Ðức Chúa Trời đã thấy rõ nỗi khổ của con và công lao khó nhọc của đôi tay con, nên đã khiển trách cha đêm qua đó.”
Gia-cốp và La-ban Kết Ước
43 Bấy giờ La-ban trả lời và nói, “Các cô gái nầy là con gái của cha, các cháu nầy là cháu ngoại của cha, các đàn súc vật nầy là các đàn súc vật của cha. Tất cả những gì con thấy đều là của cha. Nhưng hôm nay cha có thể nói gì được về các con gái nầy của cha hay về những đứa con do chúng sinh ra chăng? 44 Thôi bây giờ hãy lại đây, chúng ta hãy lập một giao ước với nhau. Giao ước đó sẽ làm chứng giữa cha và con.” 45 Vậy Gia-cốp lấy một hòn đá dựng lên làm trụ. 46 Gia-cốp nói với các thân nhân của ông, “Hãy mang đá lại đây.” Họ bèn khuân đá tới chất thành một đống, rồi dùng bữa với nhau bên[b] đống đá ấy. 47 La-ban gọi đống đá ấy là Giê-ga Sa-ha-đu-tha,[c] nhưng Gia-cốp gọi nó là Ga-lê-ết.[d] 48 La-ban nói, “Hôm nay đống đá nầy làm chứng giữa cha và con.” Vì thế nó được gọi là Ga-lê-ết. 49 Người ta cũng gọi nó là Mích-pa,[e] vì ông nói, “Cầu xin Chúa trông chừng con và cha, khi cha con ta xa cách nhau. 50 Nếu con đối xử tệ với các con gái cha, hoặc nếu con cưới thêm vợ khác ngoài các con gái cha, dù không ai có mặt lúc đó, con hãy coi chừng, vì Ðức Chúa Trời làm chứng giữa con và cha.”
51 La-ban nói với Gia-cốp, “Ðây là đống đá và đây là trụ đá cha đã đặt giữa con và cha. 52 Ðống đá nầy làm bằng chứng và trụ đá nầy làm bằng chứng rằng cha sẽ không vượt qua đống đá nầy xông qua bên con, và con cũng không được vượt qua đống đá nầy và trụ đá nầy xông qua bên cha, với ý định làm hại nhau. 53 Cầu xin Ðức Chúa Trời của Áp-ra-ham và Ðức Chúa Trời của Na-hô” –tức Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ họ– “phán xét giữa chúng ta.” Vậy Gia-cốp nhân danh Ðấng mà I-sác cha ông hằng kính sợ để thề. 54 Ðoạn Gia-cốp dâng một con vật hiến tế trên nơi cao và mời mọi người trong bà con dòng họ đến dùng bữa. Dùng bữa xong, họ nghỉ lại đêm đó trên núi.
55 Sáng hôm sau La-ban dậy sớm, hôn các cháu ngoại của ông và các con gái ông. Ông chúc phước cho họ, rồi lên đường trở về nhà ông.[f]
