³⁰ Put the bread of the Presence^(A) on this table to be before me at all times.

¹⁰ Ahimelek inquired^(A) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions^(B) and the sword^(C) of Goliath the Philistine.”

³ He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?^{(A) 4} He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.^(B)

²⁵ He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? ²⁶ In the days of Abiathar the high priest,^(A) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.^(B) And he also gave some to his companions.”^(C)

²⁷ Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,^(D) not man for the Sabbath.^{(E) 28} So the Son of Man^(F) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath^(A)

6 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.^{(B) 2} Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”^(C)

³ Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?^{(D) 4} He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.^(E) And he also gave some to his companions.” ⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man^(F) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
