Refidim – Stânca din Horeb
17 Toată(A) adunarea copiilor lui Israel a plecat din pustia Sin, după călătoriile zilnice pe care poruncise Domnul să le facă, şi au tăbărât la Refidim. Acolo poporul n-a găsit apă de băut. 2 Atunci, poporul(B) a căutat ceartă cu Moise. Ei au zis: „Dă-ne apă să bem!” Moise le-a răspuns: „Pentru ce căutaţi ceartă cu mine? Pentru ce ispitiţi(C) pe Domnul?” 3 Poporul stătea acolo, chinuit de sete, şi cârtea(D) împotriva lui Moise. El zicea: „Pentru ce ne-ai scos din Egipt, ca să ne faci să murim de sete aici, cu copiii şi turmele noastre?” 4 Moise a strigat(E) către Domnul şi a zis: „Ce să fac cu poporul acesta? Încă puţin, şi au să mă(F) ucidă cu pietre.” 5 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Treci(G) înaintea poporului şi ia cu tine vreo câţiva din bătrânii lui Israel; ia-ţi în mână şi toiagul cu care ai(H) lovit râul şi porneşte! 6 Iată(I), Eu voi sta înaintea ta pe stânca Horebului; vei lovi stânca şi va ţâşni apă din ea, şi poporul va bea.” Moise a făcut aşa în faţa bătrânilor lui Israel. 7 El a numit locul acela Masa(J) şi Meriba (Ispită şi ceartă), căci copiii lui Israel se certaseră şi ispitiseră pe Domnul, zicând: „Este oare Domnul în mijlocul nostru sau nu este?”
Înfrângerea lui Amalec
8 Amalec(K) a venit să bată pe Israel la Refidim. 9 Atunci, Moise a zis lui(L) Iosua: „Alege nişte bărbaţi şi ieşi de luptă împotriva lui Amalec. Iar eu voi sta mâine pe vârful dealului cu toiagul lui Dumnezeu în mână.” 10 Iosua a făcut ce-i spusese Moise şi a ieşit să lupte împotriva lui Amalec. Iar Moise, Aaron şi Hur s-au suit pe vârful dealului. 11 Când îşi ridica(M) Moise mâna, era mai tare Israel şi când îşi lăsa mâna în jos, era mai tare Amalec. 12 Mâinile lui Moise fiind trudite, ei au luat o piatră, au pus-o sub el, şi el a şezut pe ea. Aaron şi Hur îi sprijineau mâinile, unul de o parte, iar altul de alta, şi mâinile lui au rămas întinse până la asfinţitul soarelui. 13 Şi Iosua a biruit pe Amalec şi poporul lui cu tăişul sabiei. 14 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Scrie(N) lucrul acesta în carte, ca să se păstreze aducerea-aminte, şi spune lui Iosua că voi(O) şterge pomenirea lui Amalec de sub ceruri.” 15 Moise a zidit un altar şi i-a pus numele „Domnul, steagul meu”[a]. 16 El a zis: „Pentru că şi-a ridicat mâna împotriva scaunului de domnie al Domnului, Domnul va purta război împotriva lui Amalec, din neam în neam!”

Water from the Rock(A)
17 Then (B)all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of (C)Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to (D)drink. 2 (E)Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.”
So Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you (F)tempt the Lord?”
3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people (G)complained against Moses, and said, “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our (H)livestock with thirst?”
4 So Moses (I)cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to (J)stone[a] me!”
5 And the Lord said to Moses, (K)“Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which (L)you struck the river, and go. 6 (M)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 So he called the name of the place (N)Massah[b] and [c]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they [d]tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Victory over the Amalekites(O)
8 (P)Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (Q)the rod of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses (R)held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands became [e]heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, (S)“Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that (T)I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, [f]The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; 16 for he said, “Because [g]the Lord has (U)sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

17 (A)All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 (B)Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you (C)test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water, and (D)the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready (E)to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with (F)which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 (G)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place (H)Massah[a] and (I)Meribah,[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Israel Defeats Amalek
8 (J)Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to (K)Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (L)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So (M)Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and (N)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 Whenever Moses (O)held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and (P)Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And (Q)Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of (R)Joshua, that (S)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses (T)built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, 16 saying, “A hand upon the throne[c] of the Lord! (U)The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
