19 Pe când era Apolo(A) în Corint, Pavel, după ce a trecut prin ţinuturile de sus ale Asiei, a ajuns la Efes. Aici, a întâlnit pe câţiva ucenici 2 şi le-a zis: „Aţi primit voi Duhul Sfânt când aţi crezut?” Ei i-au răspuns: „Nici n-am(B) auzit măcar că a fost dat un Duh Sfânt”. 3 „Dar cu ce botez aţi fost botezaţi?” le-a zis el. Şi ei au răspuns: „Cu(C) botezul lui Ioan”. 4 Atunci, Pavel a zis: „Ioan(D) a botezat cu botezul pocăinţei şi spunea norodului să creadă în Cel ce venea după el, adică în Isus”. 5 Când au auzit ei aceste vorbe, au fost botezaţi în(E) Numele Domnului Isus. 6 Când(F) şi-a pus Pavel mâinile peste ei, Duhul Sfânt S-a pogorât peste ei şi vorbeau(G) în alte limbi şi proroceau. 7 Erau cam doisprezece bărbaţi de toţi.
Pavel învaţă pe norod la Efes
8 În urmă(H), Pavel a intrat în sinagogă, unde vorbea cu îndrăzneală. Timp de trei luni a vorbit cu ei despre lucrurile privitoare la(I) Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu şi căuta să înduplece pe cei ce-l ascultau. 9 Dar, fiindcă(J) unii rămâneau împietriţi şi necredincioşi şi vorbeau de rău(K) Calea Domnului înaintea norodului, Pavel a plecat de la ei, a despărţit pe ucenici de ei şi a învăţat în fiecare zi pe norod în şcoala unuia numit Tiran. 10 Lucrul acesta(L) a ţinut doi ani, aşa că toţi cei ce locuiau în Asia, iudei şi greci, au auzit Cuvântul Domnului. 11 Şi Dumnezeu făcea(M) minuni nemaipomenite prin mâinile lui Pavel, 12 până acolo(N) că peste cei bolnavi se puneau basmale sau şorţuri care fuseseră atinse de trupul lui, şi-i lăsau bolile şi ieşeau din ei duhurile rele.
Exorciştii iudei
13 Nişte(O) exorcişti iudei, care umblau din loc în loc, au(P) încercat să cheme Numele Domnului Isus peste cei ce aveau duhuri rele, zicând: „Vă jur pe Isus, pe care-L propovăduieşte Pavel, să ieşiţi afară!” 14 Cei ce făceau lucrul acesta erau şapte feciori ai lui Sceva, un preot iudeu din cei mai de seamă. 15 Duhul cel rău le-a răspuns: „Pe Isus Îl cunosc şi pe Pavel îl ştiu, dar voi cine sunteţi?” 16 Şi omul, în care era duhul cel rău, a sărit asupra lor, i-a biruit pe amândoi şi i-a schingiuit în aşa fel că au fugit goi şi răniţi din casa aceea. 17 Lucrul acesta a fost cunoscut de toţi iudeii, de toţi grecii care locuiau în Efes, şi(Q) i-a apucat frica pe toţi, şi Numele Domnului Isus era proslăvit. 18 Mulţi din cei ce crezuseră veneau să mărturisească(R) şi să spună ce făcuseră. 19 Şi unii din cei ce făcuseră vrăjitorii şi-au adus cărţile şi le-au ars înaintea tuturor; preţul lor s-a socotit la cincizeci de mii de arginţi. 20 Cu atâta(S) putere se răspândea şi se întărea Cuvântul Domnului.
Răscoala argintarului Dimitrie
21 După ce(T) s-au petrecut aceste lucruri, Pavel şi-a(U) pus de gând să se ducă la Ierusalim, trecând prin Macedonia şi Ahaia. „După ce voi merge acolo”, îşi zicea el, „trebuie(V) să văd şi Roma”. 22 A trimis în Macedonia pe doi din(W) ajutoarele lui, pe Timotei şi Erast(X), iar el a mai rămas câtăva vreme în Asia. 23 Pe vremea aceea(Y), s-a făcut o mare tulburare cu privire la Calea(Z) Domnului. 24 Un argintar, numit Dimitrie, făcea temple de argint de-ale Dianei şi aducea lucrătorilor săi nu puţin(AA) câştig cu ele. 25 I-a adunat la un loc, împreună cu cei de aceeaşi meserie, şi le-a zis: „Oamenilor, ştiţi că bogăţia noastră atârnă de meseria aceasta 26 şi vedeţi şi auziţi că Pavel acesta, nu numai în Efes, dar aproape în toată Asia, a înduplecat şi a abătut mult norod şi zice că zeii făcuţi de mâini nu(AB) sunt dumnezei. 27 Primejdia care vine din acest fapt nu este numai că meseria noastră cade în dispreţ, dar şi că templul marii zeiţe Diana este socotit ca o nimica, şi chiar măreţia aceleia care este cinstită în toată Asia şi în toată lumea este nimicită.” 28 Cuvintele acestea i-au umplut de mânie şi au început să strige: „Mare este Diana efesenilor!” 29 Toată cetatea s-a tulburat. Au năvălit cu toţii într-un gând în teatru şi au luat cu ei pe macedonenii Gaius(AC) şi Aristarh(AD), tovarăşii de călătorie ai lui Pavel. 30 Pavel voia să vină înaintea norodului, dar nu l-au lăsat ucenicii. 31 Chiar şi unii din mai-marii Asiei, care-i erau prieteni, au trimis la el să-l roage să nu se ducă la teatru. 32 Unii strigau una, alţii alta, căci adunarea era în învălmăşeală şi cei mai mulţi nici nu ştiau pentru ce se adunaseră. 33 Atunci, au scos din norod pe Alexandru, pe care iudeii îl împingeau înainte. Alexandru(AE) a făcut(AF) semn cu mâna şi voia să se apere înaintea norodului. 34 Dar când l-au cunoscut că este iudeu, au strigat toţi într-un glas, timp de aproape două ceasuri: „Mare este Diana efesenilor!” 35 Totuşi logofătul a potolit norodul şi a zis: „Bărbaţi efeseni, cine este acela care nu ştie că cetatea efesenilor este păzitoarea templului marii Diane şi a chipului ei căzut din cer? 36 Fiindcă nimeni nu poate să tăgăduiască lucrul acesta, trebuie să vă potoliţi şi să nu faceţi nimic cu pornire nechibzuită. 37 Căci aţi adus aici pe oamenii aceştia, care nu sunt vinovaţi nici de jefuirea templului, nici de hulă împotriva zeiţei noastre. 38 Deci, dacă în adevăr, Dimitrie şi meşterii lui au să se plângă împotriva cuiva, sunt zile de judecată şi sunt dregători; să se pârască unii pe alţii. 39 Dar, dacă umblaţi după altceva, se va hotărî într-o adunare legiuită. 40 Noi, de fapt, suntem în primejdie să fim învinuiţi de răscoală pentru cele întâmplate astăzi, căci n-avem niciun temei, ca să putem îndreptăţi zarva aceasta.” 41 După aceste cuvinte, a dat drumul adunării.

Paul in Ephesus
19 And it happened that while (A)Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed (B)through the inland[a] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, (C)“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, (D)we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, (E)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into (F)John's baptism.” 4 And Paul said, (G)“John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (H)to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, (I)they were baptized in[b] the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And (J)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and (K)they began speaking in tongues and (L)prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 And (M)he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them (N)about the kingdom of God. 9 (O)But when some became stubborn and (P)continued in unbelief, speaking evil of (Q)the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.[c] 10 This continued for (R)two years, so that (S)all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
The Sons of Sceva
11 And (T)God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (U)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and (V)the evil spirits came out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish (W)exorcists (X)undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, (Y)“I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, (Z)“Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all[d] of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and (AA)the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, (AB)confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord (AC)continued to increase and prevail mightily.
A Riot at Ephesus
21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit (AD)to pass through (AE)Macedonia and Achaia and (AF)go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, (AG)I must also see Rome.” 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of (AH)his helpers, (AI)Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia (AJ)for a while.
23 About that time (AK)there arose no little disturbance concerning (AL)the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, (AM)brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25 (AN)These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, (AO)saying that (AP)gods made with hands are not gods. 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the (AQ)great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, (AR)“Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and (AS)Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's (AT)companions in travel. 30 But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. 31 And even some of the Asiarchs,[e] who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. 32 (AU)Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, (AV)motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd. 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, (AW)“Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from (AX)the sky?[f] 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought (AY)these men here who are neither (AZ)sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are (BA)proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you seek anything further,[g] it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40 For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” 41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused: and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
