¹⁵ “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Because of it I clothed Lebanon with gloom, and all the trees of the field withered away.^(A)

¹⁸ When they see the smoke of her burning,^(A) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city^(B)?’^{(C) 19} They will throw dust on their heads,^(D) and with weeping and mourning^(E) cry out:

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

⁹ “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her^(A) and shared her luxury^(B) see the smoke of her burning,^(C) they will weep and mourn over her.^{(D) 10} Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off^(E) and cry:

¹¹ “The merchants^(H) of the earth will weep and mourn^(I) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore^(J)—

⁴ and the offerings^(A) of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.^(B)
