When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(A) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[a](B) appeared to me at Luz(C) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(D) and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(E) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(F) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(G)

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(H) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(I) just as Reuben(J) and Simeon(K) are mine. Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. As I was returning from Paddan,[b](L) to my sorrow(M) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(N)

When Israel(O) saw the sons of Joseph,(P) he asked, “Who are these?”

“They are the sons God has given me here,”(Q) Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(R) them.”

10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(S) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(T) and embraced them.(U)

11 Israel(V) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(W) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(X)

12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(Y) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(Z) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(AA) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(AB) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(AC) though he was the younger,(AD) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(AE)

15 Then he blessed(AF) Joseph and said,

“May the God before whom my fathers
    Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(AG)
the God who has been my shepherd(AH)
all my life to this day,

And Jacob was told, “Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel [a]strengthened himself and sat up on the bed. Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God (A)Almighty appeared to me at (B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will (C)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and (D)give this land to your descendants after you (E)as an everlasting possession.’ And now your (F)two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. Your [b]offspring [c]whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. But as for me, when I came from Padan, (G)Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”

Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.

And he said, “Please bring them to me, and (H)I will bless them.” 10 Now (I)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he (J)kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (K)“I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!”

12 So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. 14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and (L)laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, (M)guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the (N)firstborn. 15 And (O)he blessed Joseph, and said:

“God, (P)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
