(A)behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (B)my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, (C)and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. 10 Moreover, (D)I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (E)the grinding of the millstones and (F)the light of the lamp. 11 (G)This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and (H)these nations shall serve the king of Babylon (I)seventy years. 12 Then after (J)seventy years are completed, (K)I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, (L)the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, (M)making the land an everlasting waste. 13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written (N)in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.

Judgment on the Whole Earth

24 Behold, (A)the Lord will empty the earth[a] and make it desolate,
    and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
(B)And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;
    as with the slave, so with his master;
    as with the maid, so with her mistress;
(C)as with the buyer, so with the seller;
    as with the lender, so with the borrower;
    (D)as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
(E)The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered;
    (F)for the Lord has spoken this word.

(G)The earth mourns and withers;
    the world languishes and withers;
    the highest people of the earth languish.
The earth lies (H)defiled
    under its inhabitants;
for (I)they have transgressed the laws,
    violated the statutes,
    broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore (J)a curse devours the earth,
    and its inhabitants (K)suffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
    and few men are left.
(L)The wine mourns,
    the vine languishes,
    all the merry-hearted sigh.
(M)The mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
    the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
    the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
No more do they drink wine (N)with singing;
    strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 (O)The wasted city is broken down;
    (P)every house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 (Q)There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
    (R)all joy has grown dark;
    the gladness of the earth is banished.
12 Desolation is left in the city;
    the gates are battered into ruins.

Jerusalem Captured and Burned

17 (A)Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged. He gave them all into his hand. 18 (B)And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. 19 (C)And they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem and burned all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its precious vessels. 20 He (D)took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, (E)and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, 21 to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had (F)enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate (G)it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.
