Agar e Ismael
16 Saraí, la esposa de Abrán, no le daba hijos, pero tenía una sierva egipcia que se llamaba Agar. 2 Entonces Saraí le dijo a Abrán:
«Ya ves que el Señor me ha hecho estéril, así que te ruego que te allegues a mi sierva; tal vez tendré hijos de ella.»
Y Abrán atendió al ruego de Saraí. 3 A los diez años de que Abrán había habitado en la tierra de Canaán, Saraí, la esposa de Abrán, tomó a Agar, su sierva egipcia, y se la dio por mujer a Abrán, su marido. 4 Y él se allegó a Agar, y ésta concibió; y al darse cuenta de que había concebido, comenzó a mirar con desprecio a su señora. 5 Entonces Saraí le dijo a Abrán:
«¡Que mi afrenta recaiga sobre ti! Yo te di por mujer a mi sierva, y al verse encinta me mira con desprecio. ¡Que juzgue el Señor entre tú y yo!»
6 Y Abrán le respondió a Saraí:
«Pues tu sierva está en tus manos. ¡Haz con ella lo que mejor te parezca!»
Y como Saraí la humillaba, ella huyó de su presencia. 7 Pero el ángel del Señor la encontró junto a un manantial en el desierto, que es el manantial que está en el camino a Shur, 8 y le dijo:
«Agar, sierva de Saraí, ¿de dónde vienes, y a dónde vas?»
Y ella respondió:
«Estoy huyendo de Saraí, mi señora.»
9 El ángel del Señor le dijo:
«Regresa con tu señora, y ponte en sus manos.»
10 Además, el ángel del Señor le dijo:
«Voy a multiplicar tu descendencia. Llegarán a ser tantos, que no podrán ser contados.»
11 El ángel del Señor también le dijo:
«Tú has concebido, y darás a luz un hijo. Le pondrás por nombre Ismael,[a] porque el Señor ha oído tu aflicción. 12 Será un hombre indómito; luchará contra todos, y todos lucharán contra él, pero a pesar de todos sus hermanos establecerá su residencia.»
13 Como el Señor le había hablado, ella le dio este nombre: «Tú eres el Dios que ve», pues dijo: «¿Acaso no he visto aquí también al que me ve?», 14 y al manantial lo llamó «Pozo del que vive y me ve». Ese pozo está entre Cades y Bered.
15 Agar dio a luz un hijo de Abrán, y éste le puso por nombre Ismael. 16 Abrán tenía ochenta y seis años de edad cuando Agar dio a luz a Ismael.

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, (A)had borne him no children. And she had (B)an Egyptian maidservant whose name was (C)Hagar. 2 (D)So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord (E)has restrained me from bearing children. Please, (F)go in to my maid; perhaps I shall [a]obtain children by her.” And Abram (G)heeded the voice of Sarai. 3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram (H)had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. 4 So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became (I)despised in her [b]eyes.
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, [c]“My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. (J)The Lord judge between you and me.”
6 (K)So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, (L)she fled from her presence.
7 Now the (M)Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, (N)by the spring on the way to (O)Shur. 8 And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”
9 The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and (P)submit yourself under her hand.” 10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, (Q)“I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” 11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:
“Behold, you are with child,
(R)And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name [d]Ishmael,
Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 (S)He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
(T)And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-[e]the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here [f]seen Him (U)who sees me?” 14 Therefore the well was called (V)Beer Lahai Roi;[g] observe, it is (W)between Kadesh and Bered.
15 So (X)Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
