16 Saraï, femme d'Abram, ne lui avait point donné d'enfants. Elle avait une servante Égyptienne, nommée Agar.
2 Et Saraï dit à Abram: Voici, l'Éternel m'a rendue stérile; viens, je te prie, vers ma servante; peut-être aurai-je par elle des enfants. Abram écouta la voix de Saraï.
3 Alors Saraï, femme d'Abram, prit Agar, l'Égyptienne, sa servante, et la donna pour femme à Abram, son mari, après qu'Abram eut habité dix années dans le pays de Canaan.
4 Il alla vers Agar, et elle devint enceinte. Quand elle se vit enceinte, elle regarda sa maîtresse avec mépris.
5 Et Saraï dit à Abram: L'outrage qui m'est fait retombe sur toi. J'ai mis ma servante dans ton sein; et, quand elle a vu qu'elle était enceinte, elle m'a regardée avec mépris. Que l'Éternel soit juge entre moi et toi!
6 Abram répondit à Saraï: Voici, ta servante est en ton pouvoir, agis à son égard comme tu le trouveras bon. Alors Saraï la maltraita; et Agar s'enfuit loin d'elle.
7 L'ange de l'Éternel la trouva près d'une source d'eau dans le désert, près de la source qui est sur le chemin de Schur.
8 Il dit: Agar, servante de Saraï, d'où viens-tu, et où vas-tu? Elle répondit: Je fuis loin de Saraï, ma maîtresse.
9 L'ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Retourne vers ta maîtresse, et humilie-toi sous sa main.
10 L'ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Je multiplierai ta postérité, et elle sera si nombreuse qu'on ne pourra la compter.
11 L'ange de l'Éternel lui dit: Voici, tu es enceinte, et tu enfanteras un fils, à qui tu donneras le nom d'Ismaël; car l'Éternel t'a entendue dans ton affliction.
12 Il sera comme un âne sauvage; sa main sera contre tous, et la main de tous sera contre lui; et il habitera en face de tous ses frères.
13 Elle appela Atta El roï le nom de l'Éternel qui lui avait parlé; car elle dit: Ai-je rien vu ici, après qu'il m'a vue?
14 C'est pourquoi l'on a appelé ce puits le puits de Lachaï roï; il est entre Kadès et Bared.
15 Agar enfanta un fils à Abram; et Abram donna le nom d'Ismaël au fils qu'Agar lui enfanta.
16 Abram était âgé de quatre-vingt-six ans lorsqu'Agar enfanta Ismaël à Abram.

Problemas de Agar y de Ismael
16 Sarai, mujer de Abram, no le daba hijos; pero ella tenía una sierva egipcia que se llamaba Agar. 2 Entonces Sarai dijo a Abram:
—He aquí que el SEÑOR me ha impedido concebir. Únete, por favor, a mi sierva; quizás yo tenga hijos por medio de ella.
Abram hizo caso de las palabras de Sarai. 3 Y Sarai su mujer tomó a Agar, su sierva egipcia, después de haber vivido diez años en la tierra de Canaán, y se la dio por mujer a Abram su marido. 4 Abram se unió a Agar, y ella concibió. Pero al ver que había concebido, empezó a mirar con desprecio a su señora. 5 Entonces Sarai dijo a Abram:
—Mi agravio recaiga sobre ti. Yo puse a mi sierva en tu seno; y ella, viéndose encinta, me mira con desprecio. El SEÑOR juzgue entre tú y yo.
6 Abram respondió a Sarai:
—He aquí, tu sierva está en tus manos. Haz con ella como te parezca bien.
Como Sarai la afligía, ella huyó de su presencia. 7 Pero el ángel del SEÑOR la encontró en el desierto junto a un manantial de agua (el manantial que está en el camino de Shur), 8 y le dijo:
—Agar, sierva de Sarai, ¿de dónde vienes y a dónde vas?
Ella respondió:
—Huyo de la presencia de Sarai, mi señora.
9 El ángel del SEÑOR le dijo:
—Vuelve a tu señora y sométete a su autoridad. 10 —Le dijo también el ángel del SEÑOR—: Multiplicaré tanto tus descendientes, que no podrán ser contados a causa de su gran número. 11 —Le dijo además el ángel del SEÑOR—: He aquí que has concebido y darás a luz un hijo. Y llamarás su nombre Ismael[a], porque el SEÑOR ha escuchado tu aflicción. 12 Él será como un asno montés, un hombre cuya mano estará contra todos, y las manos de todos estarán contra él. Y habitará frente a todos sus hermanos.
13 Ella invocó el nombre del SEÑOR, que hablaba con ella, y dijo:
—Tú eres un Dios que me ve.
Pues pensó: “¿Acaso no he visto aquí al que me ve?”. 14 Por eso llamó al pozo Beer-lajai-roí[b]. He aquí que está entre Cades y Bered.
15 Agar dio a luz un hijo a Abram, y Abram llamó el nombre de su hijo que le dio Agar, Ismael. 16 Abram tenía ochenta y seis años cuando Agar le dio a luz a Ismael.

Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(B) But she had an Egyptian slave(C) named Hagar;(D) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(E) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(F)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(G) ten years,(H) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(I) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(J) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(K)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(L)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(M) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord(N) found Hagar near a spring(O) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(P) 8 And he said, “Hagar,(Q) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(R)
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(S)
11 The angel of the Lord(T) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(U)
You shall name him(V) Ishmael,[a](W)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(X)
12 He will be a wild donkey(Y) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[b] all his brothers.(Z)”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(AA)” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”(AB) 14 That is why the well(AC) was called Beer Lahai Roi[d];(AD) it is still there, between Kadesh(AE) and Bered.
15 So Hagar(AF) bore Abram a son,(AG) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(AH) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(AI) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
