Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nations

Judah Summoned to Repent

2 Gather together,^(A) gather yourselves together,
    you shameful^(B) nation,
²before the decree takes effect
    and that day passes like windblown chaff,^(C)
before the Lord’s fierce anger^(D)
    comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord’s wrath^(E)
    comes upon you.
³Seek^(F) the Lord, all you humble of the land,
    you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness,^(G) seek humility;^(H)
    perhaps you will be sheltered^(I)
    on the day of the Lord’s anger.

Philistia

⁴Gaza^(J) will be abandoned
    and Ashkelon^(K) left in ruins.
At midday Ashdod will be emptied
    and Ekron uprooted.
⁵Woe to you who live by the sea,
    you Kerethite^(L) people;
the word of the Lord is against you,^(M)
    Canaan, land of the Philistines.
He says, “I will destroy you,
    and none will be left.”^(N)
⁶The land by the sea will become pastures
    having wells for shepherds

    there they will find pasture.
In the evening they will lie down

Moab and Ammon

⁸“I have heard the insults^(R) of Moab^(S)
    and the taunts of the Ammonites,^(T)
who insulted^(U) my people
    and made threats against their land.^(V)
⁹Therefore, as surely as I live,”
    declares the Lord Almighty,
    the God of Israel,
“surely Moab^(W) will become like Sodom,^(X)
    the Ammonites^(Y) like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
    a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder^(Z) them;
    the survivors^(AA) of my nation will inherit their land.^(AB)”

¹⁰This is what they will get in return for their pride,^(AC)
    for insulting^(AD) and mocking
    the people of the Lord Almighty.^(AE)
¹¹The Lord will be awesome^(AF) to them

Distant nations will bow down to him,^(AI)
    all of them in their own lands.

Cush

¹²“You Cushites,^[b]^(AJ) too,
will be slain by my sword.^(AK)”

Assyria

¹³He will stretch out his hand against the north
    and destroy Assyria,^(AL)
leaving Nineveh^(AM) utterly desolate
    and dry as the desert.^(AN)
¹⁴Flocks and herds^(AO) will lie down there,
    creatures of every kind.
The desert owl^(AP) and the screech owl^(AQ)
    will roost on her columns.
Their hooting will echo through the windows,
    rubble will fill the doorways,
    the beams of cedar will be exposed.
¹⁵This is the city of revelry^(AR)
    that lived in safety.^(AS)
She said to herself,
    “I am the one! And there is none besides me.”^(AT)
What a ruin she has become,

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

³This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Damascus,^(K)
    even for four, I will not relent.^(L)
Because she threshed Gilead
    with sledges having iron teeth,
⁴I will send fire^(M) on the house of Hazael^(N)
    that will consume the fortresses^(O) of Ben-Hadad.^(P)
⁵I will break down the gate^(Q) of Damascus;
    I will destroy the king who is in^[b] the Valley of Aven^[c]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.^(R)
    The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,^(S)”

    even for four, I will not relent.^(V)
Because she took captive whole communities
    and sold them to Edom,^(W)
⁷I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
    that will consume her fortresses.

    and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand^(Y) against Ekron,
    till the last of the Philistines^(Z) are dead,”^(AA)

“For three sins of Tyre,^(AC)
    even for four, I will not relent.^(AD)
Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
    disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,^(AE)
¹⁰I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
    that will consume her fortresses.^(AF)”

¹¹This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Edom,^(AG)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword^(AH)
    and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
    and his fury flamed unchecked,^(AI)
¹²I will send fire on Teman^(AJ)
    that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.^(AK)”

¹³This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Ammon,^(AL)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women^(AM) of Gilead
    in order to extend his borders,
¹⁴I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah^(AN)

amid war cries^(AP) on the day of battle,
    amid violent winds^(AQ) on a stormy day.

A Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“Son of man, set your face against^(A) the Ammonites^(B) and prophesy against them.^(C) ³Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you said “Aha!^(D)” over my sanctuary when it was desecrated^(E) and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and over the people of Judah when they went into exile,^(F) ⁴therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East^(G) as a possession. They will set up their camps^(H) and pitch their tents among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk.^(I) ⁵I will turn Rabbah^(J) into a pasture for camels and Ammon into a resting place for sheep.^(K) Then you will know that I am the Lord. ⁶For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands^(L) and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,^(M) ⁷therefore I will stretch out my hand^(N) against you and give you as plunder^(O) to the nations. A Prophecy Against Moab

⁸“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Moab^(R) and Seir^(S) said, “Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,” ⁹therefore I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning at its frontier towns—Beth Jeshimoth^(T), Baal Meon^(U) and Kiriathaim^(V)—the glory of that land. ¹⁰I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the East as a possession, so that the Ammonites will not be remembered^(W) among the nations; ¹¹and I will inflict punishment on Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”^(X)

A Prophecy Against Edom

¹²“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom^(Y) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, ¹³therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand^(Z) against Edom and kill both man and beast.^(AA) I will lay it waste, and from Teman^(AB) to Dedan^(AC) they will fall by the sword.^(AD) ¹⁴I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger^(AE) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”^(AF)

A Prophecy Against Philistia

¹⁵“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because the Philistines^(AG) acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice^(AH) in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, ¹⁶therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines,^(AI) and I will wipe out the Kerethites^(AJ) and destroy those remaining along the coast.^(AK) ¹⁷I will carry out great vengeance^(AL) on them and punish^(AM) them in my wrath. “See how the waters are rising in the north;^(C)
    they will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
    the towns and those who live in them.
The people will cry out;
    all who dwell in the land will wail^(D)
³at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds,
    at the noise of enemy chariots^(E)
    and the rumble of their wheels.
Parents will not turn to help their children;
    their hands will hang limp.^(F)
⁴For the day has come
    to destroy all the Philistines
and to remove all survivors
    who could help Tyre^(G) and Sidon.^(H)
The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,^(I)
    the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.^[a]^(J)
⁵Gaza will shave^(K) her head in mourning;
    Ashkelon^(L) will be silenced.
You remnant on the plain,

²⁷“Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk^(AK) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword^(AL) I will send among you.’ ²⁸But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink^(AM), tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! ²⁹See, I am beginning to bring disaster^(AN) on the city that bears my Name,^(AO) and will you indeed go unpunished?^(AP) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword^(AQ) on all^(AR) who live on the earth,^(AS) declares the Lord Almighty.’
