The Death of Jacob

²⁹ Then he gave them these instructions:^(A) “I am about to be gathered to my people.^(B) Bury me with my fathers^(C) in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,^(D)

¹³ They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,^(A) near Mamre,^(B) which Abraham had bought along with the field^(C) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.^(D)

³⁰ but when I rest with my fathers,^(A) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”^(B)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

¹⁵ You, however, will go to your ancestors^(A) in peace and be buried at a good old age.^(B)

²³ to the church of the firstborn,^(A) whose names are written in heaven.^(B) You have come to God, the Judge of all,^(C) to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,^(D)

⁶ We have different gifts,^(A) according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,^(B) then prophesy in accordance with your^[a] faith;^{(C) 7} if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;^{(D) 8} if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;^(E) if it is giving, then give generously;^(F) if it is to lead,^[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

⁹ Love must be sincere.^(G) Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.^{(H) 10} Be devoted to one another in love.^(I) Honor one another above yourselves.^{(J) 11} Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor,^(K) serving the Lord. ¹² Be joyful in hope,^(L) patient in affliction,^(M) faithful in prayer.^{(N) 13} Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.^(O) Practice hospitality.^(P)

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you;^(Q) bless and do not curse. ¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.^{(R) 16} Live in harmony with one another.^(S) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.^[c] Do not be conceited.^(T)

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil.^(U) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.^{(V) 18} If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.^{(W) 19} Do not take revenge,^(X) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[d](Y) says the Lord. ²⁰ On the contrary:

²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

³⁷ Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father^(A) and mother. But here is your servant Kimham.^(B) Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.”

²⁹ Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,^(A) old and full of years.^(B) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.^(C)

⁸ Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age,^(A) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.^{(B) 9} His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him^(C) in the cave of Machpelah^(D) near Mamre,^(E) in the field of Ephron^(F) son of Zohar the Hittite,^{(G) 10} the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.^[a](H) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. ¹¹ After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac,^(I) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.^(J)

Ishmael’s Sons^(K)

¹² This is the account^(L) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar^(M) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.^(N)

¹³ These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth^(O) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar,^(P) Adbeel, Mibsam, ¹⁴ Mishma, Dumah,^(Q) Massa, ¹⁵ Hadad, Tema,^(R) Jetur,^(S) Naphish and Kedemah. ¹⁶ These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers^(T) according to their settlements and camps.^{(U) 17} Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.^(V)
