Moise şi Aaron, înaintea lui Faraon
5 Moise şi Aaron s-au dus apoi la Faraon şi i-au zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Lasă pe poporul Meu să plece, ca să prăznuiască(A) în pustie un praznic în cinstea Mea’.” 2 Faraon a răspuns: „Cine(B) este Domnul, ca să ascult de glasul Lui şi să las pe Israel să plece? Eu nu cunosc pe Domnul şi nu voi(C) lăsa pe Israel să plece.” 3 Ei au zis: „Ni S-a arătat Dumnezeul evreilor. Dă-ne voie să facem un drum de trei zile în pustie, ca să aducem jertfe Domnului, pentru ca să nu ne bată cu ciumă sau cu sabie.” 4 Şi împăratul Egiptului le-a zis: „Moise şi Aaron, pentru ce abateţi poporul de la lucrul lui? Plecaţi la lucrările(D) voastre.”
Mărirea muncilor
5 Faraon a zis: „Iată că poporul acesta s-a(E) înmulţit acum în ţară, şi voi mai voiţi să-l faceţi să-şi înceteze lucrările?” 6 Şi chiar în ziua aceea, Faraon a dat următoarea poruncă isprăvniceilor(F) norodului şi logofeţilor: 7 „Să nu mai daţi poporului paie ca mai înainte pentru facerea cărămizilor, ci să se ducă singuri să strângă paie. 8 Totuşi să le cereţi acelaşi număr de cărămizi pe care le făceau mai înainte; să nu le scădeţi nimic din ele, căci sunt nişte leneşi, de aceea strigă mereu: ‘Haidem să aducem jertfe Dumnezeului nostru!’ 9 Să se dea mult de lucru oamenilor acestora, ca să aibă de lucru şi să nu mai umble după năluci.” 10 Isprăvniceii poporului şi logofeţii au venit şi au spus poporului: „Aşa vorbeşte Faraon: ‘Nu vă mai dau paie; 11 duceţi-vă singuri de vă luaţi paie de unde veţi găsi, dar nu vi se scade nimic din lucrul vostru’.” 12 Poporul s-a răspândit în toată ţara Egiptului, ca să strângă mirişte în loc de paie. 13 Isprăvniceii îi sileau zicând: „Isprăviţi-vă lucrul zi de zi, ca atunci când erau paie!” 14 Au bătut chiar pe logofeţii copiilor lui Israel, puşi peste ei de isprăvniceii lui Faraon. „Pentru ce”, li se zicea, „n-aţi isprăvit ieri şi azi, ca mai înainte, numărul de cărămizi care vă fusese hotărât?” 15 Logofeţii copiilor lui Israel s-au dus să se plângă la Faraon şi i-au zis: „Pentru ce te porţi aşa cu robii tăi? 16 Robilor tăi nu li se mai dau paie ca mai înainte, şi totuşi ni se spune: ‘Faceţi cărămizi!’ Ba încă, robii tăi sunt şi bătuţi, ca şi când poporul tău ar fi vinovat.” 17 Faraon a răspuns: „Sunteţi nişte leneşi şi nişte trântori! De aceea ziceţi: ‘Haidem să aducem jertfe Domnului!’ 18 Acum, duceţi-vă îndată de lucraţi; nu vi se vor da paie şi veţi face acelaşi număr de cărămizi.”
Cârtirea israeliţilor
19 Logofeţii copiilor lui Israel au văzut în ce stare nenorocită erau când li se zicea: „Nu vi se scade nimic din numărul de cărămizi, ci în fiecare zi să faceţi lucrul cuvenit unei zile.” 20 Când au ieşit de la Faraon, au întâlnit pe Moise şi pe Aaron, care îi aşteptau. 21 Şi(G) le-au zis: „Să vă vadă Domnul şi să judece! Voi ne-aţi făcut urâţi lui Faraon şi slujitorilor lui; ba încă le-aţi dat sabia în mână ca să ne omoare.” 22 Moise s-a întors la Domnul şi a zis: „Doamne, pentru ce ai făcut un astfel de rău poporului acestuia? Pentru ce m-ai trimis? 23 De când m-am dus la Faraon ca să-i vorbesc în Numele Tău, el face şi mai rău poporului acestuia, şi n-ai izbăvit pe poporul Tău.”

First Encounter with Pharaoh
5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may [a]hold (A)a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ”
2 And Pharaoh said, (B)“Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, (C)nor will I let Israel go.”
3 So they said, (D)“The God of the Hebrews has (E)met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with (F)pestilence or with the sword.”
4 Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your (G)labor.” 5 And Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are (H)many now, and you make them rest from their labor!”
6 So the same day Pharaoh commanded the (I)taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying, 7 “You shall no longer give the people straw to make (J)brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words.”
10 And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh: ‘I will not give you straw. 11 Go, get yourselves straw where you can find it; yet none of your work will be reduced.’ ” 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters forced them to hurry, saying, “Fulfill your work, your daily quota, as when there was straw.” 14 Also the (K)officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were (L)beaten and were asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as before?”
15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why are you dealing thus with your servants? 16 There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, ‘Make brick!’ And indeed your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people.”
17 But he said, “You are idle! Idle! Therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Therefore go now and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks.” 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, “You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota.”
20 Then, as they came out from Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there to meet them. 21 (M)And they said to them, “Let the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made [b]us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
Israel’s Deliverance Assured(N)
22 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all.”

Bricks Without Straw
5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go,(A) so that they may hold a festival(B) to me in the wilderness.’”
2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord,(C) that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”(D)
3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey(E) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues(F) or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor?(G) Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous,(H) and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers(I) and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks;(J) let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota.(K) They are lazy;(L) that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’(M) 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10 Then the slave drivers(N) and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced(O) at all.’” 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed,(P) demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
15 Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
17 Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy!(Q) That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Now get to work.(R) You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”
19 The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21 and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge(S) you! You have made us obnoxious(T) to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword(U) in their hand to kill us.”(V)
God Promises Deliverance
22 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people?(W) Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued(X) your people at all.”
