4 În timp ce Petru şi Ioan vorbeau poporului, au venit la ei preoţii, comandantul gărzii Templului şi saducheii[a], 2 foarte supăraţi de faptul că ei dădeau învăţătură poporului şi vesteau în Isus învierea dintre cei morţi. 3 Au pus mâinile pe ei şi i-au aruncat în închisoare până în ziua următoare, căci era deja seară. 4 Însă mulţi dintre cei ce auziseră cuvântarea au crezut, şi numărul bărbaţilor a ajuns la aproape cinci mii.
5 În ziua următoare s-au adunat în Ierusalim conducătorii lor, bătrânii[b] şi cărturarii[c], 6 precum şi Ana – marele preot[d] –, Caiafa[e], Ioan, Alexandru şi toţi cei care erau din neamul marilor preoţi. 7 I-au pus pe apostoli să stea în mijloc şi i-au întrebat:
– Prin ce putere sau în numele cui aţi făcut aceasta?
8 Atunci Petru, plin de Duhul Sfânt, le-a răspuns:
– Conducători şi bătrâni ai poporului, 9 dacă astăzi suntem cercetaţi pentru o faptă bună făcută unui om neputincios şi pentru felul în care a fost el vindecat, 10 să vă fie cunoscut vouă tuturor şi întregului popor Israel că acest om stă sănătos înaintea voastră în Numele lui Isus Cristos din Nazaret, pe Care voi L-aţi răstignit, dar pe Care Dumnezeu L-a înviat dintre cei morţi! 11 El este:
12 În nimeni altul nu este mântuire, căci nu este sub cer nici un alt nume dat oamenilor, în care trebuie să fim mântuiţi!
13 Când au văzut ei îndrăzneala lui Petru şi a lui Ioan şi când şi-au dat seama că erau oameni neînvăţaţi[h] şi de rând, s-au mirat şi au înţeles că fuseseră cu Isus. 14 Văzându-l însă stând lângă ei pe omul care fusese vindecat, n-au avut ce să zică. 15 Prin urmare, le-au poruncit să iasă afară din Sinedriu[i] şi s-au sfătuit între ei, zicând: 16 „Ce să le facem oamenilor acestora? Căci este ştiut de toţi locuitorii Ierusalimului că, prin ei, s-a făcut un semn clar şi nu putem nega. 17 În schimb, pentru ca acest lucru să nu se răspândească şi mai departe în popor, să-i ameninţăm, ca să nu mai vorbească nici unui om în Numele acesta!“ 18 I-au chemat şi le-au poruncit să nu mai vorbească deloc şi să nu mai dea învăţătură în Numele lui Isus. 19 Însă Petru şi Ioan le-au răspuns: „Judecaţi voi înşivă dacă este drept înaintea lui Dumnezeu să ascultăm mai mult de voi decât de Dumnezeu! 20 Căci nu putem să nu vorbim despre ceea ce am văzut şi auzit!“ 21 După ce i-au ameninţat din nou, le-au dat drumul, negăsind un mod prin care să-i pedepsească, din pricina poporului, deoarece toţi Îl slăveau pe Dumnezeu pentru cele întâmplate. 22 Căci omul cu care se făcuse acest semn de vindecare avea mai mult de patruzeci de ani.
Credincioşii se roagă pentru a primi îndrăzneală
23 După ce li s-a dat drumul, s-au dus la ai lor şi le-au istorisit tot ce le spuseseră conducătorii preoţilor şi bătrânii. 24 Când au auzit ei aceste lucruri, şi-au ridicat glasul în acelaşi gând către Dumnezeu şi au zis: „Stăpâne peste toate, Tu, Cel Care ai făcut cerul, pământul, marea şi tot ce este în ele, 25 Tu ai vorbit, prin Duhul Sfânt, prin gura strămoşului nostru David, slujitorul Tău, astfel:
«De ce se întărâtă neamurile
şi de ce cugetă popoarele lucruri deşarte?
26 Regii pământului iau poziţie
şi conducătorii se strâng laolaltă,
împotriva Domnului şi împotriva Unsului[j] Său.»[k]
27 Căci într-adevăr, împotriva Slujitorului Tău cel sfânt, Isus, pe Care L-ai uns Tu, s-au adunat în această cetate Irod[l], Ponţiu Pilat[m], neamurile şi poporul[n] lui Israel, 28 ca să facă, de fapt, tot ceea ce ai hotărât mai dinainte să se întâmple prin mâna Ta şi planul Tău. 29 Şi acum, Doamne, uită-te la ameninţările lor şi dă-le robilor Tăi toată îndrăzneala ca să vestească Cuvântul Tău! 30 Întinde-Ţi mâna ca să se facă vindecări, semne şi minuni prin Numele Slujitorului Tău cel sfânt, Isus!“
31 După ce s-au rugat, locul unde erau adunaţi s-a cutremurat, şi toţi au fost umpluţi de Duhul Sfânt şi au început să vestească Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu cu îndrăzneală.
Credincioşii îşi împart între ei averile
32 Mulţimea celor ce crezuseră era una în inimă şi gând şi nici unul nu spunea că vreunul din bunurile lui este al lui, ci aveau toate în comun. 33 Apostolii depuneau mărturie cu mare putere despre învierea Domnului Isus şi un mare har era peste ei toţi. 34 Căci nu era nimeni printre ei în nevoie, pentru că toţi cei care aveau în proprietatea lor ogoare sau case le vindeau, iar banii obţinuţi pe lucrurile vândute îi aduceau 35 şi-i puneau la picioarele apostolilor; apoi erau împărţiţi fiecăruia după cum avea nevoie. 36 Iosif, numit de apostoli şi Barnabas, care tradus înseamnă „Fiul încurajării“, un levit originar din Cipru, 37 a vândut un ogor care-i aparţinea şi apoi a adus banii şi i-a pus la picioarele apostolilor.

4 Pe când vorbeau Petru şi Ioan norodului, au venit la ei pe neaşteptate preoţii, căpitanul Templului şi saducheii, 2 foarte necăjiţi(A) că învăţau pe norod şi vesteau în Isus învierea din morţi. 3 Au pus mâinile pe ei şi i-au aruncat în temniţă până a doua zi, căci se înserase. 4 Însă mulţi din cei ce auziseră cuvântarea au crezut, şi numărul bărbaţilor credincioşi s-a ridicat aproape la cinci mii. 5 A doua zi, mai-marii norodului, bătrânii şi cărturarii s-au adunat împreună la Ierusalim, 6 cu marele preot Ana(B), Caiafa, Ioan, Alexandru şi toţi cei ce se trăgeau din neamul marilor preoţi. 7 Au pus pe Petru şi pe Ioan în mijlocul lor şi i-au întrebat: „Cu(C) ce putere sau în numele cui aţi făcut voi lucrul acesta?” 8 Atunci(D), Petru, plin de Duhul Sfânt, le-a zis: „Mai-mari ai norodului şi bătrâni ai lui Israel! 9 Fiindcă suntem traşi astăzi la răspundere pentru o facere de bine, făcută unui om bolnav, şi suntem întrebaţi cum a fost vindecat, 10 s-o ştiţi toţi şi s-o ştie tot norodul lui Israel! Omul acesta se înfăţişează înaintea voastră pe deplin sănătos în(E) Numele lui Isus Hristos din Nazaret, pe(F) care voi L-aţi răstignit, dar pe care Dumnezeu L-a înviat din morţi. 11 El(G) este piatra lepădată de voi, zidarii, care a ajuns să fie pusă în capul unghiului. 12 În nimeni altul nu este mântuire, căci nu(H) este sub cer niciun alt Nume dat oamenilor în care trebuie să fim mântuiţi.” 13 Când au văzut ei îndrăzneala lui Petru şi a lui Ioan, s-au mirat, întrucât(I) ştiau că erau oameni necărturari şi de rând, şi au priceput că fuseseră cu Isus. 14 Dar, fiindcă vedeau lângă(J) ei pe omul care fusese vindecat, nu puteau zice nimic împotrivă. 15 Le-au poruncit doar să iasă din sobor, s-au sfătuit între ei 16 şi au zis: „Ce(K) vom face oamenilor acestora? Căci este ştiut(L) de toţi locuitorii Ierusalimului că prin ei s-a făcut o minune vădită, pe care n-o putem tăgădui. 17 Dar, ca să nu se lăţească vestea aceasta mai departe în norod, să-i ameninţăm şi să le poruncim ca de acum încolo să nu mai vorbească nimănui în Numele acesta.” 18 Şi după ce i-au chemat(M), le-au poruncit să nu mai vorbească cu niciun chip, nici să mai înveţe pe oameni în Numele lui Isus. 19 Drept răspuns, Petru şi Ioan le-au zis: „Judecaţi voi singuri dacă(N) este drept înaintea lui Dumnezeu să ascultăm mai mult de voi decât de Dumnezeu, 20 căci(O) noi nu putem să nu vorbim despre ce am văzut şi am auzit”. 21 I-au ameninţat din nou şi i-au lăsat să plece, căci nu ştiau cum să-i pedepsească, din pricina(P) norodului, fiindcă(Q) toţi slăveau pe Dumnezeu pentru cele întâmplate. 22 Căci omul cu care se făcuse această minune de vindecare avea mai bine de patruzeci de ani.

23 După(R) ce li s-a dat drumul, ei s-au dus la ai lor şi le-au istorisit tot ce le spuseseră preoţii cei mai de seamă şi bătrânii. 24 Când au auzit ei aceste lucruri, şi-au ridicat glasul toţi împreună către Dumnezeu şi au zis: „Stăpâne, Doamne, care(S) ai făcut cerul, pământul, marea şi tot ce este în ele! 25 Tu ai zis prin Duhul Sfânt, prin gura părintelui nostru David, robul Tău: Pentru ce(T) se întărâtă neamurile şi pentru ce cugetă noroadele lucruri deşarte? 26 Împăraţii pământului s-au răsculat şi domnitorii s-au unit împotriva Domnului şi împotriva Unsului Său. 27 În(U) adevăr, împotriva Robului Tău celui sfânt(V), Isus, pe(W) care L-ai uns Tu, s-au însoţit în cetatea aceasta Irod şi Pilat din Pont cu neamurile şi cu noroadele lui Israel, 28 ca(X) să facă tot ce hotărâse mai dinainte mâna Ta şi sfatul Tău. 29 Şi acum, Doamne, uită-Te la ameninţările lor, dă putere robilor Tăi să(Y) vestească Cuvântul Tău cu toată îndrăzneala 30 şi întinde-Ţi mâna, ca(Z) să se facă tămăduiri, minuni şi semne prin(AA) Numele Robului(AB) Tău celui sfânt, Isus.” 31 După ce s-au rugat ei, s-a(AC) cutremurat locul unde erau adunaţi; toţi s-au umplut de Duhul Sfânt şi(AD) vesteau Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu cu îndrăzneală.
Unirea şi dragostea credincioşilor
32 Mulţimea celor ce crezuseră era(AE) o inimă şi un suflet. Niciunul(AF) nu zicea că averile lui sunt ale lui, ci aveau toate de obşte. 33 Apostolii mărturiseau cu multă(AG) putere despre(AH) învierea Domnului Isus. Şi un mare(AI) har era peste toţi. 34 Căci nu era niciunul printre ei care să ducă lipsă: toţi(AJ) cei ce aveau ogoare sau case le vindeau, aduceau preţul lucrurilor vândute 35 şi-l(AK) puneau la picioarele apostolilor, apoi(AL) se împărţea fiecăruia după cum avea nevoie. 36 Iosif, numit de apostoli şi Barnaba, adică, în tălmăcire, „fiul mângâierii”, un levit, de neam din Cipru, 37 a vândut un ogor pe care-l avea(AM), a adus banii şi i-a pus la picioarele apostolilor.

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard(A) and the Sadducees(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(C) 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(D) until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(E) to about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers,(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(I) 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(J) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(L) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”(N)
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(Q) 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(R) and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(T) and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(U) 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(V) You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking(W) about what we have seen and heard.”(X)
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(Y) were praising God(Z) for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(AA) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(AB) 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(AC)
“‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.[b]’[c](AD)
27 Indeed Herod(AE) and Pontius Pilate(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(AG) whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(AH) 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(AI) 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”(AK)
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(AM) and spoke the word of God(AN) boldly.(AO)
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(AP) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(AQ) to the resurrection(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(AT) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(AV)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(AW) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(AX)

Peter and John Arrested
4 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the (A)Sadducees came upon them, 2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
Addressing the Sanhedrin
5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as (B)Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, (C)“By what power or by what name have you done this?”
8 (D)Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, (E)that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (F)whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the (G)‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 (H)Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
The Name of Jesus Forbidden
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, (I)and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed (J)standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16 saying, (K)“What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a [a]notable miracle has been done through them is (L)evident[b] to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”
18 (M)So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, (N)“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 (O)For we cannot but speak the things which (P)we have seen and heard.” 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, (Q)because of the people, since they all (R)glorified God for (S)what had been done. 22 For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.
Prayer for Boldness(T)
23 And being let go, (U)they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, (V)You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who [c]by the mouth of Your servant David have said:
(W)‘Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
26 The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.’
27 “For (X)truly against (Y)Your holy Servant Jesus, (Z)whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 (AA)to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants (AB)that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, (AC)and that signs and wonders may be done (AD)through the name of (AE)Your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, (AF)the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, (AG)and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Sharing in All Things
32 Now the multitude of those who believed (AH)were of one heart and one soul; (AI)neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 33 And with (AJ)great power the apostles gave (AK)witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And (AL)great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; (AM)for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 (AN)and laid them at the apostles’ feet; (AO)and they distributed to each as anyone had need.
36 And [d]Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of [e]Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, 37 (AP)having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
