20 And they set out from Succoth, and they encamped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 And Yahweh was going before them by day in a column of cloud to lead them on the way and by night in a column of fire to give light to them to go by day and night. 22 The column of cloud by day and the column of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

20 After leaving Sukkoth(A) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(B) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(C) of them in a pillar of cloud(D) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(E) its place in front of the people.
