²¹ No priest shall drink wine when he enters the inner court.^(A)

⁹ “Drink no wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons, when you enter the tent of meeting, that you may not die; it is a statute forever throughout your generations.^(A)

⁷ For a bishop,^[a] as God’s steward, must be blameless; he must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or addicted to wine or violent or greedy for gain,^{(A) 8} but he must be hospitable,^[b] a lover of goodness, self-controlled, upright, devout, and restrained,

²³ No longer drink only water, but take a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

Qualifications of Deacons

⁸ Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money;^(A)

¹⁵ for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit.^(A)
