²¹ The Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud^(A) to lead them on their way during the day and in a pillar of fire to give them light at night, so that they could travel day or night.

¹⁸ Moses entered the cloud as he went up the mountain, and he remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.^(A)

⁹ When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant^(A) the Lord made with you, I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. I did not eat food or drink water.
