²⁰ There he set up an altar^(A) and called it El Elohe Israel.^[a]

⁷ There he built an altar,^(A) and he called the place El Bethel,^[a](B) because it was there that God revealed himself to him^(C) when he was fleeing from his brother.^(D)

²⁸ Then the man said, “Your name^(A) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[a](B) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”^(C)

³³ Abraham planted a tamarisk tree^(A) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,^(B) the Eternal God.^(C)

¹⁸ So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre^(A) at Hebron,^(B) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.^(C)

⁷ The Lord appeared to Abram^(A) and said, “To your offspring^[a] I will give this land.^(B)”^(C) So he built an altar there to the Lord,^(D) who had appeared to him.

⁸ From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel^(E) and pitched his tent,^(F) with Bethel on the west and Ai^(G) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.^(H)

²⁰ Then Noah built an altar to the Lord^(A) and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean^(B) birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings^(C) on it.
