Aäron maakt een gouden kalf

32 Toen het volk zag dat Mozes maar niet van de berg terugkwam, gingen ze naar Aäron. Ze zeiden tegen hem: "Kom, maak goden voor ons die ons kunnen leiden. Want we weten niet wat er is gebeurd met die Mozes, die man die ons uit Egypte heeft gehaald." 2 Aäron antwoordde: "Geef mij de gouden oorringen van jullie vrouwen, zonen en dochters." 3 Toen haalden ze allemaal hun gouden ringen uit hun oren en gaven die aan Aäron. 4 Hij smolt ze en maakte er een gouden beeld van in de vorm van een kalf. Toen riepen ze: "Kijk, Israël, dit is jullie god! Dit is de god die jullie uit Egypte heeft gehaald!" 5 Toen bouwde Aäron een altaar voor het beeld en riep: "Morgen vieren we feest voor de Heer!" 6 De volgende ochtend vroeg offerden ze brand-offers. Daarna gingen ze eten en drinken en feestvieren. Het werd een wild feest.

7 Toen zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Ga naar beneden, want je volk dat jij uit Egypte hebt gehaald, heeft alles bedorven. 8 Ze zijn Mij nu al ongehoorzaam. Ze hebben een gouden kalf gemaakt dat hun god moet zijn. Ze hebben het aanbeden en ze hebben er offers aan gebracht. Ze hebben gezegd: 'Israël, dit is jullie god die jullie uit Egypte heeft gehaald.' "

9 Verder zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Ik heb gezien hoe koppig en ongehoorzaam dit volk is. 10 Laat Mij mijn gang gaan, dan zal Ik hen vernietigen. Ik ben vreselijk boos op hen. Dan zal Ik van jóu een groot volk maken." 11 Toen smeekte Mozes zijn Heer God: "Heer, U heeft uw volk met grote wonderen uit Egypte gered. U heeft toen laten zien hoe machtig U bent. Dan kunt U het nu toch niet zó zwaar straffen? 12 Als U dat doet, zullen de Egyptenaren zeggen: 'Hij heeft hen meegenomen om hen te vernietigen, hen in de bergen te doden, hen van de aardbodem weg te vegen.' U bent wel heel boos op hen, maar straf hen alstublieft niet! Doe alstublieft niet de vreselijke dingen die U zei. 13 Denk alstublieft aan Abraham, Izaäk en Israël, uw dienaren. Want U heeft hun bij Uzelf gezworen: 'Ik zal je familie ná jou zo ontelbaar maken als de sterren aan de hemel. En dit hele land waar Ik over heb gesproken, zal Ik aan jouw familie ná jou geven. Het zal voor altijd hun eigendom zijn.' " 14 Toen veranderde de Heer zijn plannen en besloot zijn volk niet zo erg te straffen als Hij eerst van plan was geweest.

15 Mozes ging met Jozua de berg af. De twee platte stenen van Gods verbond had hij in zijn hand. Die twee stenen waren aan beide kanten volgeschreven. 16 Ze waren door God Zelf gemaakt en wat er op geschreven stond, had Hij er Zelf op geschreven.

17 Jozua hoorde het gejuich van het volk. Hij zei tegen Mozes: "Er is krijgsgeschreeuw in het kamp!" 18 Maar Mozes zei: "Nee, het is niet het gejuich van een overwinning. Ook niet het geschreeuw van een nederlaag. Het is het gejuich van een feest!" 19 Toen hij bij het tentenkamp kwam, zag hij het kalf. En hij zag hoe de mensen ervoor aan het dansen waren. Mozes werd woedend. Hij gooide de platte stenen die hij in zijn handen had onderaan de berg kapot. 20 Toen pakte hij het kalf dat ze hadden gemaakt en verbrandde het. De resten maalde hij fijn, totdat er alleen nog poeder van over was. Dat stof strooide hij op het water en gaf het aan de Israëlieten te drinken.

21 Toen zei Mozes tegen Aäron: "Hoe heb je het volk zoiets verschrikkelijks kunnen aandoen?" 22 Maar Aäron zei: "Word alstublieft niet boos, heer. U weet zelf dat dit volk altijd slechte dingen wil doen. 23 Ze zeiden tegen mij: 'Maak goden voor ons die ons kunnen leiden. Want we weten niet wat er gebeurd is met die Mozes, die man die ons uit Egypte heeft gehaald.' 24 Toen zei ik tegen hen: 'Als je gouden sieraden hebt, breng ze dan hier!' Ze gaven hun goud aan mij en toen ik het goud in het vuur gooide, kwam dit kalf er uit."

Het volk wordt gestraft

25 Mozes zag dat de mensen naakt ronddansten. (Want Aäron had hen helemaal vrij gelaten om te doen waar ze zin in hadden. Zo stonden ze vreselijk voor schut voor hun vijanden.) 26 Hij ging bij de ingang van het tentenkamp staan en zei: "Wie voor de Heer is, moet bij mij komen!" Toen kwamen de mannen uit de stam van Levi naar hem toe. 27 Hij zei tegen hen: "Dit zegt de Heer, de God van Israël: doe je zwaard om en ga dwars door het tentenkamp, van poort tot poort. Dood iedereen die je ziet, al is het je broer, een familielid of je buurman." 28 Ze deden wat Mozes had gezegd. Zo werden er op die dag ongeveer 3000 mannen gedood. 29 Toen zei Mozes: "Vandaag is te zien of jullie werkelijk de Heer willen dienen. Want je zal zelfs je zoon of je broer moeten doden. De Heer zal jullie hiervoor belonen."

30 De volgende dag zei Mozes tegen het volk: "Jullie hebben iets verschrikkelijks gedaan tegen God. Ik zal nu de berg op klimmen, naar de Heer. Als ik het God vraag, zal Hij jullie misschien willen vergeven." 31 Toen klom Mozes naar de Heer terug en zei: "Heer, dit volk heeft iets heel verschrikkelijks gedaan. Want ze hebben een god van goud voor zich gemaakt. 32 Maar vergeef het hun alstublieft. En als U dat niet wil doen, haal míjn naam dan maar weg uit het Boek van het leven waarin U onze namen heeft geschreven, in plaats van hún naam." 33 Maar de Heer zei tegen Mozes: "Alleen mensen die ongehoorzaam aan Mij zijn geweest, haal Ik weg uit mijn Boek. 34 Maar ga nu op weg en breng dit volk naar het land waar Ik het over gehad heb. Mijn engel zal voor jullie uit gaan. Maar op een dag zullen ze de gevolgen dragen voor hun ongehoorzaamheid."

35 Zo strafte de Heer het volk, omdat het tegen Aäron had gezegd dat hij een kalf voor hen moest maken.

The Gold Bull-Calf(A)

32 (B)When the people saw that Moses had not come down from the mountain but was staying there a long time, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “We do not know what has happened to this man Moses, who led us out of Egypt; so make us a god[a] to lead us.”

2 Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold earrings which your wives, your sons, and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their gold earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 (C)He took the earrings, melted them, poured the gold into a mold, and made a gold bull-calf.

The people said, “Israel, this is our god, who led us out of Egypt!”

5 Then Aaron built an altar in front of the gold bull-calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to honor the Lord.” 6 (D)Early the next morning they brought some animals to burn as sacrifices and others to eat as fellowship offerings. The people sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy of drinking and sex.

7 The Lord said to Moses, “Hurry and go back down, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have sinned and rejected me. 8 They have already left the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made a bull-calf out of melted gold and have worshiped it and offered sacrifices to it. They are saying that this is their god, who led them out of Egypt. 9 I know how stubborn these people are. 10 Now, don't try to stop me. I am angry with them, and I am going to destroy them. Then I will make you and your descendants into a great nation.”

11 (E)But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God and said, “Lord, why should you be so angry with your people, whom you rescued from Egypt with great might and power? 12 Why should the Egyptians be able to say that you led your people out of Egypt, planning to kill them in the mountains and destroy them completely? Stop being angry; change your mind and do not bring this disaster on your people. 13 (F)Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember the solemn promise you made to them to give them as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and to give their descendants all that land you promised would be their possession forever.” 14 So the Lord changed his mind and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

15 Moses went back down the mountain, carrying the two stone tablets with the commandments written on both sides. 16 God himself had made the tablets and had engraved the commandments on them.

17 Joshua heard the people shouting and said to Moses, “I hear the sound of battle in the camp.”

18 Moses said, “That doesn't sound like a shout of victory or a cry of defeat; it's the sound of singing.”

19 When Moses came close enough to the camp to see the bull-calf and to see the people dancing, he became furious. There at the foot of the mountain, he threw down the tablets he was carrying and broke them. 20 He took the bull-calf which they had made, melted it, ground it into fine powder, and mixed it with water. Then he made the people of Israel drink it. 21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have made them commit such a terrible sin?”

22 Aaron answered, “Don't be angry with me; you know how determined these people are to do evil. 23 They said to me, ‘We don't know what has happened to this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt; so make us a god to lead us.’ 24 I asked them to bring me their gold ornaments, and those who had any took them off and gave them to me. I threw the ornaments into the fire and out came this bull-calf!”

25 Moses saw that Aaron had let the people get out of control and make fools of themselves in front of their enemies. 26 So he stood at the gate of the camp and shouted, “Everyone who is on the Lord's side come over here!” So all the Levites gathered around him, 27 and he said to them, “The Lord God of Israel commands every one of you to put on your sword and go through the camp from this gate to the other and kill your brothers, your friends, and your neighbors.” 28 The Levites obeyed, and killed about three thousand men that day. 29 Moses said to the Levites, “Today you have consecrated yourselves[b] as priests in the service of the Lord by killing your sons and brothers, so the Lord has given you his blessing.”

30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a terrible sin. But now I will again go up the mountain to the Lord; perhaps I can obtain forgiveness for your sin.” 31 Moses then returned to the Lord and said, “These people have committed a terrible sin. They have made a god out of gold and worshiped it. 32 (G)Please forgive their sin; but if you won't, then remove my name from the book in which you have written the names of your people.”

33 The Lord answered, “It is those who have sinned against me whose names I will remove from my book. 34 Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about. Remember that my angel will guide you, but the time is coming when I will punish these people for their sin.”

35 So the Lord sent a disease on the people, because they had caused Aaron to make the gold bull-calf.

32 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the Lord.

6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

35 And the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

The Golden Calf

32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain,(A) they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before(B) us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”(C)

2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings(D) that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol(E) cast in the shape of a calf,(F) fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b](G) Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(H)

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival(I) to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.(J) Afterward they sat down to eat and drink(K) and got up to indulge in revelry.(L)

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt,(M) have become corrupt.(N) 8 They have been quick to turn away(O) from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol(P) cast in the shape of a calf.(Q) They have bowed down to it and sacrificed(R) to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’(S)

9 “I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked(T) people. 10 Now leave me alone(U) so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy(V) them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(W)

11 But Moses sought the favor(X) of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?(Y) 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’?(Z) Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster(AA) on your people. 13 Remember(AB) your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self:(AC) ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars(AD) in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land(AE) I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented(AF) and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

15 Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law(AG) in his hands.(AH) They were inscribed(AI) on both sides, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.(AJ)

17 When Joshua(AK) heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.”

18 Moses replied:

“It is not the sound of victory,
    it is not the sound of defeat;
    it is the sound of singing that I hear.”

19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf(AL) and the dancing,(AM) his anger burned(AN) and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces(AO) at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf the people had made and burned(AP) it in the fire; then he ground it to powder,(AQ) scattered it on the water(AR) and made the Israelites drink it.

21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?”

22 “Do not be angry,(AS) my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil.(AT) 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’(AU) 24 So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”(AV)

25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock(AW) to their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.

27 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’”(AX) 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”

30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin.(AY) But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement(AZ) for your sin.”

31 So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!(BA) They have made themselves gods of gold.(BB) 32 But now, please forgive their sin(BC)—but if not, then blot me(BD) out of the book(BE) you have written.”

33 The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out(BF) of my book. 34 Now go, lead(BG) the people to the place(BH) I spoke of, and my angel(BI) will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish,(BJ) I will punish them for their sin.”

35 And the Lord struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf(BK) Aaron had made.
