⁶ That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers^(A) and overseers in charge of the people:

¹⁹ The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.”

¹⁰ Then the slave drivers^(A) and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw.

¹³ The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” ¹⁴ And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed,^(A) demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”

¹⁵ Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way?

¹¹ So they put slave masters^(A) over them to oppress them with forced labor,^(B) and they built Pithom and Rameses^(C) as store cities^(D) for Pharaoh.

¹¹ Uzziah had a well-trained army, ready to go out by divisions according to their numbers as mustered by Jeiel the secretary and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officials.

⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.^(A) I assigned the hill country of Seir^(B) to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.^(C)

The Covenant Renewed at Shechem

24 Then Joshua assembled^(A) all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.^(B) He summoned^(C) the elders,^(D) leaders, judges and officials of Israel,^(E) and they presented themselves before God.

³³ All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical^(A) priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born^(B) were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal,^(C) as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel.
