³⁴ you should answer, ‘Your servants^(A) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’^(B) Then you will be allowed to settle^(C) in the region of Goshen,^(D) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.^(E)”

²⁶ But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians.^(A) And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us?

³² They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews,^(A) for that is detestable to Egyptians.^(B)

³² The men are shepherds;^(A) they tend livestock,^(B) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’^(C)

¹² Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,^(A)

¹⁰ You shall live in the region of Goshen^(A) and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.^(B)

³⁵ That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,^(A) and he placed them in the care of his sons.^(B)

⁵ When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,^(A) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
