¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(A) “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens^(B) for four hundred years^(C) in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.^[a]

⁵ You are to respond by saying in the presence of the Lord your God:

My father was a wandering Aramean.^(A) He went down to Egypt with a few people and resided there as an alien.^(B) There he became a great, powerful, and populous nation.
