² Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and ^(A)Zerubbabel the son of ^(B)Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, ^(C)as it is written in the Law of Moses the ^(D)man of God.

^2 (A)Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and ^(B)Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were ^(C)with them, supporting them.

The Command to Rebuild the Temple

1 ^(A)In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to ^(B)Zerubbabel the son of ^(C)Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to ^(D)Joshua the son of ^(E)Jehozadak, the high priest:

The People Obey the Lord

^12 (A)Then ^(B)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and ^(C)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all ^(D)the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.

¹⁴ And ^(A)the Lord stirred up the spirit of ^(B)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of ^(C)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all ^(D)the remnant of the people. And they came and ^(E)worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

² “Speak now to ^(A)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to ^(B)Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say,

²³ On that day, declares the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O ^(A)Zerubbabel ^(B)my servant, the son of ^(C)Shealtiel, declares the Lord, and make you ^(D)like a^[a] signet ring, ^(E)for I have chosen you, declares the Lord of hosts.”

¹² And after the deportation to Babylon: ^(A)Jechoniah was the father of ^(B)Shealtiel,^[a] and ^(C)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

²⁷ the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, ^(A)the son of Zerubbabel, the son ^(B)of Shealtiel,^[a] the son of Neri,
